Book excerpt: Baseline fatigue crack growth data at R = 0 and mechanical property data have been generated on 66 different rail materials which are in service on U.S. railroads. These data are evaluated, along with metallurgical variables such as chemical composition and microstructure, in an attempt to develop a correlation of mechanical and metallurgical factors affecting crack behavior in rail steels. The ultimate objective of this effort is the development of a rail failure model to enable the determination of safe inspection intervals, through prediction of fatigue crack growth in rail under service loading.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth data sets, for pressure vessel and piping steels, in reactor-grade water environment have appeared in various reports and publications since about 1972. All of the results which have been published from 1972 through 1979 have been plotted and are presented in this report. Beginning with a discussion of the need for these data, and an explanation of the laboratory facilities which are required for this research, this report goes on to describe the overall trends which have evolved through consideration of the data sets and the conditions under which they were generated. A model for hydrogen assisted fatigue crack growth is described and applied to the pressurized water reactor type of environment. A complete listing of references is included in the report. (Author).

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth and Fracture Behavior of Bainitic Rail Steels written by Heshmat A. Aglan and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microstructure-mechanical properties relationships, fracture toughness, fatigue crack growth and fracture surface morphology of J6 bainitic, manganese, and pearlitic rail steels were studied. Microstructure-mechanical properties correlation of the three rail steels under consideration revealed that the bainitic rail steel has the highest mechanical properties as compared with austenitic manganese steel (AMS) and pearlitic rail steels. AMS shows very few signs of being work hardened or toughened, which usually increases the mechanical properties of the material. In pearlite, the microstructure has more detailed features that contribute to its mechanical properties. The bainitic steel has more alloying elements that when mixed, create so many dislocations that the dislocations cannot move against each other. This is where bainitic steel derives its strength. Fracture toughness analysis (KIc) of the three rail steels, namely bainitic, manganese and pearlitic was performed. A valid KIc was determined for the pearlitic and bainitic steels based on the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) E399 criteria.
Book Synopsis Fatigue of Structures and Materials by : J. Schijve
Download or read book Fatigue of Structures and Materials written by J. Schijve and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Download or read book The Effect of Grain Boundary Ferrite on Fatigue Crack Propagation in Pearlitic Rail Steels written by GJ. Fowler and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth has been examined in pearlitic rail steels to determine the effect of grain boundary ferrite and nonmetallic inclusions on the rates of crack propagation under Mode I loading at ambient temperature. The influence of alternating and maximum stress intensity on fatigue crack propagation in these materials has also been evaluated. The data were obtained using single-edge notch specimens machined from the head of rails and the web of wheels. Cyclic loading was performed on a hydraulic test machine at various R ratios.
