The purpose of Beyond the 21st Century will be to publish goal- oriented articles leading to improvement of teaching and learning at all levels of psychology education. Until perhaps 20 years ago, educational approaches to teaching were largely informed by a “Stand and Deliver” pedagogical attitude. The psychology of this approach has often invested unrealistic and unrealizable responsibilities in both teachers and students. With the emergence of electronic data sharing (e.g., the Internet) and global cooperation/competition, newer approaches to teaching have begun to supplement and sometimes replace the older model of teaching. These newer approaches have simultaneously taken advantage of technological advances, global changes, and an evolving understanding of successful student-mentor relationships. As the pedagogical models driven by these changes evolve into the 22nd century and beyond, what seems groundbreaking today will, in hindsight, be seen as hidebound. Thus, the major goal of Beyond the 21st Century will be to publish manuscripts which imaginatively, but realistically anticipate future trends in teaching undergraduate psychology. Types of manuscripts which are appropriate for Pedagogical Psychology should be visionary, yet empirically and/or theoretically based. We welcome manuscripts in all domains of pedagogical psychology, with a special interest on topics that are new, or expected to evolve rapidly. Such innovative topics include, but are not limited to: Online and hybrid teaching; Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). How has student success improved with the introduction of online/distance education? Are there dangers associated with online/distance education, especially MOOCS? How can student success be improved as technology evolves beyond the MOOC concept? What technological advances will make psychology education available and useful for more, and more diverse students? How can the physical classroom be transformed into a student centered, effective, virtual environment? Book excerpt: The context of higher education business faculty is changing as a result of the chronic degradation in the production of traditional faculty with doctorates in business-related disciplines (Mauldin, McManis, & Breaux, 2011). As a result of the decline in traditional (first) career path business faculty, non-traditional (second) career path business faculty are transitioning into the academy with a breadth and depth of professional business experience that is now being sought by business schools (Garrison, 2005). The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the factors related to job satisfaction for full-time first and second career business faculty teaching in accredited business programs at public, master's level colleges and universities located in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accreditation region. Herzberg's Motivator-Hygiene Theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Utilizing the constructs of personal characteristics, job characteristics, job satisfaction, and perceived work environment, an online survey collected data from full-time first and second career college and university business faculty. The researcher investigated the importance of and differences in perceptions of Herzberg's motivator-hygiene factors for first and second career business faculty. Additionally, the researcher investigated the relationship between job satisfaction and the motivator-hygiene factors for each category of faculty. Finally, the researcher investigated differences in job satisfaction based on business school accreditation agency and predictors of job satisfaction for first and second career business faculty. Study results indicated higher overall mean scores and identical individual rankings of the motivator factors and lower overall mean scores and nearly identical rankings of the hygiene factors. No statistically significant differences in motivator and hygiene factor mean scores were observed between first and second career faculty. Study results revealed medium to moderately strong positive correlations between job satisfaction and the motivator and hygiene factors for first and second career faculty. No significant difference in job satisfaction was observed for first and second career faculty. Multiple regression analysis produced a predictive model of four motivator and hygiene factors for first career faculty and a second career model including personal and job characteristics and motivator and hygiene factors.

Book excerpt: This study examined the ability of four groups of factors to predict the job satisfaction levels of fulltime, exempt, professional staff at four institutions of higher education within the associated Colleges of the South consortium. Based on a similar study of professionals in higher education conducted by Smerek and Peterson (2007), this study used hierarchical multiple regression to determine the amount of variability explained by each group of factors according to the conceptual model. The conceptual model for this study, as well as the study by Smerek and Peterson, was based on the theory of Frederick Herzberg (1959), an industrial organizational psychologist who described job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction as disparate variables. Professional staff members received an anonymous web-based survey that measured levels of job satisfaction and collected information on personal and work characteristics. The survey also collected employee responses to two categories of variables -- motivator factors and hygiene factors -- identified by Herzberg as components of job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction. Results of this survey suggested that four variables accounted for statistically significant portions of job satisfaction -- responsibility, work itself, effective supervisor, and recognition. One variable had a negative statistically significant relationship with job satisfaction -- core values. The combination of statistically significant factors supports the acceptance of one of this study's hypotheses, that the Herzberg duality theory of job satisfaction is not supported in a higher education context. The job satisfaction levels of fulltime professional exempt employees in higher education matter; not only have higher levels of job satisfaction been connected to higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness, increases in job satisfaction have been linked to more positive work environments, improved campus culture, higher employee retention and ultimately with institutions identified as "Great Places to Work For." The importance of job satisfaction in the higher education environment and was the impetus for this examination of Herzberg's duality theory of motivation. The results of this study are encouraging for leaders in higher education as they suggest opportunities for increasing job satisfaction that may be of relatively low cost while creating high impact.

