Even as the number of Latinas/os attending college has actually increased steadily over the last few decades, the proportional representation of Latino males continues to slide relative to their Latina female counterparts. The question of why Latino males are losing ground in accessing higher education—relative to their peers—is an important and complex one, and it lies at the heart of this book. There are several broad themes highlighted, catalogued along with the four dimensions of policy, theory, research, and practice. The contributors to this book present new research on factors that inhibit or promote Latino success in both four-year institutions and community colleges in order to inform both policy and practice. They explore the social-cultural factors, peer dynamics, and labor force demands that may be perpetuating the growing gender gap, and consider what lessons can be learned from research on the success of Latinas. This book also closely examines key practices that enable first generation Latino male undergraduates to succeed which may seem counterintuitive to institutional expectations and preconceived notions of student behavior. Predictor variables investigated were: age, home language, retention history, SES, program of studies, suspensions, and GPA. Data were from a large urban school district in the state of Florida. A sample of 865 Hispanic/Latino male Latino students in the 8th grade in 1995-96 was followed longitudinally every year to the year 2000-01. Survival analysis and logistic regression were used to examine the data. The research questions were: 1) What is the relation between age, home language, retention history, SES, program of studies, suspensions, and GPA and dropping out of middle and secondary school by Hispanic/Latino males? 2) At what grade levels do the predictor variables begin to affect the male Hispanic/ Latino students' propensity for early school leaving? When are they at greatest risk? Of the predictor variables included in this research, age, retention history, program of studies, suspension, and GPA, were found to be statistically significant in the students' decision to drop out of school. This research also found that approximately 31% of this Hispanic/Latino male sample dropped out prior to completing their high school education during the 5-year span. Investigating the most hazardous time for dropping out of school, results suggested that for these students it is well into their secondary education, very close to when they would actually graduate, during their junior to senior years. It may be the time close to their eighteenth birthday that lets them legally choose to leave school that triggers this hazardous time period.

As first-generation, low-income, and neglected men, they face a series of disadvantages (Alfaro, Umaña-Taylor, Gonzales-Backen, Bámaca, & Zeiders, 2009). As a result, educating parents on how to help their children navigate the educational system is crucial to the student's success (Benmayor, 2002). The goal in the majority of limited educational research on Latino parent engagement is discovering the role of the Latino male in the dynamics of the family and how that affects his experience as a college student. Researchers hope to find out how to properly support Latino parents prior to their children attending college and how to support the Latino men during their college years in order to improve the retention rates in higher education. Statement of the Problem The purpose of this research was to look at how family support affects first-generation Latino males. Currently, first-generation Latinas are more likely to graduate from college (Saenz & Ponjuan, 2009) and only 39% of first-generation Latino men succeed in attaining a bachelor's degree (Saenz & Ponjuan, 2011). Overall, what role do Latino parents play in their students schooling that significantly more Latinas than Latinos are graduating from 4-year universities? The researcher collected data through an online survey sent to first-generation Latino males in the Educational Opportunity Equity Program offered by California State University, Sacramento. The sample for this study included 18 Latino men from the EOP program. EOP serves low-income, first-generation students and provides support for students who come into the university at a disadvantage. The researcher aimed to identify how the students perceived support from their families. Latino men are being swept under the rug now more than ever. At a young age, they are marginalized by a school system that reacts with punishment rather than understanding. Latino parents need to ensure they reach out to their child's school, and schools need to ensure parent outreach is accessible to low-income parents. As social and cultural capital rises for Latinos, Latino and Latina graduation rates will grow.

This study strives to offer insights concerning the questions: (a) what behavioral patterns of current family, peers, and conditions in school have influenced the educational decisions of these Mexican American males? and (b) what social conditions motivate these Mexican American males to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity? This qualitative research was also aimed at establishing and understanding how a selected number of Mexican American males have achieved academic success. The researcher chose 10 men with either an associate of arts or an associate of science degrees for an in-depth interview and used a semi-structured interview guide in an effort to prompt oral discourse. The interviewer posed questions concerning academic conditions, family impact, college environment, and financial issues. The responses to the questions led to similar themes involved in these students' course completion and graduation. The researcher used a theoretical framework using Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977) in which he suggests that not only environmental factors, but motivational factors along with self-regulatory mechanisms affect an individual's behavior. This research illustrated the conditions that facilitated reaching the participant's educational goal and mission, which was to complete a two-year degree at the community college. The inquiry examined the behavioral patterns that have been an influence on the educational decisions of these Mexican American males, and what social conditions have motivated them to seek and achieve higher education despite adversity.

Book excerpt: Abstract: After high school graduation, the majority of Latino males who decide to continue their education will do so via the community college. Many will have the familial encouragement, peer support, and aspirations to succeed with respect to their community college goal. However, many Latino male students are unsuccessful in their journey toward a community college certificate, associate's degree, or transfer to a university. The problem under investigation in this study was the achievement gap that Latino male students may experience in community colleges and the socioeconomic impact of this lack of educational opportunity. The purpose of this study was to explore the journey and experiences of 15 reentry Latino male community college students who achieved academic success after previously departing from the community college for a minimum of 1 year. Through ethnographic interview qualitative methodology, data were collected via 15 semistructured interviews of individuals who met the necessary criteria for this study. Findings suggested that Latino male students may not be informed or knowledgeable about higher education or possess the necessary navigational capital to excel at the community college. This study also revealed that Latino males may depart the community college in pursuit of employment opportunities to contribute to family expenses and to provide for themselves financially. Participants expressed that they returned to the community college to increase their career options and secure future employment with greater job security. Many participants expressed that a return to the community college was needed to fulfill a desire for a better life, to fulfill an original unaccomplished goal (educational and professional), or a new goal that was decided upon while away from the community college. Recommendations developed by this study included key partnerships among educational institutions geared toward major and career awareness, the importance of greater collaboration between the community college and partners in industry, and the role of work study for nontraditional student retention.

Six hypotheses were developed to answer six research questions. A quantitative research design was developed and executed. A total of 322 full-time Latino students were enrolled in the Fall 2001. Since OLLUSA had a ratio of 80/20 female/male, this study used stratified random sampling by selecting 50% of the total population in order to select proportionately equal representation of both male and female participants in this study. The sample size was 161 (50% of 322) of which 31 were male and 130 female students. The predictor variables were selected based on literature reviews. The selected predictor variables were gender, SAT score, remedial Math, remedial English, Fall GPA, and first-generation college were used as independent predictors while the dependent variable was retention. All the participants in this study were first year, first time, full-time and degree-seeking students who enrolled in the fall semester of 2001.
