The devastating Colorado Big-Thompson Flood of 1976 is summarized. The Lawn Lake Flood of 1982 and its aftermath is discussed in detail. The 2013 Front Range Floods in Colorado are detailed with an emphasis on the area adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). The removal or repair of deteriorating historical dams in the Park following the Lawn Lake Flood, and the restoration of the natural lake ecosystems at these sites is discussed. The author describes his hikes to four of the restored lakes, and the interpretive efforts to educate the visitor about the Lawn Lake Flood at the site of the alluvial fan in Horseshoe Park. Finally, the author summarizes the visitor impacts on the Park with overcrowding, and the demands of a growing Front Range population on the water resources of the area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a lively history of three Rocky Mountain states in the twentieth century. With the sure hand of an experienced writer and the engaging voice of a veteran storyteller, the well-known historian Duane A. Smith recounts the major social, political, and economic events of the period with verve and zest. Smith is thoroughly familiar with his subject and has a genuine enthusiasm for the history of the region. Written with the general reader in mind, Rocky Mountain Heartland will appeal to students, teachers, and “armchair historians” of all ages. This is the colorful saga of how the Old West became the New West. Beginning at the end of the nineteenth century and concluding after the turn of the twenty-first, Rocky Mountain Heartland explains how Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming evolved over the course of the century. Smith is mindful of all the factors that propelled the region: mining, agriculture, water, immigration, tourism, technology, and two world wars. And he points out how the three states responded in varying ways to each of these forces. Although this is a regional story, Smith never loses sight of the national events that influenced events in the region. As Smith skillfully shows, the vast natural resources of the three states attracted optimistic, hopeful Americans intent on getting rich, enjoying the outdoors, or creating new lives for themselves and their families. How they resolved these often-conflicting goals is the modern story of the Rocky Mountain region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intentional Leadership: Becoming a Trustworthy Leader clearly explains the ways leaders can build trust in three stages of their career: as an individual contributor, as a team member, and as a leader of an organization. Through profiling a trustworthy leader, Bob Lintz, and his career at General Motors, this text illustrates how leaders can be intentional in leading themselves, their teams, and their organizations by building the ROCC of Trust (be reliable, open and honest, competent, and compassionate). The authors also feature other authentic leaders to demonstrate how to build trust along your leadership journey. Some noteworthy differences from this book’s first edition include: Revised from the first edition with more than 80% new material to help leaders at all ages and all stages build trust and move from an individual contributor to an organizational leader Each chapter is structured around the career of Bob Lintz, who successfully turned around a failing GM plant in the suburb of Cleveland. He now serves The Cleveland Clinic's Board of Trustees where he is applying the lessons learned from this turnaround Each chapter also contains the experience and wisdom of other trustworthy leaders from a variety of backgrounds, ethnicities, and economic sectors: this will inspire other leaders to build trust intentionally and authentically An accessible and informative tone, with a focus on research and anecdotes, to create a cohesive guidebook for leaders Intentional Leadership is suitable for new as well as experienced leaders who want to learn more about how to build trust with employees and other stakeholders, and who want to be intentional in the way they lead others.
