Download or read book Handbook of Mass Measurement written by Frank E. Jones and published by Chapman and Hall/CRC. This book was released on 2002-03-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How much does it weigh?" seems a simple question. To scientists and engineers, however, the answer is far from simple, and determining the answer demands consideration of an almost overwhelming number of factors. With an intriguing blend of history, fundamentals, and technical details, the Handbook of Mass Measurement sets forth the details of achieving the highest precision in mass measurements. It covers the whole field, from the development, calibration, and maintenance of mass standards to detailed accounts of weighing designs, balances, and uncertainty. It addresses the entire measurement process and provides in-depth examinations of the various factors that introduce error. Much of the material is the authors' own work and some of it is published here for the first time. Jones and Schoonover are both highly regarded veterans of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. With this handbook, they have provided a service and resource vital to anyone involved not only in the determination of mass, but also to the entire field of precision measurement.

Book Synopsis Fission and Properties of Neutron-Rich Nuclei - Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference by :
Download or read book Fission and Properties of Neutron-Rich Nuclei - Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference written by and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings are the fourth in the series of International Conferences covering fission and properties of neutron-rich nuclei, which are at the forefront of nuclear structure research. The time interval of 5 years between each conference allows for significant new results to be achieved. Recently, world leaders in theory and experiments in research and the development of new facilities for research presented their latest results in areas such as synthesis of superheavy elements, new facilities for and recent results with radioactive ion beams, structure of neutron-rich nuclei, nuclear fission process, fission yields and nuclear astrophysics. This book is a major source of the latest research in these areas and plans for the future. The conference brought together a unique group of over 100 speakers including the directors of the major nuclear laboratories in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia and the US along with leading research scientists from around the world.

Book excerpt: 'The editors make a good point in claiming the time has come to upgrade the Standard Model into the ‘Standard Theory’ of particle physics, and I think this book deserves a place in the bookshelves of a broad community, from the scientists and engineers who contributed to the progress of high-energy physics to younger physicists, eager to learn and enjoy the corresponding inside stories.'Carlos LourençoCERN CourierThe book gives a quite complete and up-to-date picture of the Standard Theory with an historical perspective, with a collection of articles written by some of the protagonists of present particle physics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Physiaians have aZways known, though often they are reZuatant to adrrrit it, that the quaZity of their daiZy praatiae depends on the resuZts of researah - Irvine H. Page * The 1985 App1ied Basic Science Course distinguished itse1f for three impor tant reasons. First, it showed c1ear1y the extent to which biotechnology and biomechanics have become an integral part of orthopedics. Second, it emphasized the increasingly important role the orthopedist will have to play in the treatment of the aging population. Projected Canadian statistics estimate that the population aged 65 years and older will in crease from the current 9. 7% to 13% by the year 2000. Based on the current total population of almost 25 million, the number of hip fractures caused by age-related bone 1055 will almost double and will reach approximately 28,000 per year in Canada. Extrapolation of these figures according to populations in other countries is easy. The costs in expenditures and human suffering are inestimable. This is an area where orthopedic research will have to redouble its efforts in the hope of finding better preventive measures. Furthermore, knowledge of the pathogenetic mechanisms of bone 1055 becomes increasingly important in osteoporosis associated with weightlessness. The third impressive insight we derived from the presentations at this sym posium was the revelations of the latest imaging techniques and monitoring devices. Nuclear medicine, computer assisted tomography, and nuclear magnetic resonance are being applied to bone disease.
Book Synopsis Measurement Philosophy of the Pilot Program for Mass Calibration by : Paul E. Pontius
Download or read book Measurement Philosophy of the Pilot Program for Mass Calibration written by Paul E. Pontius and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pilot Program for mass measurement is the result of a consideration in which the values produced are thought of as the products of a mass measurement process. The collective performance of elements of the mass measurement process results in establishing the process precision which, under certain conditions, can be described quantitatively by pertinent performance parameters. The uncertainty attached to the product of the process, the measured value, is computed from these parameters and reflects the total performance of the process rather than the immediate measurement which might have produced the value.Interpretations of uncertainty and surveillance tests are discussed. The Pilot Program in mass measurement, whereby suitable process performance parameters can be established for precise mass measurement processes in other facilities, is discussed.(Author).
