A workflow is developed in which a rock physics model is built and calibrated to well data in the Haynesville Shale and then applied to 3D seismic inversion data to predict porosity and mineralogy away from the borehole locations. The rock physics model describes the relationship between porosity, mineral composition, pore shape, and elastic stiffness using the anisotropic differential effective medium model. The calibrated rock physics model is used to generate a modeling space representing a range of mineral compositions and porosities with a calibrated mean pore shape. The model space is grid searched using objective functions to select a range of models that describe the inverted P-impedance, S-impedance, and density volumes. The selected models provide a range of possible rock properties (porosity and mineral composition) and an estimate of uncertainty. The mineral properties were mapped in three dimensions within the area of interest using this modeling technique and inversion workflow. This map of mineral content and porosity can be interpreted to predict the best areas for hydraulic fracturing.

Dynamic geomechanical formation properties from acoustic measurements offer a continuous and non-destructive means to provide a characteristic description of the reservoir formation. In the absence of reliable acoustic measurements of the formation, such as sonic logs, the estimation of the dynamic geomechanical properties becomes challenging. Several techniques like empirical, analytical and intelligent systems have been used to approximate the property estimates. These techniques can also be used to approximate acoustic measurements thus enable dynamic estimation of geomechanical properties. This study intends to explore methodologies and models to dynamically estimate geomechanical properties in the absence of some or all acoustic measurements of the formation. The present work focused on developing empirical and intelligent systems like artificial neural networks (ANN), Gaussian processes (GP), and recurrent neural networks (RNN) to determine the dynamic geomechanical properties. The developed models serve as a cost-effective, reliable, efficient, and robust methods, offering dyanmic geomechanical analysis of the formation. This thesis has five main contributions: (a) a new data-driven empirical model of estimating static Young's modulus from dynamic Young's modulus, (b) a new data-driven ANN model for sonic well log prediction, (c) a new data-driven GP model for shear wave transit time prediction, (d) a new dynamic data-driven RNN model for sonic well log reproduction, and (e) an assessment on the ANN as a reliable sonic logging tool.

Book excerpt: The quantitative estimation of reservoir properties directly from seismic data is a major goal of reservoir characterization. Integrated reservoir characterization makes use of different varieties of well and seismic data to construct detailed spatial estimates of petrophysical and fluid reservoir properties. The advantage of data integration is the generation of consistent and accurate reservoir models that can be used for reservoir optimization, management and development. This is particularly valuable in mature field settings where hydrocarbons are known to exist but their exact location, pay, lateral variations and other properties are poorly defined. Recent approaches of reservoir characterization make use of individual seismic attributes to estimate inter-well reservoir properties. However, these attributes share a considerable amount of information among them and can lead to spurious correlations. An alternative approach is to evaluate reservoir properties using multiple seismic attributes. This study reports the results of an investigation of the use of multivariate seismic attributes to predict lateral reservoir properties of gross thickness, net thickness, gross effective porosity, net-to-gross ratio and net reservoir porosity thickness product. This approach uses principal component analysis and principal factor analysis to transform eighteen relatively correlated original seismic attributes into a set of mutually orthogonal or independent PC's and PF's which are designated as multivariate seismic attributes. Data from the N-sand interval of Vermilion Block 50 field, Gulf of Mexico, was used in this study. Multivariate analyses produced eighteen PC's and three PF's grid maps. A collocated cokriging geostaistical technique was used to estimate the spatial distribution of reservoir properties of eighteen wells penetrating the N-sand interval. Reservoir property maps generated by using multivariate seismic attributes yield highly accurate predictions of reservoir properties when compared to predictions produced with original individual seismic attributes. To the contrary of the original seismic attribute results, predicted reservoir properties of the multivariate seismic attributes honor the lateral geological heterogeneities imbedded within seismic data and strongly maintain the proposed geological model of the N-sand interval. Results suggest that multivariate seismic attribute technique can be used to predict various reservoir properties and can be applied to a wide variety of geological and geophysical settings.

Generally the main goal of reservoir modeling is to provide 3-dimensional models of the main properties in the reservoir in order to perform fluid flow simulations. These properties generally include rock properties, such as porosity and lithology; fluid properties, such as water and hydrocarbon saturations; and dynamic properties, such as pressure and permeability. None of these properties can be directly measured in the subsurface, therefore reservoir properties must be estimated from other measurements. In petroleum geophysics we generally have two kinds of measured data: well log data and seismic data. Well log data contain high resolution information about elastic and petrophysical properties, but they can only sample few locations of the reservoir. On the other side, seismic data cover the whole reservoir but the resolution is lower than well log data. Electromagnetic data are sometimes acquired in addition to seismic data to improve the reservoir description but the resolution is still limited. In order to obtain suitable models of the reservoir, we have to combine these two sources of information, wells and seismic, and integrate physical relations (rock physics and seismic modeling) with mathematical methodologies (inverse theory and probability and statistics). In particular by using a Bayesian approach to seismic and rock physics inversion we aim to obtain reservoir models of rock and fluid properties and the associated uncertainty. Since the resolution and the quality of seismic data are generally not ideal, uncertainty quantification plays a key role in reservoir modeling. This thesis includes three innovative methodologies for seismic reservoir characterization: the first method is a Bayesian inversion methodology suitable for reservoirs in exploration phases with a limited number of wells, the second method is a Bayesian sampling methodology that can provide multiple reservoir models honoring the given seismic dataset, the third one is a stochastic inversion methodology that provides high-detailed models suitable for reservoirs with a large number of wells. The key innovation in all these methods is the use of new statistical tools to describe the multimodal behavior of rock and properties in the reservoir and the direct integration of the rock physics model. The main principle of these methodologies is then extended to time-lapse studies to invert time-lapse seismic data and improve the reservoir description in terms of changes in rock and dynamic properties. The novelty of this method is the simultaneous inversion of the pre-production base seismic survey and repeated monitor surveys. This dissertation contributes to both deterministic and statistical seismic-based reservoir characterization. Complementary, I investigated velocity-pressure transforms to determine analytical physical models to describe the pressure effect on elastic properties and integrate these models in time-lapse reservoir studies. Finally I also developed a statistical methodology to integrate rock physics models in formation evaluation analysis and log-facies classification. All the proposed probabilistic reservoir-characterization techniques can predict reservoir models with multiple properties (static and dynamic) and the associated uncertainty. Multiple models can then be derived to run multiple scenarios and the corresponding risk analysis. All the methodologies were tested using synthetic data and applied to real case datasets. In the future, these methodologies could be integrated with history matching techniques to develop statistical methodologies for seismic history matching and improve reservoir description and monitoring by simultaneously matching seismic data and production data.

The main objective of this dissertation is to investigate the effects of these two geological uncertainties on reservoir responses. To achieve this goal, we aim to develop and test a reservoir modeling and evaluation workflow that accounts for the mode of deformation of a reservoir and the mode of accommodation of reservoir properties for a given deformation, by utilizing structural attributes and rock physics models. First, we investigate the sources of geological uncertainty in structural deformation and rock accommodation. We employ different combinations of structural geometry and deformation models to represent multiple scenarios for structural deformation. Distributed and localized accommodation styles and their subsets can represent scenarios for rock accommodation. Second, we develop a new geomodeling workflow accounting for the mode of structural deformation and rock accommodation. The new workflow links the forward deformation and restoration of the reservoir structure to the same processes on the rock. An application on a synthetic field demonstrates that realizations and dynamic responses from different scenarios can be distinguished from one another by comparing seismic responses. Next, we propose a new rock physics method, Reconstruction of Equivalent Isotropic Medium (REIM), which allows us to compute the angular variation of seismic responses of arbitrarily oriented fracture inclusions in an anisotropic medium, and to apply our new workflow to unconventional shale resources. Specifically, we apply these tools to an unconventional Marcellus gas field in which structural complexity and sparse data cause substantial difficulties in evaluation. We identify the sources of geological uncertainties and define multiple scenarios based on basin-wide and field-specific observations. By using rock physics models as vehicles to link geological scenarios with reservoir properties, we propagate geological assumptions to reservoir responses. We then select combinations of structural deformation and rock accommodation scenarios by comparing the actual and synthetic seismic responses. The selected scenario and models successfully explain the field-specific anomalies.
