Book excerpt: Pastoral ministry is more challenging than ever with unique, complicated burdens and expectations some have not experienced in previous generations. Because of this, the number of pastors who start with a great zeal for the work, quickly crash and burn and are left with a battered faith and family. This book seeks to identify those unique challenges, diagnose the problem, propose a biblical solution, and then guide the pastor and his family to embrace these challenges while shepherding the family through them.

It reveals the good, and not so good, the bullying, including perceptions of casual observers. This book explores blunders, bloopers, as well as victories made by those Living in Glass Houses. Albeit, the adversary was defeated on the Cross of Calvary. To God Be the Glory! Yet, we must learn to appreciate Gods entire handiwork all humankind. As you read this book, you will discover that The Children of Those Who Serve [CoTWS] desire to be like you. Your position in life does not matter to God. What matters is for all of us to take the blinders off of our eyes and see that those Living in Glass Houses are people, too. As you peruse the pages of this book, some stories will make you laugh, cry and/or get angry. You will find yourself hanging on for the next line, filled with adventure and excitement depicting the road Children of Those Who Serve travel. These Children desire to be accepted. Thus, this book is written for the Children of The Reverend Clergy; as well as Public Servants, who have likewise dedicated their lives to the service of humanity and to you. This professional exemplary group silently serve among us; doing their jobs, as Ministers and/or Public Servants. These amazing Citizens willingly respond to human need, pain and suffering, any moment, for any happening, any time, often putting themselves at risk. Many who serve humanity come from humble beginnings, while others have plenty. Nonetheless, they give their lives to Ministry and caring for the needs of others on a daily basis. These extraordinary people are from all cultures, religions, economic status, etc. Collectively, they are recognized as The Reverend Clergy and/or Public Servants. The purpose for which this book was written is: To encourage The Children of Those Who Serve [CoTWS] while explaining their plight to others. All of these Children are tucked-in under an ageless giant alliance umbrella termed Preachers Kids and/or the Kids of Public Servants. We are indebted to all of them, religious and secular. Stop the bullying and accusations of them. Pain hurts, no matter whos crying. Children of Those Who Serve, be encouraged. We feel your pain. We offer all of you, an eternal: We Love You.

Book excerpt: This reflection, though brutally honest, provides insight to the conflicts that face the children of ministers, pastors, religious clergy, deacons, and church leaders. It challenges fellow Christians, to nurture the lives of these children without punishing judgements. This work provokes congregants and leaders to nurture preachers' kids, and provide heartfelt guidance and vigilant prayer. It encourages prayer- warriors, to guard over the hearts of your preachers' kids. The book leads the reader toward self-examination and self-correction, love and respect of oneself. The author makes a noteworhty disclaimer, 'I do not have a license in counseling, a degree in psychology or theology. I am not an elder or deacon in any church, nor do I hold office as a board member on any religious organization. I am not a minister, pastor or evangelist. I am neither an acclaimed author nor an authority of any kind. Forgive me if I have misquoted scripture or taken verses out of context. I hope the Bible verses I have quoted throughout this booklet would not seem preachy; but then again, I am a preacher's daughter-smile. I trust that, these scriptures will grab at your hearts and soothe your soul-wounds. I hope they will provide a new perspective and they would be as you have never heard them or thought of them before'. The author writes from a from a unique perspective that of a peracher's kid. 'I am the voice of a group that is easily misunderstood and even shunned. We are the group that, 'should know better'. Just being born into the subculture of 'preachers' kids' we are automatically judged by all, (the righteous and the unrighteous alike). We are 'expected to...' by default, 'be good, be upright, make no mistakes, be all things to all men all of the time. We are to be mature in all judgments from the moment of birth, and on and on it goes. Few can comprehend our journey toward our Father on a road less traveled'. This journey will be enlightening and comforting to all who read it. It will bring hope to those who are confused and lost. The book although empathetic to all parties, makes all accountable for their behaviors towards others and to the Heavenly Father. It is with great love and sensitivity that the author leads the reaader to finding relationship with Jesus. Just for a moment the reader can walk in the shoes of peachers' kids with understanding and empathy. It brings much-needed direction and guidance. The author attempts to bridge the gap between 'all of you' and 'preachers' kids. It also attempts to bridge the disonnect between preachers' kids and Jesus. This work is raw and honest as well as a relection of a lost generation who need to know the true power of redemption and the priceless gift of grace and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sometimes church is sad because from the outside looking in, things look good-people want to get inside. But from the inside, people want to get out. I think it has something to do with how people are treated after they get in. It's not God! It's definitely not God's fault. It's the people's fault: the church people!" It's time to face the fact: PK problems are everyone's problem. With Preachers' Kids: Abiding Under the Shadow, James Bailey gives you an unfiltered look into the troubling circumstances PKs live through simply because of who their parents are. What can really be done about dysfunction in the body of Christ? James Bailey breaks the dialogue wide open and not only tells his story, but also includes words directly from the mouths of many other PKs as they candidly share their life experiences. Instead of sitting back and accepting these serious issues as part of life in a sinful world, we can actively discuss the problems and each determine to do our part in carrying out solutions. If you are a PK, you will find support, solace and spiritual wisdom to handle the situations that often interfere in your personal relationship with Christ. If you are not a PK, you will have your eyes opened to what they experience. As one of their Christian siblings, you can make better choices about how you relate with the first family of your congregation. From every side there are positive changes in attitudes and behavior that can be accomplished through God's all-powerful love and grace. Read Preachers' Kids today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. A. Carson's father was a pioneering church-planter and pastor in Quebec. But still, an ordinary pastor-except that he ministered during the decades that brought French Canada from the brutal challenges of persecution and imprisonment for Baptist ministers to spectacular growth and revival in the 1970s. It is a story, and an era, that few in the English-speaking world know anything about. But through Tom Carson's journals and written prayers, and the narrative and historical background supplied by his son, readers will be given a firsthand account of not only this trying time in North American church history, but of one pastor's life and times, dreams and disappointments. With words that will ring true for every person who has devoted themselves to the Lord's work, this unique book serves to remind readers that though the sacrifices of serving God are great, the sweetness of living a faithful, obedient life is greater still.

Book excerpt: Although most evangelical traditions bar women from ordained ministry, many women have carved out unofficial positions of power in their husbands' spiritual empires or their own ministries. The biggest stars write bestselling books, grab high ratings on Christian television, and even preach. Bowler offers a sympathetic and revealing portrait of megachurch women celebrities, showing how they must balance the demands of celebrity culture and conservative, male-dominated faiths. And black celebrity preachers' wives carry a special burden of respectability. A compelling account of women's search for spiritual authority in the age of celebrity. -- adapted from jacket
