This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the cavitation erosion phenomenon and state-of-the-art research in the field. It is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of seven chapters, offering a wide range of computational and experimental approaches to cavitation erosion. It includes a general introduction to cavitation and cavitation erosion a detailed description of facilities and measurement techniques commonly used in cavitation erosion studies, an extensive presentation of various stages of cavitation damage (including incubation and mass loss) and insights into the contribution of computational methods to the analysis of both fluid and material behavior. The proposed approach is based on a detailed description of impact loads generated by collapsing cavitation bubbles and a physical analysis of the material response to these loads. Part 2 is devoted to a selection of nine papers presented at the International Workshop on Advanced Experimental and Numerical Techniques for Cavitation Erosion Prediction (Grenoble, France, 1-2 March 2011) representing the forefront of research on cavitation erosion. Innovative numerical and experimental investigations illustrate the most advanced breakthroughs in cavitation erosion research.

Book excerpt: The intensity of bubble collapse is defined as the power transmitted per unit surface area of the bubble when the collapse pressure is a maximum and is given by the square of the collapse pressure divided by the acoustic impedence of the liquid. The efficiency of damage is defined as the ratio of the intensity of erosion of the material to the intensity of bubble collapse. Quantitative analysis is made to show how this efficiency would be affected by various physical effects such as inertia, damping of gas and vapor inside the bubble, heat transfer, compressibility, surface tension and viscosity. Experimental results with vibratory apparatus show that the efficiency of damage is primarily controlled by the damping of non-condensible gases and vapor. At higher temperature viscosity also seems to be important. Within the range of experiments, surface tension of the liquids tested seems to be unimportant. The group of non-dimensional numbers derived from the above analysis as used to formulate a modeling technique to predict the rate of depth of erosion in actual operating hydrodynamic systems. This book was released on 2005 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of cavitation structures and erosive effect of cavitation is presented in the thesis. For the evaluation of cavitation structures a computer aided visualization was employed. The magnitude and the position of the damage on the surface of the hydrofoil were determined by the pit-count method. A strong correlation between the dynamics of cavitation structures and the damage of the hydrofoil surface was determined. A PIV-LIF method was used for the measurements of the velocity field in the vicinity of the hydrofoil. Static pressure on the surface of the hydrofoil was measured and the dynamics of cavitation cloud separation was observed. Simulations of cavitating flow were preformed, using computational fluid dynamics. Results of simulation (velocity distribution, the shape and dynamics of cavitation, distribution of the pressure on the hydrofoil surface ...) are in a good agreement with measured values. Development of the cavitation erosion model is presented. Model predictions agree well with measurements of the damaged surface of the hydrofoil. It was shown, by coupling the simulation of cavitation and cavitation erosion model, that the damage of the surface can be predicted, with a sufficient accuracy, using only numerical tools. The model was further tested on a radial pump impeller where predictions agreed well with the experimentally determined damage. Results of the thesis promise a good possibility of prediction and control of damage caused by cavitation erosion in real hydraulic machines in the future.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Cavitation by : Jean-Pierre Franc
Download or read book Fundamentals of Cavitation written by Jean-Pierre Franc and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats cavitation, which is a unique phenomenon in the field of hyd- dynamics, although it can occur in any hydraulic machinery such as pumps, propellers, artificial hearts, and so forth. Cavitation is generated not only in water, but also in any kind of fluid, such as liquid hydrogen. The generation of cavitation can cause severe damage in hydraulic machinery. Therefore, the prevention of cavitation is an important concern for designers of hydraulic machinery. On the contrary, there is great potential to utilize cavitation in various important applications, such as environmental protection. There have been several books published on cavitation, including one by the same authors. This book differs from those previous ones, in that it is both more physical and more theoretical. Any theoretical explanation of the cavitation phenomenon is rather difficult, but the authors have succeeded in explaining it very well, and a reader can follow the equations easily. It is an advantage in reading this book to have some understanding of the physics of cavitation. Therefore, this book is not an introductory text, but a book for more advanced study. However, this does not mean that this book is too difficult for a beginner, because it explains the cavitation phenomenon using many figures. Therefore, even a beginner