Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pressure fluctuations beneath equilibrium boundary layers at subsonic and supersonic speeds are reviewed. Empirical formulae are presented for the intensity, spectra, and cross spectra of the fluctuations. The formulae are intended for direct use in structural response calculations. A simple theoretical model to predict intensities at supersonic speeds is put forward, and the effects of nonequilibrium boundary layers are discussed in general terms. An appendix gives theoretical justification for negative exponential correlation curves at large spacings. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted at the AEDC von Karman facility, Tunnels A and B, in which acoustic pressure fluctuation data were acquired on a 7 degree half-cone-angle model featuring a control surface. The objective was to define the aeroacoustic environment applicable to re-entry vibration response analysis for both ballistic and maneuvering vehicles. Wind tunnel measurements were obtained at Mach 4 and 8 for several values of freestream Reynolds number and model angle of attack. Stationary zones of laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow over the model were achieved. Acoustic data were reduced to rms fluctuating pressure, and power and cross-power spectral densities. Results were normalized using local boundary layer parameters for comparison with previous high speed measurements. The present study re-examined the aeroacoustic environment prediction capability relative to compressible flow conditions. Moreover, boundary layer characteristic lengths and velocities were reviewed in order to develop normalization procedures required for development of appropriate aeroacoustic scaling laws. It was determined that fluctuating pressure characteristics described by incompressible theory as well as empirical correlations could be modified to a compressible state through a transformation function. In this manner, compressible data were transformed to the incompressible plane where direct use of more tractable prediction techniques are available for engineering design analyses.

Book excerpt: A semiempirical expression for boundary-layer transition location is developed based on the concept of a critical ratio of inertial to viscous shearing stresses at laminar breakdown. Extensive comparisons between predicted and measured transition locations on a 10-deg included-angle cone at transonic speeds are shown with the data predicted to within 10%. Comparisons are also made with low subsonic and supersonic data which indicate the method is extendible to these flow regimes. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface pressure fluctuations below turbulent boundary layers were studied, in part, because they can be regarded as 'footprints' of passing turbulent eddies. The pressure fluctuations are formally described by a Poisson equation, implying that the pressure fluctuation at a given point is mathematically represented by the integral of a 'source' term over the whole flow field, with a weighting inversely proportional to the distance of the source from the given point. In turbulent boundary layers, fluctuations were made in a low-speed constant pressure the high-frequency part of the wall pressure fluctuations is generated mainly within the inner layer - say, the first 20% of the boundary layer thickness - and the low-frequency part is generated mainly in the outer layer. Measurements of velocity and surface-pressure turbulent boundary layer well downstream of an extensive region of wall roughness. The turbulence near the wall was representative of a smooth-wall flow, while that in the outer layer was typical of the upper stream rough-wall flow. Comparison with previous measurements on an entirely smooth wall illustrates the relative contributions of the inner and outer layers to the surface pressure fluctuations. Further work has been done to compare the VITA (Variable ge) conditional-sampling algorithm withuctuations were more advanced algorithms. Keywords: Turbulent boundary layer, Noise measurement, Statistical analysis, Surface roughness, and VITA algorithm.

Book excerpt: A numerical model of turbulent boundary layer flows over compliant walls was investigated. The model is based on Burton's observation that outer flow structures in turbulent boundary layers produce large scale pressure fluctuations near the wall. The results of calculations indicate that certain small wavelength wall motions can have a significant effect upon the stability of turbulent boundary layers. Orszag, S. A.
