Results of laboratory tests and field performance studies were correlated and guidance for selection of repair materials that would reduce the risk of premature failures was developed. This guidance includes a standard protocol for repair material data sheets and proposed performance criteria. Results of this study illustrate the significant effect of drying shrinkage on the performance of restrained repair materials. While there was a general correlation between the results of laboratory tests on unrestrained shrinkage specimens and field performance, there is a need for restrained shrinkage tests to evaluate the cracking resistance of repair materials. Although there was a general lack of significant correlation between individual material properties and field performance, results of this study indicate that it is possible to predict the field performance of repair materials based on a combination of material properties determined in laboratory tests. Results of this study emphasize the need for a comprehensive analytical model to predict the cracking resistance of repair materials that considers the interrelationship of pertinent material properties, the relative importance of individual properties, and the effect of environmental conditions on time-dependent material properties.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this thesis is to increase the performance of repair materials in concrete overlays. To meet this objective, a new material selection process is applied. Then, with a focus on volume change in concrete overlays new models for shrinkage and creep are developed, and the ACI model for shrinkage is modified. First, a straightforward repair material selection procedure which covers all criteria and technical requirements is developed. In this regard, a recently proposed MCDM method, namely comprehensive VIKOR is used. Then, the strategy is applied on five different types of patch repair materials to validate the accuracy of the outcomes of the proposed procedure. Second, the improvement of ACI model for shrinkage of concrete containing three types of pozzolans including silica fume (SF) Fly ash (FA) and Slag (SL) is conducted base on a comprehensive database. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method is used to modify time function of ACI model for each type of pozzolan. In addition, a new correction factor associated with compressive strength is generated to capture the effect of dosage and type of each pozzolans. The results of several indicators show better prediction performance the modied ACI model compared to it's original formula. Third, new empirical models are derived to predict the compressive strength of preformed foam cellular concrete using volumetric and weighted approaches. The proposed models are generated by utilizing a robust predictive tool known as genetic programming. A comprehensive database is collected from the literature to cover a wide range of mixture components (such as sand and pozzolans) and mix proportions. The models link the compressive strength to binder, water, and foam volume. Validation of the best model is carried out by using a portion of the data set that is not employed in the calibration process. A comparative study is conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed model versus other models presented in the literature. Sensitivity and parametric analyses were conducted. The final model has a simple formulation and provides better prediction performance than the other models in the literature.

In Phase I of the study, preliminary criteria for dimensionally compatible repair materials were developed based on a review of the literature. This review concentrated on identifying pertinent material properties, appropriate test methods, and demonstrated field performance. Laboratory and field tests to evaluate the preliminary performance criteria were conducted in Phase II of the project Twelve candidate repair materials were selected for the experimental portion of the project Bach material was subjected to a series of standard and nonstandard laboratory tests to determine properties which were perceived to be of interest in a repair context and to provide some basic information about their behavior. These tests included: (a) unrestrained and restrained drying shrinkage, (b) modulus of elasticity, (c) tensile and compressive creep, (d) coefficient of thermal expansion, and (e) flexural, compressive, and direct tensile strengths. Concurrent field tests were also conducted to evaluate material durability. Results of the laboratory investigation are described herein. Results of laboratory and field performance tests will be correlated (Phase III) to provide a basis for development of performance criteria for cement-based materials that will provide durable concrete repairs.

Book excerpt: A wide variety of rapid set patching materials are available in the industry for repair of concrete. However, the selection of an appropriate material for a particular repair job is challenging as these materials possess a range of physical and mechanical properties and definitive criteria for establishing the compatibility between repair materials and substrate concrete are not adequately defined. Improper selection of repair material, without investigating the compatibility between repair materials and substrate concrete, is a common reason for failure. In this research study, compatibility between eight repair materials, that are on the approved list of the South Carolina Department of Transportation, and a typical substrate concrete was investigated in three stages. First, individual properties of the repair materials such as setting time, flow, compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength, bond strength, drying shrinkage, freeze-thaw resistance, and permeability, were determined using standard ASTM test procedures. Second, the compatibility between repair material and substrate concrete was investigated by testing a composite beam (substrate concrete patched with repair material) in flexure under third point loading. Third, a correlation between the individual repair material properties and the performance of the composite beam was investigated to predict the compatibility of the concrete repair. Based on these studies, the compatibility of the repair materials was evaluated and a new test method is proposed to examine the compatibility between repair material and substrate concrete.

Book excerpt: Concrete repair materials are being widely used to restore and extend the service life of structures. While most cement-based repair materials are compatible with concrete structures, their durability properties do not attract much attention which it deserves from researchers. Since repair materials can deteriorate like conventional concrete, the search for reliable, long-lasting concrete repair materials is becoming more intensive. Amongst other factors, concrete permeability and chloride diffusivity within concrete are believed to play a major role in determining the durability and success of the repair. These two parameters determine the penetration rate of aggressive substances into concrete and how fast degradation could take place. A number of test methods have been proposed to study these two factors, and the commonly used test methods are water penetration, surface/bulk electrical resistivity, rapid chloride permeability (RCP), and half-cell potential. However, the relationship between each durability test method and their correlation with compressive strength measurement have not been fully understood. So, in this study, we aim for using multiple testing techniques, destructive and non-destructive, to evaluate the durability of concrete repair materials as well as correlating different test methods. Three types of commercially available cement-based materials are tested and evaluated, and results have indicated that cementitious concrete mortar (termed as Mix M) amongst others has the best durability performance which means low water permeability, high resistivity, and compressive strength. Whereas, the flexural performance of Mix M still needs some improvement in terms of flexural strength and flexural toughness. For various durability testing methods, surface resistivity is found to have a strong linear relation and a polynomial relation to bulk resistivity and water permeability respectively. No relationship is established between concrete resistivity and compressive strength, though high-strength concrete tends to have a high resistivity in our study. RCP test results do not correlate well with resistivity measurements, which requires further study to overcome its heating and binding effect when measurements are being taken. Half-cell potential method is used for validating test results but it reveals no difference for materials with different permeability and resistivity. A model is proposed to counteract temperature's effect while calculating the coefficient of diffusion, which indicates the concrete to resist chloride diffusion. It is found that this model can shift the RCP measurement slightly closer to its theoretical prediction but the difference between them is still large. Therefore, further research is required for acquiring more raw data from RCP measurements as the regression analysis input. In addition, a more comprehensive model that involves more correction factors for binding effects, etc., is also needed.
