Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the emotional and physical labor necessary to work nights as a pizza delivery driver and days as a high school English teacher. Teacher/Pizza Guy is a collection of autobiographical poems from the 2016–17 school year in which Jeff Kass worked as a full-time English teacher and a part-time director for a literary arts organization and still had to supplement his income by delivering pizzas a few nights a week. In the collection, Kass is unapologetically political without distracting from the poems themselves but rather adds layers and nuances to the fight for the middle class and for educators as a profession. The timing of this book is beyond relevant. As a public high school teacher in America, Kass's situation is not uncommon. In September 2018, Time published an article detailing how many public school teachers across the country and in a variety of environments work multiple jobs to help make ends meet. Teacher/Pizza Guy chronicles Kass's experience of teaching, directing, feeding people, and treading the delicate balance of holding himself accountable to his wife and kids, his students, his customers, and his own mental and physical health while working three jobs in contemporary America. The journey of that year was draining, at times daunting, at times satisfying, but always surprising. Many of the ideas for these poems were initially scribbled onto the backs of pizza receipts or scratched out during precious free moments amidst the chaos of the school day. A driving force behind the book is Philip Levine's poem "What Work Is," which Kass believes attempts to examine not only the dignity and complexity of what we think physical, tangible work is but also the exhausting, albeit sometimes fulfilling nature of emotional work. Teacher/Pizza Guy is a funny and relatable collection for readers, thinkers, educators, and pizza lovers everywhere.

Book excerpt: Most teacher manuals talk about what teachers need to do. That's useful enough, especially for new teachers. But no list, however long, can anticipate every circumstance, and in teaching unusual circumstances are an integral part of everyday life. But how do experienced teachers know what to do? Successful teachers develop a Teaching Character; they've worked on the qualities and personality traits that they need in order to cope successfully with the full spectrum of situations that being a teacher can involve. Veterans don't ask themselves, 'What does the teaching guide book tell me?' when confronted with difficult situations - they react instinctively, based on the character skills they've developed over time. Unfortunately, for most people this process of learning is unguided, and unconscious. It's time for a self-help manual that actually helps. This book includes case studies and anecdotes, chapter summaries and humorous illustrations to help teachers reflect on what it means to be a teacher, and why it is the most rewarding profession there is.

The events themselves are reconstructed in the book through teacher and pupil voices and through documentation. A model of ‘critical event’ is derived from the study, which might serve as a possible framework for understanding other such occurrences in schools.

Book excerpt: This book address a major gap in the current mentoring programs at the secondary level. Staff development resources are often concentrated on helping new teachers be successful in their early school experience. Yes, a good idea, but a limited vision. Meanwhile many veteran teachers go without the mentoring assistance they need to be effective classroom teachers. While a few become mentors themselves, many veteran teachers just settle, slowly giving up, and become at risk of failure, burnout, and thinking only of retirement. This book is a call to school superintendents, building administrators, department chairs, school board members, union leaders, parent leaders, and teacher educators to address the need to provide ongoing mentoring for all teachers.

The Challenges and Opportunities of Diversity in the Classroom offers a comparative perspective on the pedagogical and cultural issues in managing differences and diversity in the classroom. Using reflections and experiential analysis, the volume presents perspectives on the experiences of teaching and learning through differences of race/ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation and gender, language, special needs and geography, from contexts such as the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Israel. The reflections are presented from the viewpoint of minority teaching professionals and white educators teaching diverse student populations ranging from K-12 to college students and pre-service teachers. This volume provides a lens into the questions, reflections, and experiences of teachers and practitioners when they encounter difference in the classroom. The essays highlight the trepidation and frustration educators feel when they perceive themselves to be ill-prepared for diversity in their classrooms. However, there are also essays of triumph and success when teachers feel they have reached their students in a meaningful way. Additionally, through the experiences depicted, teachers describe their processes of connecting to students, how they determined what worked and did not work in their journey, and what they learned from the experience that continues to impact them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book clearly written by an educator who knows mindfulness in schools from the inside. The strongest evidence for this is that Hawkins never gets carried away. He recognises that mindfulness is not a panacea, that to implement it successfully in schools is a slow and steady process, and that above all it must begin with the teachers themselves. But Hawkins also recognises how transformative mindfulness can be, having experienced it so profoundly himself as an educator in many different contexts. His anecdotes give it plenty of colour (my favourite is ‘Billy and the Mosquito’), whilst the practical guidance – Chapter 7 on implementation for example – makes it of tremendous practical value. - Richard Burnett, Co-founder and Director, Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP) Former school teacher turned mindfulness consultant Kevin Hawkins truly understands the joys of teaching and the desire to make a real difference in the lives of students, as well as the challenges and risks of burnout that most teachers experience on a daily basis. With this guide to mindful practice, teachers new and experienced can learn how to use mindfulness in their own professional and personal lives as well as how to incorporate it in their teaching to support student wellbeing. Combining theory with practice and illustrated with real life stories, this guide will show readers: what mindfulness is the research and scientific evidence behind it how changing the way you approach situations can transform the way you feel how to manage stress, and look after yourself how teaching mindfully can help your students what mindfulness can do for the culture in your school Packed full of DIY exercises, activities to use in the classroom and links to resources and further reading, this inspiring book will support experienced and new teachers to maintain a healthy work-life balance and thrive as a teaching professional.
