Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the cavitation erosion phenomenon and state-of-the-art research in the field. It is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of seven chapters, offering a wide range of computational and experimental approaches to cavitation erosion. It includes a general introduction to cavitation and cavitation erosion a detailed description of facilities and measurement techniques commonly used in cavitation erosion studies, an extensive presentation of various stages of cavitation damage (including incubation and mass loss) and insights into the contribution of computational methods to the analysis of both fluid and material behavior. The proposed approach is based on a detailed description of impact loads generated by collapsing cavitation bubbles and a physical analysis of the material response to these loads. Part 2 is devoted to a selection of nine papers presented at the International Workshop on Advanced Experimental and Numerical Techniques for Cavitation Erosion Prediction (Grenoble, France, 1-2 March 2011) representing the forefront of research on cavitation erosion. Innovative numerical and experimental investigations illustrate the most advanced breakthroughs in cavitation erosion research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New results from cavitating venturi water tests are used to reinforce the concept of 'cavitation erosion efficiency', previously developed here from tests in a vibratory facility with both water and sodium. This concept emerges from a technique herein described to allow a priori prediction of eventual cavitation erosion rates in flowing machines. Bubble collapse pulse height spectra obtained from submerged microprobes are correlated with measured erosion rates in given laboratory and/or field devices to allow this prediction. Preliminary results from such correlations, along with other measurements of the effects of gas content, velocity, and cavitation condition upon 'mechanical' cavitation intensity as measured by the pulse height spectra, are here presented. New results from vibratory facility tests in tap water and synthetic sea water upon three materials of variable corrodibility (304 SS, 1018 carbon steel, and 1100-0 aluminum) are also presented. The ratio between maximum erosion rates for the salt and fresh water tests are found to increase toward unity as the mechanical cavitation intensity is increased, i.e., increased MDPR. This is expected on theoretical grounds. Finally, the relation between incubation period and maximum MDPR is examined from the vibratory test results, and found to depend upon the material properties as well as the fluid-flow conditions. Book excerpt: In order to predict and avoid cavitation erosion, it is necessary to know the resistance of materials to cavitation impacts. It is proposed that only cavitation impacts with energy larger than a certain threshold level affect the cavitation erosion of materials. Weak cavitation impacts have small impact energy, which cannot produce elastic or plastic deformation on materials. Cavitation erosion does not take place in this situation. On the other hand, strong cavitation impacts have large impact energy, which generates plastic deformation and/or causes damage with mass loss. It is proposed that only cavitation impacts that are larger than a certain threshold level affect the cavitation erosion of materials. In this paper, the existence of such a threshold level is revealed experimentally. The fundamental threshold level of the material is a new parameter suitable for the prediction of cavitation erosion rate. The erosion rates for several materials were determined by using a cavitating jet erosion test, which forms a new ASTM standard, ASTM G 134. The cavitation impacts induced by the cavitating jet were measured by means of a specially made PVDF transducer and the energy of the cavitation impacts were then calculated. The fundamental threshold levels for several materials were obtained from the relationship between the erosion rate and the energy of the cavitation impacts. A method to predict cavitation erosion quantitatively from the fundamental threshold level of the material and the measurement of cavitation impacts is proposed.

Book excerpt: A study of cavitation structures and erosive effect of cavitation is presented in the thesis. For the evaluation of cavitation structures a computer aided visualization was employed. The magnitude and the position of the damage on the surface of the hydrofoil were determined by the pit-count method. A strong correlation between the dynamics of cavitation structures and the damage of the hydrofoil surface was determined. A PIV-LIF method was used for the measurements of the velocity field in the vicinity of the hydrofoil. Static pressure on the surface of the hydrofoil was measured and the dynamics of cavitation cloud separation was observed. Simulations of cavitating flow were preformed, using computational fluid dynamics. Results of simulation (velocity distribution, the shape and dynamics of cavitation, distribution of the pressure on the hydrofoil surface ...) are in a good agreement with measured values. Development of the cavitation erosion model is presented. Model predictions agree well with measurements of the damaged surface of the hydrofoil. It was shown, by coupling the simulation of cavitation and cavitation erosion model, that the damage of the surface can be predicted, with a sufficient accuracy, using only numerical tools. The model was further tested on a radial pump impeller where predictions agreed well with the experimentally determined damage. Results of the thesis promise a good possibility of prediction and control of damage caused by cavitation erosion in real hydraulic machines in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats cavitation, which is a unique phenomenon in the field of hyd- dynamics, although it can occur in any hydraulic machinery such as pumps, propellers, artificial hearts, and so forth. Cavitation is generated not only in water, but also in any kind of fluid, such as liquid hydrogen. The generation of cavitation can cause severe damage in hydraulic machinery. Therefore, the prevention of cavitation is an important concern for designers of hydraulic machinery. On the contrary, there is great potential to utilize cavitation in various important applications, such as environmental protection. There have been several books published on cavitation, including one by the same authors. This book differs from those previous ones, in that it is both more physical and more theoretical. Any theoretical explanation of the cavitation phenomenon is rather difficult, but the authors have succeeded in explaining it very well, and a reader can follow the equations easily. It is an advantage in reading this book to have some understanding of the physics of cavitation. Therefore, this book is not an introductory text, but a book for more advanced study. However, this does not mean that this book is too difficult for a beginner, because it explains the cavitation phenomenon using many figures. Therefore, even a beginner on cavitation can read and can understand what cavitation is. If the student studies through this book (with patience), he or she can become an expert on the physics of cavitation.
