Book excerpt: Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) repairs on concrete structures have become popular, but their long-term durability remains in question. The objective of this research project is to investigate the efficiency, practicality, and capability of non-destructive testing in assessing the durability of FRP repairs applied on concrete bridges that have been in service for some years. Three bridges were chosen as the best available case studies: (1) the Safe Bridge with sprayed FRP in British Columbia, (2) the St-Étienne-de-Bolton Bridge with four different FRP wrap products in Quebec, and (3) the Leslie Street Bridge with wrap carbon fiber reinforced polymer in Ontario. These structures represent a wide variation in severity of environmental exposure, length of time in service, type of strengthening, and type of FRP product. They also encompass flexural and shear strengthening of beams and strengthening of columns. Two non-destructive evaluation techniques, active infrared thermography and impact-echo, were chosen as the most suitable methods of bond evaluation. The results of these non-destructive techniques were compared with the actual bond strength for accuracy and consistency. To measure the actual integrity of the bond, direct mechanical pull-off tests were performed as a complementary semi-destructive method. Initial indications are that infrared thermography enables investigation of vast areas in a reasonably time-efficient manner and provides reliable qualitative results. Impact-echo is found to be ineffective in evaluating the FRP bond, as the method is incapable of assaying the material close to the impact surface. The direct mechanical pull-off test was found to be relatively accurate in providing quantitative results in environmentally mild testing conditions. Use of the direct mechanical pull-off test, in a small sample, as substantiation of the infrared thermography, significantly increases the reliability of the non-destructive technique. In general, infrared.

Book excerpt: Over the years, Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites have gained popularity in transportation infrastructure as a material able to restore and increase the capacity of existing concrete elements. Properties such as a high strength to weight ratio, non-corrosive nature, durability, and high malleability make FRP materials an appealing alternative in the reinforcement of these structural elements. However, there are still concerns regarding the long-term performance of these repairs. Numerous studies have been completed by means of accelerated aging in the lab. However, behavior of these materials under realistic field conditions has yet to be thoroughly researched. As a result, this project was created to assess the durability of an FRP repair in the Castlewood Canyon Bridge in Colorado. In addition, a laboratory study was conducted to determine the long-term behavior of concrete reinforced with FRP when exposed to various environmental conditions. The specific tasks in this project include data collection and testing plans for field assessment, on-site testing and sample collection, laboratory testing and data analysis, and testing program with a focus on the effects of deicers on FRP. A literature review was developed to consider other concerns that the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) engineers may have on the subject.

Book excerpt: The long-term bond performance, 15+ years, of FRP-structural systems applied to reinforced-concrete structures is largely unknown and not widely tested. FRP-structural system performance is a function of FRP-concrete bond condition and is subject to deterioration over time. The purpose of this investigation is to test and validate the non-destructive testing impulse-excitation technique to evaluate bond condition of FRP systems applied to concrete structures, in particular concrete highway bridges. The objective is to identify changes in the FRP-concrete bond state by analyzing changes in impulse excitation (impact) frequencies and sinusoid waveforms. Hammer impact tests were performed on two FRP-retrofitted highway bridges in Missouri and a bonded FRP test plate in the laboratory. Signal analysis of recorded impact acoustic emissions was performed on frequencies and waveform damping ratios of bonded and de-bonded FRP material on two bridges and in the lab. The frequencies and sinusoidal waveforms of the bonded and de-bonded FRP material on the bridges had a high degree of correlation to those of the bonded/de-bonded laboratory FRP plate. This investigation confirms the impulse excitation technique to test FRP bond on concrete structures, which provides accurate data on the bonded versus de-bonded FRP-bond condition.

