Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid-1920s the UFO had gone into a period of decline from which it never recovered. The promise of equality hoped for by UFWO members never materialized and the UFCC, once a key component in the development of an alternative vision, began to focus more on profits than on politics. In Ringing in the Common Love of Good Kerry Badgley explores both the rise and the fall of the UFO, focusing on the Ontario counties of Lambton, Simcoe, and Lanark. He challenges the liberal-capitalist interpretation that the movement was nothing more than a group of impatient Liberals, as well as the Marxist view that the UFO consisted of self-interested independent commodity producers. Badgley argues that as the UFO broke free from hegemonic forces it developed alternative economic, political, and social visions, but that it was these same forces, combined with internal struggles and a conservative leadership, that ultimately resulted in the decline of the movement as a vehicle for democratic change in Ontario.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved Earth is a history of the making of 'abstract spaces of modernity' in the setting of the Canadian prairies, particularly rural Saskatchewan, from 1869 to 1944. Rod Bantjes demonstrates how three interrelated projectsstate formation, agrarian class formation, and the transformation of the environmentwere conceived in spatial terms and employed competing visions of spatial possibility. Bantjes proposes that the prairies be thought of as a site of modernity, and makes a case for viewing prairie farmers as 'modernists' who not only embraced, but took an active role in the making of modernity. Indeed, many of the questions that excited the imaginations of prairie politicians and reformers are alive today: the ecological and social value of 'localization' in agricultural production; the potentials for 'community' maintained and linked by transportation and communications technologies; and the possibilities of democratic decentralization within large translocal networks. The first systematic treatment of the spatial dimensions of the colonization of the prairie west, Improved Earth is a unique and thorough study certain to provoke new debates about the way space and time are imagined.

Book excerpt: This book is an outgrowth of a conference that analyzed transformations in farming & farm communities and discussed what might be done to achieve a more socially responsible development. It contains papers that address the pace of change in work & rural society which has proceeded so rapidly that every new development appears to be a cross-roads in which something precious is in danger of being left behind, but something valuable may be gained by taking the right route. Topics of the papers include the importance of work, the family farm, community building, knowledge & skills in the farm community, coping with the farm crisis, land reform, short line railways, farm co-operatives, agricultural chemicals & agribusiness, sustainable alternatives for agriculture, game farming, co-operative intervention in the farm machinery sector, conservation tillage, globalization & agricultural policy, agrarian radicalism on the prairies, and farm income support systems. Includes index.
