Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frontiers in Psychology is introducing a new research topic, Pedagogical Psychology: Beyond the 21st Century, which will be released as an online journal issue in summer 2014. The purpose of Beyond the 21st Century will be to publish goal- oriented articles leading to improvement of teaching and learning at all levels of psychology education. Until perhaps 20 years ago, educational approaches to teaching were largely informed by a “Stand and Deliver” pedagogical attitude. The psychology of this approach has often invested unrealistic and unrealizable responsibilities in both teachers and students. With the emergence of electronic data sharing (e.g., the Internet) and global cooperation/competition, newer approaches to teaching have begun to supplement and sometimes replace the older model of teaching. These newer approaches have simultaneously taken advantage of technological advances, global changes, and an evolving understanding of successful student-mentor relationships. As the pedagogical models driven by these changes evolve into the 22nd century and beyond, what seems groundbreaking today will, in hindsight, be seen as hidebound. Thus, the major goal of Beyond the 21st Century will be to publish manuscripts which imaginatively, but realistically anticipate future trends in teaching undergraduate psychology. Types of manuscripts which are appropriate for Pedagogical Psychology should be visionary, yet empirically and/or theoretically based. We welcome manuscripts in all domains of pedagogical psychology, with a special interest on topics that are new, or expected to evolve rapidly. Such innovative topics include, but are not limited to: Online and hybrid teaching; Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). How has student success improved with the introduction of online/distance education? Are there dangers associated with online/distance education, especially MOOCS? How can student success be improved as technology evolves beyond the MOOC concept? What technological advances will make psychology education available and useful for more, and more diverse students? How can the physical classroom be transformed into a student centered, effective, virtual environment? Using the internet as resources for classes (e.g., stat tutorials, etc.) Uses of technology, such as social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter), wikis, and clickers in the classroom The challenge of teaching particular courses online, such as psychology laboratory courses or practicums Seeking effective user feedback (i.e., regarding user friendliness, teaching effectiveness) for online courses, including MOOCs The Wikipedia initiative of the Association for Psychological Science Teaching “Generation Me;” anticipating changing generational needs Teaching international students Teaching non-traditional-age students Undergraduate research projects Integrating multiculturalism into all courses Infusing social justice issues into psychology courses Creating opportunities for interdisciplinary learning Teaching techniques for psychology courses which are often offered as electives rather than core curriculum (e.g., evolutionary psychology, psychology and the law, cross-cultural psychology, health psychology, positive psychology) Assessing institutional student learning objectives across the curriculum Contingent faculty/adjunct faculty/lecturers in psychology departments Working with changing legislative & accreditation constraints and unpredictable budgets Co-Hosts of Pedagog

Book excerpt: This quantitative causal comparative research study, guided by Herzberg's (1964) Two Factor Theory of Motivation, and conducted with 106 online adjunct faculty members teaching at a community college in a Southeastern state, examined the effects of four types of professional development (PD) training for online instruction (i.e., fully online, fully face-to-face, blended [online and face-to-face], and none) on online adjunct faculty members' levels of motivation and hygiene job satisfaction. Data were analyzed using two one-way MANCOVAs. The first one-way MANCOVA addressed the first research question, which inquired if there were significant differences across online instruction PD training groups on the motivation job satisfaction factors of general job satisfaction, recognition, and autonomy, controlling for online instruction self-efficacy and age. The second one-way MANCOVA addressed the second research question, which queried if there were significant differences across PD training groups on the hygiene job satisfaction factors of faculty support, salary, and teaching schedule, controlling for online instruction self-efficacy. Results from the first one-way MANCOVA showed that participants in the four online instruction PD training groups did not have significantly different levels of general job satisfaction, recognition and autonomy. Results from the second one-way MANCOVA were significant. Participants in the entirely online PD training group had a significantly lower mean faculty support score than did participants in the blended PD training group. Participants who had not received PD training for online instruction had a significantly lower mean teaching schedule score than did participants in the other three PD training groups.