As faculty are forward-facing, customer-serving, grant-receiving employees who directly impact the bottom line, monitoring their job satisfaction is similar to a wellness check; done regularly, one can find otherwise unknown issues before they become detrimental to the health of the organization. A survey created by Smerek and Peterson (2007) was modified to fit the population under study. The survey questions were grouped by job factors identified in the Two-Factor Theory by Herzberg et al. (1959) and used a 6-point Likert scale. Additional questions were employed to assess how recent events impacted job satisfaction. Data were analyzed by faculty status, college of appointment, gender, and minority status. Although not irrefutable, the data show that despite negative perceptions of total compensation and senior management, faculty have job satisfaction driven by satisfaction with the work itself and good relationships with co-workers and direct supervisors. In other words, faculty find satisfaction in the work, but not the work environment.

This quantitative research study measured levels of job satisfaction, organizational and religious commitment as well as 5 demographic variables for 835 employees of a private religious university. The study revealed that university employees were most satisfied with their relations with students and peers, and least satisfied with their salary and organizational policy. It was shown that overall job satisfaction and its intrinsic and extrinsic facets were influenced by demographic variables, such as age, educational level, and occupational area. Organizational commitment was related to age and educational level. Moderate correlations were found between organizational commitment and job satisfaction. A seven-predictor model explained 44.2% of the variance of organizational commitment with different models for the occupational subgroups. Religious commitment did not have a mediating effect on the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment.

Book excerpt: Abstract: In an effort to stay competitive in the increasingly more challenging business world, companies are constantly trying to develop new ways in which to improve their organizations. One way to accomplish this is by improving overall employee satisfaction, which has been found to be correlated with increased customer satisfaction, and increased profits. Thus, by gaining a greater understanding of their employees' perceived level of satisfaction, and by working toward enhancing it, organizations should be able to better serve their customers. While the evidence on higher employee satisfaction being correlated with greater customer satisfaction is presented in the literature, it is mostly anecdotal. Further, research has not looked into various facets of employee satisfaction and how they relate to various facets of customer satisfaction. Finally, while employee satisfaction issues have been discussed in various organizational settings, I have not been able to locate research on faculty satisfaction and its relationship to various aspects of student satisfaction in a university setting. My research seeks to examine the correlations between several aspects of faculty satisfaction and student satisfaction within a university setting. In this environment, faculty members are employees of the organization and students may be viewed as its customers. Each group derives satisfaction from different aspects of what occurs at the university, yet the satisfaction experienced by one group is expected to affect their performance, and thus the satisfaction experienced by the other group. For example, a faculty member who is happy with his or her colleagues may be motivated to do more team-teaching and enhance the learning experience (and thus satisfaction) of students. This project requires data to be gathered from two groups - faculty and students. Data on faculty satisfaction with various aspects of their job are available by department through an organization that conducts such surveys at various universities every three years. To understand student satisfaction, a survey of current undergraduate students will also be undertaken. The survey will examine student satisfaction with various aspects of their academic experience at the university. Based on the data obtained from the two surveys, we plan to compute correlations between facets of faculty satisfaction that are hypothesized to have the greatest impact on student satisfaction. I believe that this research will not only help The Ohio State University and its various departments, but also any other university that is interested in enhancing the satisfaction levels of its various constituents. University administrators can use this information to understand which aspects of their work experience faculty members of a certain department are more satisfied with and whether this has an effect on student satisfaction. This research model may be applied for further study by analyzing universities that are different than the large, urban, public university that has been surveyed in this study. The concept of correlating facets of employee satisfaction to customer satisfaction could also be applied to any organizational setting. This additional research will advance the understanding of employee and customer satisfaction and the correlations discovered through this study.
