The preparations have all been carefully revised, some of the former ones omitted and many new ones introduced. The chief additions are the introductory chapters on organic analysis and molecular weight determinations, and an extension of the appendix. The book does not aim at being a complete laboratory guide, but is intended to provide a systematic course of practical in struction, illustrating a great variety of reactions and processes with a very moderate outlay in materials and apparatus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Identification of Organic Compounds IN teaching practical organic chemistry we have found the want of a convenient text-book dealing with the identification of simple organic compounds, such as is required by students working for the Inter mediate and Final (branch d) Examinations of the Institute of Chemistry. Moreover, many of the reactions and physical constants are not easily acces sible, but are only to be obtained by a diligent and Often tedious search through some of the larger books of reference. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Owens College Course of Practical Organic Chemistry We have much pleasure in recommending this little book to the notice of advanced students of chemistry. Any course of Practical Organic Chemistry leading up to original work in this branch of the science, must mainly consist in the careful preparation of a well-selected series of organic compounds. Dr. Julius Cohen has in the following pages collected such a series, and we feel confident that this work, filling, as it does, a lacuna in our English chemical literature, will prove most useful alike to the Professors, Demonstrators, and Students of our science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Chemistry: Inorganic and Organic This small work on qualitative analysis is intended to supply a text-book for students working according to the syllabus of the elementary stage of Practical Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. The substances for which tests are given are those contained in the new syllabus (1894), but it is hoped that the methods given for their detection and separation are such that the student will have nothing to unlearn when he proceeds to a more advanced course of qualitative analysis. Directions are given in the making up of reagents for students who are working without the aid of a teacher. Objection may be taken by some to the way in which it is recommended that results should be stated, but the authors find after several years practical experience in laboratory teaching, that this method leads to clearness of expression, and the rapid examination of a student's work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Organic Chemistry IN several respects this book is somewhat different from similar ones which are in general use at the present time. It is a combina tion of textbook and laboratory manual in which the theoretical discussions and the laboratory experiments are blended together. This arrangement encourages the student to consult the text while he is doing the experiments in the laboratory, with the result that he is more likely to perceive clearly the relation between the theory and the practice. In most physiological chemistry laboratories the strengths Of the reagents employed are very various, e.g. Dilute acetic acid may be I per cent, or 2 per cent., or 5 per cent, or even IO per cent. In order that all workers may employ a reagent of standard concentration, a list Of reagents has been carefully drawn up and is appended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Work in Organic Chemistry The object of this little book is to meet a want which the author has experienced in teaching the rudiments of Practical Organic Chemistry to students who can devote but little time to the subject. The subject matter of the following "Programmes of Work" has been chosen partly on account of its technical utility, and partly as affording practice in the application of the more important reagents employed in the investigation of the compounds of carbon. The writer wishes it to be expressly understood that the book is only intended to be a laboratory guide, and its use should be supplemented by reference to standard works, or still better by personal instruction from the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Chemistry for Engineering Students Much of the work in this book is quantitative, and the student is encouraged throughout, to check the quality of his work by weighing the materials used, and the products into which these materials may be converted. For these weighings the balance is made use of, and its importance in chemical work demands a few explanatory remarks concerning the principle on which it works and the manner Of using it. The mechanical principles underlying the construction of the balance cannot be discussed here in full, and the worker is referred to text-books on physics for a detailed description of a delicate balance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Organic Chemistry The experiments are, in general, the usual ones found in laboratory manuals, changed of course in accordance with our experience, and they were chosen for their teaching value and for the good all-round practical manipulation involved. There are only a few innovations. Menthone and menthone oxime illustrate typical reactions even though their formulas may seem large to the beginner. Glycocoll is prepared by hydrolysis, thus linking up the chemistry of the proteins with that of simpler compounds. Limonene dihydrochloride has tremendous teaching value and the synthesis of camphor from pinene gives an opportunity for select work in an enticing field. The methods described give good yields in most cases, but the yield was not the prime reason for choosing any experiment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class-Book of Organic Chemistry This little volume has been written as an introduction to 'organic chemistry for the use of first year medical students and for senior science students in schools. By treating the theoretical and practical sides of the subject concurrently, it is intended that the book may serve the double purpose of text-book and laboratory manual. It is divided into three parts. In the first part the general principles underlying determinations of purity, empiric and molecular formulae and structure, are explained and illustrated by a careful study of two of the most familiar and most easily procurable organic substances, viz., methyl and ethyl alcohols. In the second part, the aliphatic compounds are described in a more systematic fashion and the third part is devoted to a brief account of the more important members of the aromatic series. It is hoped that the book will fill a gap and serve the purpose for which it was written. I wish to acknowledge the valuable help I have received from Mr. A. T. Simmons in the correction of the proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiological Chemistry This book was originally compiled as a handbook for prae tical work in Physiological Chemistry at University College, London, since no single text or class book covered the complete course, or treated Physiological Chemistry as part of the subject of Organic Chemistry, or even as an in dependent subject. The present book must still be regarded mainly as a compilation. It represents an attempt to give to the worker a nearly complete statement of the whole subject. Each section has a short explanatory summary of the essential points, so as to connect the various sections together. The essential points are illustrated by the practical experiments, which are printed in different type. The illustrations are also compiled from various sources. These are mentioned underneath each figure. The illustra tions of apparatus not so mentioned have been drawn from my own sketches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Organic Chemistry IN the writing of text-books of Organic Chemistry there are two distinct and incompatible systems. In the one, it is the practical aspect of the science which is kept in chief view in the other, its symmetry and homogeneity. The one constantly directs attention to detail the other approaches the subject with the desire of displaying its orderly principles and structural unity. The present writer adheres with conviction to the latter method. The reader of text-books based upon the practical point of view is apt, if he be a beginner, to lose the thread of the argument in the wealth of facts for the mass of information necessary for the proper comprehension of the main principles of organic chemistry is so great, that additional details hinder rather than assist the student in his laborious task of assimilation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Organic Chemistry: A Book Designed Especially for the General Student The present edition represents a thorough revision of the text in which, however, the original point of View has been strictly retained. The attempt has been made to have all statements accord strictly with the results of the latest and most reliable investigations, and the opportunity has been taken to introduce several topics of practical interest which had hitherto been omitted. Among these may be mentioned citric acid, the fulminates, the synthesis of india-rubber, and the chemistry of tannin. The chapter devoted to the com pounds of cyanogen has been brought more nearly in accord with modern technical practice, and that dealing with stereoisomerism has been largely rewritten in the interest of clearness. The author desires to express his thanks to all those who have called attention to inaccuracies or loose statements in the first edition, and hopes that he may rely upon them for similar favors in the future. He is especially indebted to his colleague, Professor W. T. Hall, for valuable assistance in reading the proofs.