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, multiple regression study was to examine the relationship between 10 adjunct instructor characteristics and organizational commitment and job satisfaction. Part-time instructors who taught for the institution during the 2012-2013 academic year completed an electronic survey with questions from three valid and reliable instruments: perceived person-organization fit (Cable & DeRue, 2002), part-time faculty job satisfaction survey (Hoyt, Howell, & Eggett, 2007), and organizational commitment questionnaire (Fields, 2002). Data from the survey was analyzed using separate hierarchical regressions to answer the following research questions: (a) Do adjunct instructor characteristics (age, gender, ethnicity, education level, teaching experience, teaching discipline, outside work status, teaching load, and teaching modality [online vs. on site], discipline), and perceived fit predict job satisfaction? (b) Do any of these same adjunct instructor characteristics and perceived fit predict organizational commitment? Results indicated that the fourth block of variables (overall model) was statistically significant for both job satisfaction and organizational commitment and explained 43.1% of the variability in job satisfaction and 58.1% of the variability in organizational commitment. The individual predictor variables of gender, education level (first professional), teaching modality (online and blended), and person-organization fit individually contributed to the overall variance of job satisfaction, whereas the predictor variables of age group, ethnicity, teaching modality (online) and person-organization fit individually contributed to the overall variance of organizational commitment.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between selected demographic and educational variables of faculty members employed in the Alabama Community College System and their impact on job satisfaction. The variables included in the study are the demographic variables of age, gender, ethnicity, salary, and degree status, along with the institutional variables of academic ability of students, advancement in technology, faculty workload, tenure, co-worker relationship, administrative governance and support, and professional growth opportunities. This study was conducted to educate college administrators regarding faculty morale and to provide a means of communication between administrators and faculty to address faculty concerns, thus leading to a more stable learning environment for students. A survey research design was used to collect and analyze the data from faculty members at 10 community colleges within the state of Alabama. An instrument designed by the researcher entitled the Howton Community College Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey was used to collect the data using SurveyGizmo.com. The instrument was validated by a panel of experts and a pilot study determined the reliability coefficient to be .786. The data were analyzed through the use of descriptive statistics, factoral analysis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The findings of the study indicated a four scale structure for the created instrument which consisted of the following components: 1) administrative support and its affect on the personal life of faculty members; 2) obtaining tenure and the evaluation process; 3) technology in the classroom and training through professional development activities; and 4) relationship among colleagues. Results from ANOVA show that there were no between or within group differences among mean scores with regard to age, sex, ethnicity, salary, tenure status, or degree status. Examining measures of central tendencies revealed that over 20% of faculty members responded negatively with regard to satisfaction in the areas of academic ability of students, administrative support, professional development opportunities, and advancements in technology. However, 87% of faculty members responded favorably regarding their overall job satisfaction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the job satisfaction levels of adjunct and full-time faculty at community colleges in Arkansas. The study used Herzberg's Motivation/Hygiene theory as a framework for understanding job satisfaction and factors that lead to job satisfaction/dissatisfaction. The study also examined the difference in overall job satisfaction between adjunct faculty and full-time faculty. The findings of this study support Herzberg's Motivation/Hygiene theory. Subsequent findings showed that adjuncts are generally more satisfied with their job than their full-time counterparts. The findings of the analyses also identified key components or factors that contribute to the overall job satisfaction of full-time and adjunct faculty members. The research findings should help education leaders to improve the working conditions for faculty at community colleges and help improve the overall job satisfaction of both groups.

Quantitative data were obtained and correlational analyses were used to test a model to study the relationships among the achievement of work values and organizational commitment and job satisfaction and to identify the moderating effects of the meaningfulness of work and responsibility for work on these relationships. Part-time faculty in the Faculty of Continuing Education of a community college were mailed a questionnaire on all the variables of the model. Several reliable, valid instruments were used to test the variables. Data analysis through Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple regression analyses revealed that the achievement of the work values of recognition and satisfaction with promotions did predict organizational commitment and job satisfaction, although the moderating effects of the meaningfulness of work and responsibility for work was not supported in this study. This study suggests that the revised model may be used for determining the relationships between the achievement of work values and organizational commitment and job satisfaction in a community college setting.
