Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rearing new queens for our colonies is a rewarding and important practice that often gets mis-labelled as too difficult and complicated. This, is simply, not correct and with some planning and attention to detail new queens can be produced at a fraction of the cost that you will pay for them elsewhere. Queen rearing is an organised process where thought goes into selecting which colonies are used. It is not the same as producing new queens by using swarm cells from any colony that happens to be showing signs of swarming. When you select which colonies you want to raise queens from you are beginning the process of improving your stock. You can choose the colonies with the traits you like and avoid using those with traits that you do not like. In just a few seasons you can make a noticeable difference to your colonies. Every year thousands of queens are imported into the UK to satisfy the demand from both commercial and hobby beekeepers. The reason for this is that countries in Europe (and beyond) can produce queens earlier in the season than we can in the UK and the spring is when the highest demand for queens occurs as beekeepers are sorting out the problems they find at the end of the winter and preparing for the forthcoming summer. However, with a little preparation and forward planning queens can be produced in the preceding season to accommodate demand the following spring. This means we can focus our attention on locally bred queens that are suited to our area and reduce the risk of importing pests and diseases. Rearing your own replacement queens is both interesting and fun but apart from that it makes sense financially. The small investment that may be required is quickly recouped once you have produced just a couple of new queens.
Download or read book Better Queens written by Jay Smith and published by X-Star Publishing Company. This book was released on 2011-05-22 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jay Smith was one of the great beekeepers and queen breeders of all time. There are many queen breeding books by scientists or small-scale breeders, but this is by a beekeeper who raised thousands of queens every year. This is much more applicable to practical queen rearing. This is also a method that does not require grafting, good for those of us who can't see well enough to graft, and does not require the purchase of special equipment, good for those of us lacking in the funds to buy one of the graftless systems on the market.

Download or read book QueenSpotting written by Hilary Kearney and published by Storey Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of every bee hive is a queen bee. Since her well-being is linked to the well-being of the entire colony, the ability to find her among the residents of the hive is an essential beekeeping skill. In QueenSpotting, experienced beekeeper and professional “swarm catcher” Hilary Kearney challenges readers to “spot the queen” with 48 fold-out visual puzzles — vivid up-close photos of the queen hidden among her many subjects. QueenSpotting celebrates the unique, fascinating life of the queen bee chronicles of royal hive happenings such as The Virgin Death Match, The Nuptual Flight — when the queen mates with a cloud of male drones high in the air — and the dramatic Exodus of the Swarm from the hive. Readers will thrill at Kearney’s adventures in capturing these swarms from the strange places they settle, including a Jet Ski, a couch, a speed boat, and an owl’s nesting box. Fascinating, fun, and instructive, backyard beekeepers and nature lovers alike will find reason to return to the pages again and again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Queen Rearing The writer has had the privilege of visiting many of the most extensive queen breeders of America, both north and south, and has tried to present, in the following pages, all the best methods of practice in use in these various apiaries. The book is small, as it has been thought wise to make the descriptions brief and to the point, rather than to elaborate them fully. Beekeepers are usually busy men, and want facts presented as simply and directly as possible in a book of this kind.
