Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The response of advanced composite structures to fire was investigated. An analytical technique originally developed for ablative materials was adapted to this problem. The technique includes calculation of heat transfer, chemical degradation, production and flow of decomposition gasses and resulting internal pressures, stresses, and failure. Sample analyses illustrated the behavior of composite structures exposed to fire. Simple experiments qualitatively confirmed the analytic results, and provided additional insights. Advantages of composite structures included very long bum-through times, and self insulation of thick structures through blistering. Disadvantages included vulnerability of thin structures and creation of difficult to detect impact-like damage from even brief exposure to fire. Keywords: composite materials, analytical methods, numerical models, fire, high temperatures, damage, aircraft structures, safety.

Book excerpt: The increased use of advanced fibrous composite materials for aircraft structures necessitates the creation of an effective life prediction methodology. The establishment of life prediction procedures is the objective of this AFWAL/FDL-sponsored program. These life prediction methodologies are founded upon the experimentally documented damage accumulation process, and the reduction in material stiffness that is associated with the development of damage. The required information has been generated through an extensive experimental program. The damage accumulation process and subsequent stiffness change have been documented under a wide variety of load conditions. The chronology and correlations between the observed damage state and laminate stiffness provide a foundation for the understanding of the basic mechanisms that control the strength and life of composite aircraft components. This report consists of two volumes. Volume 1 contains a summary of the test results as well as information pertinent to the development and validation of the life prediction procedures. The second volume contains seven appendices which include detailed test results.

Book excerpt: Traditionally the vast majority of materials characterization techniques have been destructive, e. g. , chemical compositional analysis, metallographic determination of microstructure, tensile test measurement of mechanical properties, etc. Also, traditionally, nondestructive techniques have been used almost exclusively for the detection of macroscopic defects, mostly cracks, in structures and devices which have already been constructed and have already been in service for an extended period of time. Following these conventional nondestructive tests, it has been common practice to use somewhat arbitrary accept-reject criteria to decide whether or not the structure or device should be removed from service. The present unfavorable status of a large segment of industry, coupled with the desire to keep structures in service well past their original design life, dramatically show that our traditional approaches must be drastically modified if we are to be able to meet future needs. The role of nondestructive characterization of materials is changing and will continue to change dramatically. It has become increasingly evident that it is both practical and cost effective to expand the role of nondestructive evaluation to include all aspects of materials' production and application and to introduce it much earlier in the manufacturing cycle. In fact, the recovery of a large portion of industry from severe economic problems is dependent, in part, on the successful implementation of this expanded role.

Book excerpt: The course deals with the crucial central question: how can one predict the evolution of damage up to and including final fracture ?Emerging yet mature answers will be presented. First, a description of today's common approaches in industrial environments will be given, along with their limits regarding the design and calculation of stratified composite structures. The course also emphasizes the damage mesomodel initiated at LMT-Cachan and used today in a number of calculation codes. This advanced yet pragmatic tool for the prediction of damage in stratified materials has become mature thanks particularly to the works of LMT-Cachan on its relation to micromechanics, EADS-Innovation Works on its identification, and DLR on its application to impact and crash problems. The course aims to give engineers and researchers the most complete view possible of the state-of-the-art and emerging techniques in damage prediction and failure analysis of laminated composite structures.

Book excerpt: Due to their high performance and weight efficiency, carbon fiber composites are increasingly being used in aircraft primary structure applications. Exposed composite structures (e.g., fuselage lower body) are susceptible accidental impacts by ground service equipment (GSE). The very high mass (over 10,000 kg) of GSE impact can involve high energy (over 1000 J) and thus can induce significant internal damage. Furthermore, the large contact area potentially involved with GSE impact can create significant internal delamination and fiber failure without leaving exterior-visible signs that any damage has occurred. The objectives of the research described herein are to : (1) conduct experimental investigation into the composite aircraft damage caused by GSE impact, (2) examine the small-scale failure modes in focused, element-level studies, (3) establish a finite element modeling methodology involving detailed simulation capability that is validated via small-scale tests, and (4) apply these modeling capabilities to accurately predict full-scale structural behavior without adjustment (e.g., tuning) of modeling input parameters.

Book excerpt: A through review of the existing impact test data and analysis methods was conducted and the results were used to identify a reliability prediction methodology for further development. The integrated residual strength/reliability method developed by Northrop Grumman under a Navy/Federal Aviation Administration sponsored program was selected and modified. The modification was primarily in reducing the number of empirical constants required in the model. In addition, a cutoff energy level and a threshold energy level were also established analytically for the strength prediction. A structural damage tolerance evaluation was conducted using the modified model and the results compared to those obtained from the existing model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composites used in aeronautical and naval structures can be exposed to accidental fires which may have a detrimental effect on their integrity. The goals of the present investigation are to establish a framework through which the issue of fire damage to composite materials can be evaluated, to conduct a thorough review of previous work on the topic, to supplement previous knowledge through experimentation and analysis, and to develop a succinct description of the current level of understanding of this subject. An experimental investigation is undertaken to study the physical changes that occur within AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy composites as a result of exposure to a propane flame. Visual observation of the exterior and cross-sections of the specimens, optical microscopy, and planimetric measurements of the area of matrix loss on the exposed face of the laminates provide information regarding how the extent of damage varies with the time of exposure. Mass loss is measured. Microscopic examinations and microhardness tests are used to survey the distribution of charring throughout cross-sections of burned laminates. The relationships between damage to the material and changes in structural behavior are investigated by a study of the loss of tensile strength of graphite/epoxy coupons burned in a circular area in the center of the panel. Comparison of tensile test results with calculated tensile strengths of coupons with various geometries provides insight into the structural damage mechanisms. This research is supplemented by analysis of results obtained from fire damage research conducted by teams of undergraduate investigators, including temperature distribution measurements and tests of sandwich panels. Thermocouple data and measurements of the depth of char within specimens is correlated with analytical results from a predictive code. Analytical temperature and char depth predictions are satisfactory, although better material data is needed and, in some cases, a more complex 2- or 3-D analysis is called for. The temperature range in which charring begins and material properties permanently change is identified. The structural behavior of tensile coupons with centrally-located circular burns cannot be explained by existing analytical models. The structural behavior of sandwich panels is more fully understood.
