Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Instruction in Minor Tactics and Strategy, for the Use of the Regular Army and the Militia In the Franco-German War the world was astonished at the thorough knowledge which the German officers possessed of the geography and topography of the field of operations, their familiarity with the principles of minor tactics, and the consequent rapidity of movement of their forces. To-day no European nation neglects the important studies by which this knowledge was acquired, viz., military geography and the solution of practical problems in minor tactics. The officers of the European armies begin their studies in these subjects at the military academies, complete their instruction therein at the schools of application, and at every post and garrison practice the application of the principles of minor tactics thus acquired, and perfect themselves in the knowledge of the geography of their own and surrounding countries by making rapid reconnaissances in summer and studying actual campaigns in winter, and applying to both practical tactical problems. The problems herein contained were simply compiled or adapted from those given to officers at posts, at the schools of application, and at the examinations at the war academies of Europe. The examples may be multiplied indefinitely, and applied to our own country and the campaigns of our own wars, and may thus add an interest to ordinary garrison duty, and serve to impart a knowledge of the country not otherwise attainable. There is little preparation required for the pursuit of this subject and the continued practice of this system of instruction. The works of reference required are few, and maps may be obtained from the Engineer Department, or foot and mounted reconnaissances may be made at the posts, which will furnish topographical maps sufficient for all ordinary purposes. Book excerpt: “This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

Book excerpt: What determined the choices of the Greeks on the battlefield? Were their tactics defined by unwritten moral rules, or was all considered fair in war? In Classical Greek Tactics: A Cultural History, Roel Konijnendijk re-examines the literary evidence for the battle tactics and tactical thought of the Greeks during the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Rejecting the traditional image of limited, ritualised battle, Konijnendijk sketches a world of brutally destructive engagements, restricted only by the stubborn amateurism of the men who fought. The resulting model of hoplite battle does away with most received wisdom about the nature of Greek battle tactics, and redefines the way they reflected the values of Greek culture as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were no marching bands welcoming home returning troops from Vietnam, no ticker-tape parades for its heroes and no celebrations in Time Square. Instead, returning Vets were confronted with a range of reactions, not the least of which were indifference, silent disapproval, criticism, hostility and even contempt, in some quarters, for their lack of cleverness in not avoiding service in a war zone. Most returning Vietnam warriors were bewildered by the reactions of their fellow countrymen; but, then how could they possibly comprehend the psychological phenomenon which was only beginning to take hold and would later be named the "Vietnam Syndrome", a phenomenon which, at its extremes, was manifested in a revulsion to all things military? Even those who were proud of the returning servicemen and women were hardly effusive in their praise and greeted them with only muted enthusiasm. Most of these young veterans of an undeclared war had been shaped and molded in their formative years by the patriotic fervor which seized America during World War II and continued for perhaps a decade and a half after V. J. day. But, American society had profoundly changed in the 1960s with a shift in emphasis away from national goals to more individual ones such as civil rights, sexual liberation, pacifism, academic freedom, consciousness raising and a reaction against the excesses of the "military industrial complex", ironically named by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The cataclysmic cultural revolution of the 1960s collided violently with the more nationalistic goals of containing the spread of international communism and curbing the expansionist policies of the Soviet Union and Red China. Those who actually fought the Vietnam War became collateral victims of a wrenching cultural war, not of their own making; for the core values of these young men and women had, for the most part, not changed. Just as the World War II generation was imbued with traditional values of patriotism, loyalty to one's comrades, anti-totalitarianism and democratic freedom, most heroes of the Vietnam War were similarly grounded. The major difference is that while the former were celebrated, the latter were largely forgotten. Last Full Measure of Devotion calls upon us to revisit this remarkable generation of military heroes and, at long last, accord them the recognition withheld from them for almost four decades. The 22 individual profiles of Vietnam heroes contained between these covers are meant to be representative of the vast majority of Americans who served with honor in that lonely and beleaguered country on the South China Sea, more than thirty-five years ago.

Book excerpt: Sprinkled in between the fly dressings and tying lessons—and alongside his own personal anecdotes—longtime fishing guide Doug Stewart shares insights and instructions that will add to your fishing success in this illustrated guide. The Practical Fly Fisher will help you become a more complete angler, a better fly tier, and a more successful fly fisher. On top of covering all aspects of fly fishing: casting, proper equipment, tying flies, reading water, the feeding habits of fish, and the proper strategy for fishing a stretch of river, included inside in the book are the secrets of Doug’s favorite patterns. Doug Stewart, a lifelong fly fisher, is also a fly-tying instructor, guide and a fly shop owner. He has written about fly-fishing for The Oregon Sportsman and Amato Publications. Doug spent many years teaching customers how to fly fish during the thirty-two years he owned Stewart’s Fly Shop. “I think I get more out of teaching someone, out of seeing them be successful or catch their first fish, than I do out of catching my own,” Doug says.

Book excerpt: As a renowned marketing guru and small business coach, John Jantsch has become a leading advisor on how to build and grow a thriving business. In his trusted book for small businesses, he challenges readers to craft a marketing strategy that is as reliable as the go-to household item we all know, love, and turn to in a pinch: duct tape. Duct Tape Marketing shows readers how to develop and execute a marketing plan that yields more revenue and ensures the longevity of small businesses. Taking a strategic, systemic approach to marketing rather than being constantly won over to a "marketing idea of the week" helps small business leaders establish a solid--"sticky"--foundation of trust with their customers that only grows stronger with the application of more and more metaphorical tape. You'll learn how to turn your marketing efforts into a lead generation machine and move far beyond your week-to-week strategizing to create long-term plans for your business's continual growth. Plus, the revised and updated edition of this industry-leading book includes all new tools, rules, and tactics that respond to the ways social media and digital developments have shifted and evolved the marketing landscape. Let's face it: as a small business owner, you are really in the business of marketing. This practical, actionable guide includes fresh ideas that stick where you put them--and stand the test of time.
