Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric Data Analysis (GDA) is the name suggested by P. Suppes (Stanford University) to designate the approach to Multivariate Statistics initiated by Benzécri as Correspondence Analysis, an approach that has become more and more used and appreciated over the years. This book presents the full formalization of GDA in terms of linear algebra - the most original and far-reaching consequential feature of the approach - and shows also how to integrate the standard statistical tools such as Analysis of Variance, including Bayesian methods. Chapter 9, Research Case Studies, is nearly a book in itself; it presents the methodology in action on three extensive applications, one for medicine, one from political science, and one from education (data borrowed from the Stanford computer-based Educational Program for Gifted Youth ). Thus the readership of the book concerns both mathematicians interested in the applications of mathematics, and researchers willing to master an exceptionally powerful approach of statistical data analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visualization and Verbalization of Data shows how correspondence analysis and related techniques enable the display of data in graphical form, which results in the verbalization of the structures in data. Renowned researchers in the field trace the history of these techniques and cover their current applications. The first part of the book explains the historical origins of correspondence analysis and associated methods. The second part concentrates on the contributions made by the school of Jean-Paul Benzécri and related movements, such as social space and geometric data analysis. Although these topics are viewed from a French perspective, the book makes them understandable to an international audience. Throughout the text, well-known experts illustrate the use of the methods in practice. Examples include the spatial visualization of multivariate data, cluster analysis in computer science, the transformation of a textual data set into numerical data, the use of quantitative and qualitative variables in multiple factor analysis, different possibilities of recoding data prior to visualization, and the application of duality diagram theory to the analysis of a contingency table.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric Data Analysis designates the approach of Multivariate Statistics that conceptualizes the set of observations as a Euclidean cloud of points. Combinatorial Inference in Geometric Data Analysis gives an overview of multidimensional statistical inference methods applicable to clouds of points that make no assumption on the process of generating data or distributions, and that are not based on random modelling but on permutation procedures recasting in a combinatorial framework. It focuses particularly on the comparison of a group of observations to a reference population (combinatorial test) or to a reference value of a location parameter (geometric test), and on problems of homogeneity, that is the comparison of several groups for two basic designs. These methods involve the use of combinatorial procedures to build a reference set in which we place the data. The chosen test statistics lead to original extensions, such as the geometric interpretation of the observed level, and the construction of a compatibility region. Features: Defines precisely the object under study in the context of multidimensional procedures, that is clouds of points Presents combinatorial tests and related computations with R and Coheris SPAD software Includes four original case studies to illustrate application of the tests Includes necessary mathematical background to ensure it is self–contained This book is suitable for researchers and students of multivariate statistics, as well as applied researchers of various scientific disciplines. It could be used for a specialized course taught at either master or PhD level.

Book excerpt: As with previous symposiums, the main objective of the Sixth International Symposium is to publish papers (of both technical and practical nature) to present new findings uncovered by theoretical results which may have the potential to contribute solutions to real-life problems. With this objective in mind, this collection of papers aims to serve as an interface between stochastic modeling and data analysis as well as their applications to the problems we face in the various fields. The papers first focused on the theory, application and interaction between stochastic models and data analysis. The results and their applications to the problems we face in the fields of economics, finance and insurance, management, marketing, health sciences, production and engineering are then explored.

Book excerpt: Text mining is an exciting application ?eld and an area of scienti?c - search that is currently under rapid development. It uses techniques from well-established scienti?c ?elds (e. g. data mining, machine learning, infor- tion retrieval, natural language processing, case-based reasoning, statistics and knowledge management) in an e?ort to help people gain insight, und- stand and interpret large quantities of (usually) semi-structured and unstr- tured data. Despite the advances made during the last few years, many issues remain unresolved. Proper co-ordination activities, dissemination of current trends and standardisation of the procedures have been identi?ed, as key needs. There are many questions still unanswered, especially to the potential users; what is the scope of Text Mining, who uses it and for what purpose, what constitutes the leading trends in the ?eld of Text Mining – especially in relation to IT – and whether there still remain areas to be covered. Knowledge Mining draws upon many of the key concepts of knowledge management, data mining and knowledge discovery, meta-analysis and data visualization. Within the context of scienti?c research, knowledge mining is principally concerned with the quantitative synthesis and visualization of - search results and ?ndings. The results of knowledge mining are increased scienti?c understanding along with improvements in research quality and value. Knowledge mining products can be used to highlight research opportunities, assist with the p- sentation of “best” scienti?c evidence, facilitate research portfolio mana- ment, as well as, facilitate policy setting and decision making.

Book excerpt: This monograph offers an original broad and very diverse exploration of the seriation domain in data analysis, together with building a specific relation to clustering. Relative to a data table crossing a set of objects and a set of descriptive attributes, the search for orders which correspond respectively to these two sets is formalized mathematically and statistically. State-of-the-art methods are created and compared with classical methods and a thorough understanding of the mutual relationships between these methods is clearly expressed. The authors distinguish two families of methods: Geometric representation methods Algorithmic and Combinatorial methods Original and accurate methods are provided in the framework for both families. Their basis and comparison is made on both theoretical and experimental levels. The experimental analysis is very varied and very comprehensive. Seriation in Combinatorial and Statistical Data Analysis has a unique character in the literature falling within the fields of Data Analysis, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery. It will be a valuable resource for students and researchers in the latter fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in a number of disciplines deal with large text sets requiring both text management and text analysis. Faced with a large amount of textual data collected in marketing surveys, literary investigations, historical archives and documentary data bases, these researchers require assistance with organizing, describing and comparing texts. Exploring Textual Data demonstrates how exploratory multivariate statistical methods such as correspondence analysis and cluster analysis can be used to help investigate, assimilate and evaluate textual data. The main text does not contain any strictly mathematical demonstrations, making it accessible to a large audience. This book is very user-friendly with proofs abstracted in the appendices. Full definitions of concepts, implementations of procedures and rules for reading and interpreting results are fully explored. A succession of examples is intended to allow the reader to appreciate the variety of actual and potential applications and the complementary processing methods. A glossary of terms is provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
