Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Pathology and Morbid Histology To the student, however, such an extensive knowledge of histology is not a necessity, as he will have, in the laboratory, someone to show him the different changes as he proceeds with his work it is, how ever, necessary that he should have a set of normal specimens to refer to, and here he will find those made by him during his course in the histological laboratory simply invaluable. This work is intended to be a help to students taking a regular laboratory course, and also to others wishing to form a. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Pathology: A Manual for Students and Practitioners The plan adopted is to follow the tissue from the body to the microscope, to describe the method of making the post-mortem and naked-eye examinations, and of preparing the various structures for microscopic investigation: The more important changes of each organ are indicated, though all the changes which occur could not possibly be considered in the Space at command. In all cases the aim has been to describe at least the more, important typical lesions. In as many instances as possible, illustrations, which are not mere diagrams, are added. Most of the original Drawings have been made from Sections prepared in the course of the work of the Edinburgh University Practical Pathology Class. They may therefore be accepted as representing as faithfully as possible the appearances which may be recognised by any normally intelligent and dexterous student. The copied Drawings, taken from the best sources, are, as far as possible, acknowledged in the descriptions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pathological Technique: A Practical Manual for Workers in Pathological Histology The order and method of procedure in making a post mortem examination, including the various incisions, may be said to have been planned for the routine examination of normal or diffusely diseased organs. As soon as a notice able focal lesion is present the order of procedure and the customary method of removal and of incision must be so altered as best to display the lesion. Instruments - The following instruments will be found extremely useful in the autopsy-room, although not all of them are necessary: The autopsy-table should be large, so as to accommodate on it the instruments and several dishes in addition to the body. It should have a slightly raised edge, and should slope gently toward an Opening in the center for the escape of fluids. The table is best made of zinc, and along one edge should have a centimeter scale. The water for use on the table is best supplied by a rubber tube from an overhead pipe reaching to within 60 to 100 cm. Of the table. The scales for weighing the various organs should have a large pan and gram and kilogram weights. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Pathology, Vol. 1: Systematic and Practical Aberdeen University, it unavoidably fell into abeyance for a con siderable period. On resuming it, I felt that the system at first adopted was calculated to give too narrow a view of what has now become a very wide and important science; and I accordingly destroyed the early manuscript and remodelled the whole ab initio. It will, I think, be granted that the Pathology of to-day is not delimitable merely as a matter of pure morbid anatomy, pathological histology, pathological physiology, pathological chemistry, or clinical medicine; but that these are simply the members of a great body, and that they are indissolubly band together. All pathologists of renown, at home and sinned, hare served a lengthy apprenticeship in morbid anatomy prior to their becoming exponents of the science of disease. And, for that matter, the continuance in after life of daily observatim in the post-mortem theatre is as essential to the pathologist as digital study is to the physician, seeing that it is here that subjects {or further inquiry suggest themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histology and Pathology: A Manual for Students and Practitioners It is the purpose of this work to present all the essential facts relating to the normal histology and the pathological anatomy and histology of man in a systematic and concise way. In subjects so well established as these, originality of data is little to be expected, and the chief object to be aimed at is arrangement and treatment of the subject in a manner convenient and clear to students and practitioners of medicine, for whom this treatise is intended. It is attempted to present the subject up to the most recent discoveries and developments, avoiding points unsettled and in doubt. The part on normal histology is written entirely by Dr. Nichols, that on pathology entirely by Dr. Yale. Each is fully responsible for the statements in his own part, and for those only. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Pathology This book represents an attempt to describe in a reasonable compass such laboratory investigations, whether chemical, histological or bacteriological, as have a practical bearing upon the diagnosis and treatment of disease; to give some account of their meaning, and to assess, so far as possible, their value in practice. Many of the smaller text-books of Clinical Pathology deal with the subject only in part; the complexity of methods in the larger works renders them more suitable to special investigators, and it was felt that a book of intermediate size might be of use to the student and practitioner. The reduction in size has been mainly arrived at by avoidance of a reduplication of methods, in preference to the omission of any essential branch of the subject. Where several methods for the same object are in use, one, or at most two, are described in full: the remainder are omitted altogether. Much of scientific interest has been necessarily sacrificed to the practical application of diagnostic methods, and the book has consequently no pretensions to consideration as anything more than an adjunct to clinical medicine. No list of references is given, and the names of authorities, unless definitely associated with a particular reaction, are for the most part omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Pathology: A Manual of Autopsy and Laboratory Technique for Students and Physicians The first edition of this book, in spite of numerous typographic errors beyond the control of the writer, was very soon exhausted. An apology is due the many, to whom, during the last ten years, a new edition has been repeatedly promised. The writers only excuse for the failure to fulfill these promises has been the pressure of other work that has prevented such fulfillment. In the final accomplishment of these promises the book has been practically rewritten and more than doubled in size. The autopsy method given in the main text is a composite one, made up from the Rokitansky, Virchow, Chiari and Nauwerck methods, according to the judgment of the writer as to what was the best in these, and put together with modifications and additions arising out of his own experience. The aim has been to offer a method by which an autopsy can be performed with the greatest speed and ease, and at the same time with the greatest completeness, the various steps of the operation following in logical order in such a way that nothing can be lost or destroyed, and thereby revealing a complete picture of the pathologic conditions present. A choice of methods is offered whenever the aims of the examination may be so varied as to make variations in method advantageous. The general order of the autopsy is the same as that given in the Protocol Blank-book, the present book being designed as a guide and reference-book for that. The points to be noted in the examination of each region are given in connection with the method of examination of that region, and represent the condensed special pathology of the latter. This should be of great service to the beginner in autopsy work, as affording a concise but complete guide to the most important conditions of each region. A text-book on Special Pathology should be used as a reference book in connection with these condensed statements of special pathology. The technical methods for microscopic examination given in Part II have been brought up to date, and all recent methods of value included. Original methods have been given in preference to modifications; the latter, when of value, are also mentioned. As a rule that method has been chosen which in the light of the writers laboratory experience has yielded uniform the best results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Elementary Practical Histology This work is not only intended for medical students working in a well-furnished laboratory under a teacher, but for students of all denominations who can command the means and have the wish to construct for themselves a histological cabinet for study and future reference. With this object in view it differs from all other textbooks of histology in several particulars, but notably these: It contains a list of all the apparatus required; the classification of the structures which have to be collected is novel; and it contains much detail in the various processes anticipating the absence of a teacher. Every process has been thoroughly tested, so that however imperfect these processes may be, such as they are, they can at least be relied upon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strong grounding in basic histology is essential for all pathologists. However, there had always been a gap between histology and pathology in which histologic information specifically for the pathologist was often lacking. Histology for Pathologists deals with the microscopic features of normal human tissues, from the perspective of the surgical pathologist. This is the only text that uses human (vs. animal) tissues for the histology. It is the best reference in the literature for information on normal histology, and, as such, is essential for all clinical pathologists. Written by pathologists for pathologists, the new edition updates the pathologist's understanding of normal histology up to date with the incremental advances made in the last five years. The 3rd edition has become a "classic" purchased by virtually all residents beginning their pathology training, as well as pathologists in practice. The 4th edition builds on that substantial foundation. The table of contents remains essentially the same with the exception of some changes in authorship.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Pathological Histology: With Special Reference to Practical Methods Apology or comment seems scarcely necessary in introducing to English readers a work of so well-established a reputation as Professor Weichselbaum's Grundriss der Pathologischen Histologic. Neither has it been thought needful or desirable to make many additions, and, consequently, the only ones of any length are the note on the Gum Freezing Method on p. 24 (which the popularity of that method in this country seemed to demand), and the very brief account of Dr. Bevan Lewis's useful process appended to the chapter on the Nervous System (p. 351). Some insertions in the text, chiefly relating to terminology, have been distinguished by square brackets when it seemed worth while, and a few foot-notes similarly and with the letters " - Tr." following. Under the former head may be noted the exact zoological names of the animal parasites, which, when differing from the more popular designations, have been appended to the latter, and for which, as well as for the facts mentioned in the note on p. 180, I am indebted to Professor H. M. Mackintosh, of the University of Dublin, who kindly revised the chapter in question. Some alterations, however, have been made in the typography and arrangement. Thus the work has been thrown into chapters, English fashion (though these correspond for the most part with the Abschnitte in the original), and long sections have in some instances been broken up into two or more. It has also been thought advisable to print the practical portions in a smaller type than the descriptive, which it is hoped will facilitate reference.
