Book excerpt: "The goal of this research was to develop a mechanical property prediction model using machine learning applied at the hot rolling processing stage for microalloyed steel strip produced at the Algoma steel mill located in Ontario, Canada. A neural network model was created to provide predictions of the lower yield strength (LYS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). The as-received dataset for prediction of mechanical properties comprised chemical composition and hot rolling processing parameters of temperature, roll speed, roll gap, and strip speed. The model was able to predict the LYS of 88% of the test data with an error of less than or equal to ± 5% and the UTS of 99% of the test data within the same error range. The model results were then used to determine the relative influence of each element in the chemical composition and each hot rolling process parameter on the LYS and UTS. Important features for the determination of strength were the strain at the roughing stand, strain at finishing stand number 2, nitrogen (for LYS) and niobium (UTS) concentrations, and the bar entry temperature. The importance of these features can be rationalized on the basis of physical metallurgy principles based on the effect of hot deformation on the formation of Nb(C, N) precipitates. Precipitation start time is expected to be influenced by the grain size of recrystallized austenite inherited from strain at the roughing stand. Depending on the precipitation start time, strain accumulation in austenite begins as early as after finishing stand number 2 and ultimately influences UTS and LYS by the mechanism of grain refinement. The bar entry temperature will influence the temperature profile through the entire hot rolling stage. A potential application of the model is to reduce the variation of mechanical properties. To demonstrate a possible application of this model, it was shown that variations in chemical composition observed in the as-received dataset will lead to mechanical property variations, but these can be countered by modifying the hot rolling process details, thus reducing mechanical property variations"--

Book excerpt: The aim of the project was to acquire the essential metallurgical know-how needed to develop and establish the physical-neural models that would predict the variation of mechanical properties across the length and width of the product. The mechanical properties of steels in the hot-rolled condition should be predicted for a wide range of material compositions - based on the commercial steel grades. The project can divide into physical and neural modelling. In the physical modelling, the input is the time-temperature-strain sequence during hot rolling and the predicted microstructure estimates the Rp0.2, Rm and Ag values. A neural network model able to account for various types of steel was the second main objective. Before modelling, the steels were classified with mathematical analysis into five classes based on the chemical composition, the rolling and coilling temperatures and the final thickness. The test results showed clearly that the neural network models were operating successfuny for various steel types. The third main objective was to develop hybrid models that combine physical models with neural networks. Furthermore, a hybrid model was also developed that specifies the results of neural network calculations using physical models. However, it was realised that, using this preliminary hybrid model for this kind of application, the accuracy of the predictions of mechanical properties of hot-rolled products is not improved essentially, so this development stage can only be taken as an intermediate one.

Book excerpt: A metallurgical model allows the prediction of the mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of hot rolled steel strips immediately after production. Data collection was carried out in three different hot strip mills for the StripCam model validation. A physically based model, CamModel, developed by Corus, has been evaluated as an alternative to the StripCam model for predicting the microstructures of hot rolled strips. Both models generally produce very similar results. Corus has tried to determine the austenite grain size after reheating. The deviations found in the austenite grain size TKS model have no significant impact on the final results. New equations for the phase transformation kinetics model of CRM StripCam have been recalculated. Concerning the model developed by Arcelor Research, the focus was on the growth rate of ferrite assuming a mix mode mechanism: diffusion of carbon in the austenite and intrinsic mobility of the interface. A microstructural-based model for predicting the mechanical properties in ferrite-pearlite steels was developed by Arcelor Research. A mixture law without a fitting parameter is also proposed to determine the flow curve of a ferrite-pearlite microstructure. A major topic of StripCam improvement concerned the bainite mechanical property model. TKS has obtained new equations for a better prediction of the mechanical properties of annealed and of isothermal formed bainite. A more accurate TS equation was also adjusted by CRM. Neural models are able to predict accurately the mechanical properties if they have been properly trained with an adequate dataset. The final models have been extensively validated, showing a prediction error usually within acceptable tolerance ranges.

Book excerpt: As promising next-generation candidates for applications in aero-engines, L12-strengthened cobalt (Co)-based superalloys have attracted extensive attention. However, the L12 strengthening phase in first-generation Co-Al-W-based superalloys is metastable, and both its solvus temperature and mechanical properties still need improvement. Therefore, it is necessary to discover new L12-strengthened Co-based superalloy systems with a stable L12 phase by exploring the effect of alloying elements on their stability. Traditional first-principles calculations are capable of providing the crystal structure and mechanical properties of the L12 phase doped by transition metals but suffer from low efficiency and relatively high computational costs. The present study combines machine learning (ML) with first-principles calculations to accelerate crystal structure and mechanical property predictions, with the latter providing both the training and validation datasets. Three ML models are established and trained to predict the occupancy of alloying elements in the supercell and the stability and mechanical properties of the L12 phase. The ML predictions are evaluated using first-principles calculations and the accompanying data are used to further refine the ML models. Our ML-accelerated first-principles calculation approach offers more efficient predictions of the crystal structure and mechanical properties for Co-V-Ta- and Co-Al-V-based systems than the traditional counterpart. This approach is applicable to expediting crystal structure and mechanical property calculations and thus the design and discovery of other advanced materials beyond Co-based superalloys.

Book excerpt: This book outlines the basic principles of metallurgical design of flat rolled steels to obtain flat steel products with required metallurgical and mechanical properties. These principles establish the requirements for steel chemical composition and the process parameters, including steelmaking, reheating, hot rolling, annealing and cold rolling. Metallurgical Design of Flat Rolled Steels reviews the current theories and experimental works conducted in this area, and gives a comparative analysis of the obtained results in application to a large variety of steels produced around the world. This guide presents essential material in a fashion that permits rapid application to practical problems while providing the structure and understanding necessary for long-term growth. It first explains how the components fit and work together to make a successful experimental design, then analyzes each component in detail, presenting the various approaches in the form of menus of different strategies and options. Then the text illustrates equations developed by various researchers and compares them in both table and graphic forms. Written in a clear and concise manner, the material is presented using a modular or "building block" approach so readers get to see how the entire structure fits together and learn the essential techniques and terminology necessary to develop more complex designs and analyses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents some aspects of multiscale analysis and modeling of variously structured materials behavior in quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. The investigation was performed for two different materials of common application: high strength microalloyed steel (HSLA, X65), and as a reference more ductile material, Ti-IF steel. The MaxStrain technique and one pass hot rolling processes were used to produce ultrafine-grained and coarse-grained materials. The efficiency and inhomogeneity of microstructure refinement were examined because of their important role in work hardening and the initiation and growth of fracture under tensile stresses. It is shown that the combination of microstructures characterized by their different features contributes to the dynamic behavior and final properties of the product. In particular, the role of solute segregation at grain boundaries as well as precipitation of carbonitrides in coarse and ultrafine-grained structures is assessed. The predicted mechanical response of ultrafine-grained structures, using modified KHL model is in reasonable agreement with the experiments. This is a result of proper representation of the role of dislocation structure and the grain boundary and their multiscale effects included in this model.

Book excerpt: The microstructures of both martensite and bainite, although sharing some common features, depict a plethora of subtle differences that made them unique when studied in further detail. Tailoring the final properties of a microstructure based on one or the other as well as in combination with others and exploring more sophisticated concepts, such as Q&P and nanostructured bainite, are the topics which are the focus of research around the world. In understanding the key microstructural parameters controlling the final properties as well as definition of adequate process parameters to attain the desired microstructures requires that a proper understanding of the mechanism ruling their transformation and a detailed characterization first be acheived. The development of new and powerful scientific techniques and equipment (EBSD, APT, HRTEM, etc.) allow us to gain fundamental insights that help to establish some of the principles by which those microstructures are known. The developments accompanying such findings lead to further developments and intensive research providing the required metallurgical support.

Topics covered range from the crystallography of martensite to the transformation temperature and rate of martensite formation. The conditions for martensite formation and stabilization of austenite are also discussed, along with the crystallographic theory of martensitic transformations. Comprised of six chapters, this book begins with an introduction to martensite and martensitic transformation, with emphasis on the basic properties of martensite in steels such as carbon steels. The next two chapters deal with the crystallography of martensite and discuss the martensitic transformation behavior of the second-order transition; lattice imperfections in martensite; and close-packed layer structures of martensites produced from ? phase in noble-metal-base alloys. Thermodynamical problems and kinetics are also analysed, together with conditions for the nucleation of martensite and problems concerning stabilization of austenite. The last chapter discusses the theory of the mechanism underlying martensitic transformation. This monograph will be of interest to metallurgists and materials scientists.