on cavitation can read and can understand what cavitation is. If the student studies through this book (with patience), he or she can become an expert on the physics of cavitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New results from cavitating venturi water tests are used to reinforce the concept of 'cavitation erosion efficiency', previously developed here from tests in a vibratory facility with both water and sodium. This concept emerges from a technique herein described to allow a priori prediction of eventual cavitation erosion rates in flowing machines. Bubble collapse pulse height spectra obtained from submerged microprobes are correlated with measured erosion rates in given laboratory and/or field devices to allow this prediction. Preliminary results from such correlations, along with other measurements of the effects of gas content, velocity, and cavitation condition upon 'mechanical' cavitation intensity as measured by the pulse height spectra, are here presented. New results from vibratory facility tests in tap water and synthetic sea water upon three materials of variable corrodibility (304 SS, 1018 carbon steel, and 1100-0 aluminum) are also presented. The ratio between maximum erosion rates for the salt and fresh water tests are found to increase toward unity as the mechanical cavitation intensity is increased, i.e., increased MDPR. This is expected on theoretical grounds. Finally, the relation between incubation period and maximum MDPR is examined from the vibratory test results, and found to depend upon the material properties as well as the fluid-flow conditions. Book Synopsis Correlating Models and Prediction of Erosion Resistance to Cavitation and Drop Impact by : P. Veerabhadra Rao
Download or read book Correlating Models and Prediction of Erosion Resistance to Cavitation and Drop Impact written by P. Veerabhadra Rao and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using venturi and rotating disk data, correlations are established between volume loss rates obtained from different stages of volume loss-time curves and various single and multiple material properties. The significance of correlations and relationships is judged from various statistical parameters computed. The analysis indicates that during the initial and development phases hardness and shock compression ratio play a predominant role, and once the erosion develops modified resilience and tensile strength significantly influence the erosion phenomenon. For the correlations involving volume loss taken from the initial and development phases the statistical parameters exhibit considerable variation, while in the developed phase their variation is insignificant. Analyses of extensive erosion data from the authors' laboratory and from other laboratories indicate that groupings of properties like ultimate resilience x hardness (UH) and tensile strength x hardness (T,H) or groupings such as UHE and UHT, exhibit best correlations. Several equations are proposed to predict erosion rates of various materials tested in different laboratories.
Book Synopsis Experimental Studies to Establish Scaling Laws for Modeling Cavitation Damage Intensity by : R. E. Kohl
Download or read book Experimental Studies to Establish Scaling Laws for Modeling Cavitation Damage Intensity written by R. E. Kohl and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental facility called the 'rotating foil apparatus' was designed and built to study cavitation erosion in an actual but controllable hydrodynamic system. Test results from this apparatus have confirmed the time dependence of cavitation intensity and also indicated the relationship between erosion intensity (I sub e) and cavitation parameter (sigma) for an NACA 16-021 foil section at 181 ft/sec. A family of the I sub e versus sigma curves is sought for several velocities so that the true relation between I sub e and velocity can be established thus providing a clue of the pressure which causes the bubbles to collapse. Additional testing is planned to determine the relationship between Reynold's number (Re) and erosion intensity (I sub e) for several values of cavitation parameter (sigma). The ultimate objective is modeling cavitation erosion. (Author).

Book Synopsis Constitutive Modelling and Failure Prediction for Silicone Adhesives in Façade Design by : Michael Drass
Download or read book Constitutive Modelling and Failure Prediction for Silicone Adhesives in Façade Design written by Michael Drass and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers with an elementary understanding of the material behavior of structural silicones in façades. Based on extensive experimental investigations on a transparent structural silicone adhesive (TSSA), the material behavior, failure, and microscopic effects such as stress whitening, cavitation failure, and the Mullins effect are analyzed. In turn, novel hyperelastic material models are developed to account for nonlinear material behavior under arbitrary deformations. The development of a volumetric hyperelastic model makes it possible for the first time to approximate the structural behavior of TSSA under constrained tensile load and cavitation. The material models discussed here were implemented in a finite element code for validation, and their quality was confirmed by three-dimensional numerical simulations, in which an additional stretch-based failure criterion was evaluated for failure prediction. The numerical studies are in good agreement with the experimental results.
