Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Practical Sermons In passing through a dark forest which appears to defy our entering, were we to espy a house nicely laid out, surrounded by all the necessaries of life and happi ness, would we not immediately conclude that man must have made his home there; that though no one be visible about it yet some one must have built it, must even now dwell there, since it is in such good order. Would we ever think of ascribing the origin of that house to chance, or would we dare to assert that this lifeless mass of timber thrown into the shape and form of a house had always been, there? Why, we would be laughed at; we would be called insane; and yet, my friends, will you credit it, there have been men who, looking at this vast Universe, with all its variety of beauty and order, have said that it was the work of chance that it had no author - no intelligent author - though showing efiects which could be produced by no other than an intelligent cause. This theory had its supporters, though shocking to common sense and the reason of mankind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Sermons: To Be Read in Families and Social Meetings Several years have elapsed since the author promised to a few friends, that, if life and health should be continued, he would endeavour to prepare a volume of sermons on practical subjects, to be circulated by the Presbyterian Board of Publication. Incessant occupation in professional duties, occasioned the postponement of the fulfilment of this promise from time to time; until recently, when he was informed that the Board of Publication were desirous to put such a volume into circulation; especially for the benefit of families who were deprived of the opportunity of attending on the preaching of the gospel. At first it occurred to him, that for the purposes of the Board, such a volume had better be composed of a collection of sermons contributed by different ministers of our church. But upon reflection, he was persuaded that it would be found difficult to get the proper persons to furnish discourses on the topics which might be prescribed. And he has observed, that when the sermons of several persons are included in the same volume, there is a disposition in many readers to make invidious comparisons between the authors; and while some discourses are highly valued, others are neglected. Upon the whole, it seems best that every author should make his own book; and to obtain a desirable variety, more volumes of sermons than one should be put into circulation. The author being aware that books of sermons are not in as much demand as publications of another kind, would not have consented that the Board of Publication should run the risk of an edition of this volume; but this objection was obviated by the generous proposal of the friends referred to above, to bear the whole expense of stereotyping the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book of Sermons: Practical and Controversial The following discourses are published at the suggestion and by the solicitation of friends, and not because of any special merit the author attaches to them. Some of them were written years ago, and now appear again, slightly revised. Others have been recently written, and now for the first time appear in print. The sixth sermon is an address to young men by J. Randolph tucker, formerly attorney-general of Virginia, revised and amended by the author of this work. 'i regard it as the best lay sermon extant, and as largely contributing to the value of this book. The eighteenth sermon, by Bro. Geo. Plattenburg, is a very suitable one with which to close the volume, and is specially commended to the consideration of the reader. I have not written for the critic, but for the candid enquirer after the truth; and if I have sometimes seemed severe, I beg the reader to remember that truth is a two-edged sword, cutting both ways. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Practical Subjects, Vol. 1 The Sermons of the Reverend Robert Walker have long and justly enjoyed a large portion of Public approbation. Those which were published in the Author's lifetime acquired a rapid reputation. The Sermons which were added after his death, though deficient perhaps in the last polish of an intended publication, did not detract from his well-earned fame; and the whole Work has steadily maintained the respect which it at first acquired. The present Edition, in three Volumes, contains all the Sermons of Mr. Walker, which have appeared, either during his life or after his death - as well those which were published separately as those which were collected in volumes. Though there were neither striking incidents, nor much variety, in the life of the Author, the following facts will not be unacceptable to his friends. He was born in Canongate, where his father was minister, in 1716. He received a regular education at the University of Edinburgh. Happening to reside for a few months in 1737 with a clergyman in Galloway, he was licensed to preach the gospel by the Presbytery of Kircudbright. In 1738, in consequence of an unanimous call, he was ordained minister of Straiton, within the bounds of the Presbytery of Ayr. He always mentioned this situation with particular satisfaction, and considered the years which he spent at Straiton as among the happiest years of his life. In 1746 he was translated to the Second Charge of South Leith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Sermons, Vol. 2 of 2 Mr. Milner's personal ministry, were heard to say, that while they were perusing some of the Sermons contained in it, they seemed to be hearing the voice of the Author speaking to them from the pulpit. But having attended more to this point, in preparing the present Volume for the press, the Editor hopes he has now succeeded still better, and that the pecu liar cast of instruction which distinguished the Pulpit Compositions of Mr. Milner, is so well pre served ln these Sermons, as to give them an increased interest with his surviving friends and hearers. But the other object which he has had in view is of far more importance; and this was to select such Sermons for publication, as in the opinion of the Author himself, were he now alive, would be best adapted to the spiritual condition, and the exist ing circumstances of his audience. Now the Editor certainly knows, that during the latter years of Mr. Milner's life, his mind was deeply affected on account of the religious declensions and divisions which he saw taking place in the town of Hull. He thought he perceived a proud, worldly spirit, and the excessive love -of gain, eating out the love of Christ, of his cause and people, in many who had once seemed to walk humbly with their God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical and Parochial Sermons Romans xiii.12. - "The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light." It is once again Advent in the church, and the thoughts of most of us are naturally turning to the two great events the church is now contemplating - the first lowly appearance of our Lord in our nature at Bethlehem, and his coming again in his glorious majesty to judge the world. But there are a few among us, who, without forgetting these events, have other thoughts also in our minds. We have begun to-day a new year in our public service, and "How swiftly," we have said within ourselves, "do these years run round! How rapidly are they hurrying our mortal life to an end!" Now here in the text is a holy apostle speaking nearly the same language. Our thoughts, he tells us, are his own. He states a fact to us, which places death and eternity directly before us, and then he points out to us the conduct which becomes us in our near approach to them. I. Let us consider the fad he states - "The night is far spent, the day is at hand." It will strike you at once that, in his use of these terms, the apostle directly reverses the sense in which our Lord uses them. Referring to it as the season afforded him for accomplishing his appointed work, our Lord calls the present life day; "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh when no man can work." But here the present life is called night, and the future, day. The explanation is easy - the Lord Jesus is contrasting the present scene with the stillness and darkness of the grave, while the apostle is looking on it in contrast with the bright heaven that lies beyond it. "The night" - it is a picture of the Christians present, state. In comparison with other men, he is in broad day; and so he is in comparison with his own former condition. "Ye were sometime darkness," says the apostle, "but now are ye light in the Lord." "God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." But here the apostle is not thinking of other men, nor looking back to our own natural state: he is looking forward; he has a glorious eternity in view; and as he contemplates that, he feels that he and his fellow-believers are all still in darkness, that night with its shadows is still overspreading them. And the figure, in this application of it, comes home at once to our own experience and feelings. Is night a cheerless season? So are many of our present hours to us. Is it a season of incertitude and perplexity? So are often the seasons of this mortal life. Is it a period of comparative inactivity? a period wherein we find it impossible to do many things we wish to accomplish? Who is there, that does not feel his spiritual condition here to be the same? We cannot do the things that we would; we find ourselves "sore let and hindered in running the race that is set before us." And is night a time of danger? We are never out of danger in this evil world. But it is our ignorance in this evil world, that this figure most forcibly represents. Night throws a veil over the face of things. The traveller sees nothing of the objects around him. He may be passing through the most beautiful scenes, but he might almost as well be going over a desert. Strain his eyes as he will, nature and its beauties are for the greater part hidden from him. So with us. What do we know here of the things we most wish to know? Of the things which, we are sure, would fill our hearts with admiration could we but discern them? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