Book excerpt: Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) is a newly developed composite type of material which have many advantages over conventional materials (concrete and steel) like light weight, non-corrosive nature, design flexibility and quick installation. Due to its superior thermo-mechanical properties, it has emerged as one of the best economical method to strengthen and repair reinforced concrete bridges that were damaged each year due to various reasons like structural deterioration over time, fire accidents, corrosion of steel reinforcement and over height vehicle collision. This research aims to evaluate the long term performance of FRP strengthened bridge components with the help of Pull-Off tests. It will also recommend certain guidelines to be followed during the time of repair for the better performance of FRP. In this study a total of eight concrete bridges in the DFW area, that were damaged in the past and strengthened using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) wrap were identified and later Pull-Off tests were performed on selected test locations of the bridge components as per the specifications of ASTM D7522/D7522M (2009) .After evaluation of the Pull-Off test results it was determined that the overall performance of FRP is good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for safe, effective, and efficient methods to strengthen and upgrade our nation's infrastructures is clear. Strengthening Reinforced Concrete (RC) members using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites through external bonding has emerged as a viable technique to retrofit/repair deteriorated infrastructures. The interface between the FRP and concrete plays a critical role in this technique. This study proposes a life-cycle analytical framework on the integrity and long-term durability of the FRP-concrete interface through a combined analytical, numerical, and experimental approach. A novel three-parameter elastic foundation model (3PEF) is first established to provide a general tool to analyze and evaluate the design of the FRP strengthening system. This model correctly predicts the location where debonding can occur. To simulate the interface stress redistribution and creep deformations accumulated during service life due to the strong time dependent features of the adhesive layer, linear viscoelastic analytical solutions are then developed for the FRP-strengthened RC beams. Small cracks usually exist within the FRP-concrete interface, making fracture mechanics a more appropriate tool to evaluate the integrity of the FRP-concrete interface. Analytical solutions of energy release rate (ERR) and its phase angle at the tip of a crack along the FRP-concrete interface are obtained. Under the synergistic effects of the service loads and environments species, these small cracks can grow slowly even if the ERR at the crack tip is lower than the critical value. This slow-crack growth process is known as environment-assisted subcritical cracking. A series of subcritical cracking testing are conducted using a wedge-driven testing to gain the ability to accurately predict the long-term durability of the FRP-concrete interface. It has been found that water, deicing salt and alkaline solutions can substantially reduce the ERR at the crack tip needed to drive the subcritical crack growth along the epoxy-concrete interface. Once the small cracks grow to the critical length, critical debonding will occur, leading to the premature failure of the structure. A nonlinear fracture mechanics model using a Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) is finally developed to simulate this final failure phase of the FRP-concrete interface.

This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deck is among the most expensive components of a bridge over its lifetime because of the frequent and costly maintenance and rehabilitation required. Currently, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) performs visual inspections of a bridge deck as the principal means of determining its condition, which enables the inspector to definitively document the surface condition while the unseen condition below the deck surface is left to the inspector's expert judgement. To compensate for this lack of data, INDOT supplements visual inspections with programmatic scheduling for major work actions, which is very effective for INDOT but costly. In this continuing era of funding shortfalls, INDOT commissioned this study to investigate nondestructive testing (NDT) methods to fill their data gap to inform its work action decision. The NDT methods have been shown to accurately locate corrosion and delamination and are a cost-effective alternative. A project level comparison between the NDT methods was performed to show which method, as well as which combination of methods, were the best choices from a cost perspective. A project level analysis of 30 bridge decks was performed, and those costs were compared to the costs of the current INDOT programmatic schedules. Finally, the analysis was expanded to the network level, which included the entire bridge inventory in Indiana. The results of this study indicate that implementing the NDT methods is cost-effective for INDOT at both the project and network levels.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) composites have emerged as one the foremost structural materials in retrofit/rehabilitation of concrete structural members in last decades. The long-term durability of the FRP-to-concrete interface in aggressive environments places a critical role in the success of this technique. A comprehensive program using both the analytical and experimental approaches has been carried out in this study to examine the integrity and long-term durability of the FRP-to-concrete interface in presence of aggressive environments. Novel analytical solutions based on three-parameter elastic/viscoelastic foundation models have been developed for adhesively bonded joints first in this study to gain better understanding of stress transfer through FRP-to-concrete interface. These models overcome drawbacks in existing models by satisfying all boundary conditions and producing different peel stress distributions along two adhesive-adherend interfaces, making it possible to accurately predict the location of debonding initiation. These models have been verified with finite element analysis and experimental observations. Comprehensive experimental programs have been carried out to evaluate the deterioration of the FRP-to-concrete induced by moisture. In the first part, a novel environment-assisted subcritical debonding method using a wedge driving test has been proposed to examine the synergistic effect of the mechanical loads and environmental conditions on the deterioration of the FRP-to concrete interface. The deterioration of the interface induced by water has also been evaluated through measuring the residual fracture toughness of the FRP-to-concrete interface conditioned in water through two different ways. It has been found that conditioning method can have significant effect on the testing results. A novel wedge-split test has been proposed and carried out to directly measure the traction-separation law of the epoxy-concrete interfaces under mode I loading, which is not available in the literature. The potential of using silane coupling agent to improve the durability of the FRP-to-concrete interface has also been examined in the experimental program. Testing results confirm that the residual fracture toughness of the FRP-to-concrete interface attacked by moisture can be significantly increased by silane treatment.
