Book excerpt: In Plain Site is the first life-cycle biography of a Second World War air training facility in Canada. It begins by locating the Royal Air Force (RAF) station at Caron, Saskatchewan in the debates surrounding air training in Canada, the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and the UK’s plans to relocate its primary air training to Canada. It offers a detailed social and geographical history of the Caron site as well as the herculean efforts to acquire, erect, and continuously modify its facilities. Based on interviews as well as meticulous archival research in Canada and overseas, In Plain Site provides a comprehensive chronicle of Caron’s air training operations, after-hours activities, supporting agencies, and the struggles of its RAF personnel to make sense of the Canadian prairies. In Plain Site concludes with an account of the exemplary service rendered at Caron, the sudden termination of its operations, and its purchase by the Briercrest Bible Institute in 1946. In its final chapter, In Plain Site argues that what went on at Caron is reflective of a conceptual realignment that has had the effect of undermining the civilian–military distinction. Supplemented by numerous photos and extensive endnotes, In Plain Site offers a compendium of Canadian and Allied wartime achievements, all of which ought to be brought back into plain sight.
Book Synopsis A Hundred Acres of America by : Michael Hoberman
Download or read book A Hundred Acres of America written by Michael Hoberman and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Hundred Acres of America: The Geography of Jewish American Literary History, Michael Hoberman introduces cultural geography as an alternative approach to the immigrant model. Cultural geography allows Hoberman to restore Jewish American writers to their roles as important, active members of the American literary landscape from the 1850s to the present, and to argue that Jewish history, American literary history, and the inhabitation of American geography are, and always have been, contiguous entities. A Hundred Acres of America makes its case by investigating both canonical and extra-canonical literary depictions of six geographies: the frontier, the small town, the urban, the suburban, America as seen from Europe, and Israel as seen from America. Hoberman reads dozens of representative texts closely, and analyzes a wide range of authors, from frontier-era memoirists and turn-of-the-century native-born reformers to contemporary novelists. He adroitly demonstrates that Jewish American authors are not only present throughout American literary history, but actively shaped this history with writings that often subverted or contradicted the ways their non-Jewish peers depicted these geographies"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She was always the ‘perfect’ Star—until she fell… Jessa Star danced her way to the perfect ballet career, and when injury cut it short, she returned to Last Stand, Texas to open a dance studio—the perfect back-up plan. She’s convinced everyone she’s perfectly happy and perfectly fulfilled, and she’s confident the secret that could blow up her life is perfectly concealed—until her wildly imperfect bull-rider husband careens into town. Happy-go-lucky Caleb “Calamity” Ross may not be a top-tier rodeo cowboy, but he doesn’t mind. His life on the road is fun, free, and fast enough to outrun his toxic upbringing. But when a bad wreck at the Last Stand Rodeo puts him in the hospital, he wakes to find his runaway bride by his side—the one woman who might matter enough to stop him in his rambling tracks. Their marriage was a joke, but there’s nothing funny about their connection, or the threats they pose to each other’s futures. The clock is ticking on their wedding bells, and they’ll have to decide whether to say ‘I do’ again—or say goodbye.
