En 1766, il soutient à la Faculté de médecine de Vienne une thèse portant le titre : De l'influence des planètes sur le corps humain. Comme les planètes agissent les unes sur les autres, comme le soleil et la lune agissent sur notre atmosphère et sur nos mers, il concluait que ces grands corps agissent aussi sur les corps animés, particulièrement sur le système nerveux, moyennant un fluide très subtil qui pénètre tout. Et de même que, sous cette influence, il s'opère dans la mer un flux et un reflux, aussi dans les corps animés, il y a une tension et une rémission, des sortes de marées. Ce fluide subtil, l'agent général de tous ces changements, ressemble beaucoup par ses propriétés à l'aimant. En conséquence, il s'appellera Magnétisme animal. Après une pratique médicale basée sur ces principes, il soutint néanmoins que l'existence du magnétisme animal est distincte de l'aimant ainsi que de l'électricité. Mesmer est possesseur de cette vertu ou fluide magnétique qui aide à la guérison de diverses maladies. Mais Vienne n'était pas prête à accepter les idées troublantes de Mesmer et l'impératrice envoya l'ordre au médecin " de finir cette supercherie. " C'est en février 1778 qu'il décide de venir s'installer à Paris pour tenter de faire reconnaître ses découvertes devant les sociétés savantes de la capitale. C'est dans ce contexte qu'il publie son premier livre : Mémoire sur la découverte du magnétisme (1779). L'ouvrage présenté ici est une reproduction fac simile de l'édition originale du Mémoire de 1779 considéré comme l'œuvre fondatrice de Mesmer. II est précédé d'un historique sur la vie et l'œuvre de Mesmer jusqu'à son installation à Paris en 1778 et de la reproduction du premier ouvrage écrit sur Mesmer et le magnétisme animal par le philosophe Ernest Bersot (1816-1880) en 1853. Ce livre s'adresse aux psychologues et aux psychiatres mais aussi aux historiens et aux étudiants, intéressés par la question du magnétisme animal et de l'hypnose, et désireux de découvrir l'écrit fondateur de Mesmer.
