Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis "Practical Studies in Sentence Analysis" is a revision and an enlargement of the author's former work, entitled "A Study of the English Sentence," which was published in 1895. In this work was printed for the first time a new method of written (visual) sentence analysis, designed as a substitute for the defective "diagram system" then in vogue. Since that time the writer has taught his scheme of combined oral and written analysis of the English sentence to many classes of pupils and teachers, who have voluntarily given personal testimony to its practical value. The memory of these words of commendation has furnished, for the most part, the author's main motive for organizing in a textbook the results of his past experiences in studying and teaching the functional elements of the English sentence. In no sense is this work to be regarded as a substitute for a textbook on English Grammar, but rather as a supplement to almost any grammar that would serve as a reference book for rules, principles, and definitions. It must be acknowledged that much of the teaching of English grammar has had to do with the recognition and classification of the Parts of Speech, and that no sufficient attention has been given to the classification of unit elements according to their special functions. The importance of sentence analysis has been noted by the New York Board of Regents in an "English Syllabus" in the following terms: "To help the pupil to develop the 'sentence sense' and to grasp the thought of difficult sentences, much of the time given to the study of grammar should be spent in the analysis of sentences just within the limit of his mental ability, such analysis consisting of rapid drill in syntax of words, phrases, and clauses." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sentences and Thinking: A Practice Book in Sentence Making I. What the sentence is. The sentence, as the thought unit, is the starting-point for the study of composition. It should be regarded, at the outset, not as the result of a mechanical manipulation of grammatical elements, but as an organism, an organic whole, reproducing in words a thought in the mind, as a-photograph reproduces a scene. It is always our first concern to see the thought clearlyfto get it clearly focused in our minds; to this everything else is secondary, - the grammar, the parts of speech, the syntax that are so often the bugbear of the student because they are approached wrongly. In the discussion that follows, we shall look first to the thought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is denied that Grammar should be a discussion of only the forms of language. To ignore meanings and relations of meanings as expressed by language forms is to rob this most useful branch of all but the most absolutely voluntary interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sentences and Their Elements IN the main this book aims to give, as briefly as possible, the facts which the student in college needs as a foundation for his study of language. Many enter without this elementary knowl edge and areas a result, seriously crippled in their classes in foreign languages as well as in their use of English. The text books used in preparatory schools give dogmatically rules of good use, but the student in college, who should think as well as remember and obey, needs a somewhat different treatment. The grammars and rhetorics used in college generally assume more effective knowledge of the elementary facts of language than the great majority in the classes actually possess. For this reason the following chapters deal with things which should have been learned in the grammar grades or in the first years in the high school, but according to a method which seems better adapted to the student who is more mature and who is studying other languages as well as his native tongue.* Some suggestions as to good use are also given, but since that subject is well treated in many standard text-books, it will be considered here only when it throws important light on the fundamental facts of language. The method of sentence study which has been adopted here may be seen from the following outline. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary new series fills a void in practitioner development and well-being. The books take a reflective step back from the tick-box, target-driven and increasingly regulated world of 21st century health practice; and invite us to revisit what health and health practice actually are. Building carefully on the science and philosophy of health, each book addresses the messy, complex and often chaotic world of real-life health practice and offers an ancient but now almost revolutionary understanding for students and experienced practitioners alike: that health practice is a fundamentally creative and compassionate activity. The series as a whole helps practitioners to redefine and recreate their daily practice in ways that are healthier for both patients and practitioners. The books provide a welcome antidote to demoralisation and burn-out amongst practitioners, reversing cynicism and reviving our feeling of pride in, and our understanding of, health practice. By observing practice life through different lenses, they encourage the development of efficiency, effectiveness and, above all, satisfaction. The first book in this series, The Integrated Practitioner: Surviving and Thriving in Health Practice, encourages practitioners to consider the importance of their personal position as the foundation of health practice. It inspires practitioners to consider themselves as their own most important tool', encouraging them to take better care of themselves, and provides numerous opportunities for reflection through case studies and activities.
