Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Health One of the most important topics of the hour is how to use the mind rightly for practical purposes in individual life. Interest in the subject has been rapidly growing for many years; and the literature of the day shows in many ways a strong undercurrent of inquiry as well as a development of knowledge along the lines that lead to practical results. All Of these lines of progress exhibit varieties of the same general appreciation of the importance of understanding the finer forces Of nature and of our being, which are not manifest in sense-action; and of the more subtile Operations of the mind that are often overlooked while hurrying to and fro in personal affairs. The ideas advanced on the intricate processes of the higher faculties are not all of them sufficiently Sound to assure a right judgment. There is however a certain degree of truth underlying all the reasonings, and a correct interpretation that all may understand is vitally important. While the advance must always be led by a small but zealous group of workers, an accurate and up-to-date knowledge of the elementary facts of these two subjects should be the common property of all the people. It is the purpose of Practical Health Les sons to present to pupils in the grammar grades of the elementary schools, in clear and simple language, all the essential facts of personal hygiene and as much of public hygiene as every citizen ought to know. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Health Series Early in the history of mental healing these things were vaguely recognized, but little effort was at first made to develop them into a working hypothesis. About twenty years ago a few saw the far-reaching importance of this fact of Mental Imaging and its physical results and began experimenting. The prin cipal points of fact were rapidly developed and proved invariably the actual ex15tence of the law. The road was not a smooth one, however, and the most of those to whom the little then known had been conveyed soon apparently abandoned the new hypothesis for the easier though less efficient system of applying general thought for purposes of treatment, ignoring, mean while, the fact of a particular image being present and active In each individual case. Some mental work was saved, perhaps, in this way, but always with a loss of efficiency, especially in critical cases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Change of Life in Health and Disease: A Practical Treatise on the Nervous and Other Affections Incidental to Women at the Decline of Life Variable as the duration of this time is in difl'erent women, it receives a certain degree of precision from the date of the last menstrual flow, which divides the change of life into two periods. When in the course of this work I speak Of cessation, I always mean the cessation of the menstrual flow. There is no medical term to designate the time included between the first indications of the failure of ovarian energy, and cessation, but women call it the dodging time, and as it happily ex presses the uncertain and erratic appearance of the menstrual flow, I shall use the phrase to indicate the first part of the change of life in contradistinction to the last part, which begins at cessation, and concludes with the permanent restoration of health. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Body in Health The aim has been kept in view of awakening in the young a normal desire to live in such a manner as to develop strength and preserve health, because in this way one may best achieve success in securing the things which he desires, and in avoiding the disabilities and pains which otherwise are likely to occupy a considerable part of his life. Comparatively little attention is given to anatomy, and only sufficient physiology is presented to constitute a basis for the facts of health which are discussed. Very extensive use is made of photographs and diagrams illustrating everyday life in the City and in the country. There is at least one interesting and practical original exercise suggested for every principle of health presented in each lesson. In order further to assist the teacher and the pupil, a list of questions, fully covering the text, has been given at the end of each Chapter. We often hear it said, that the deaths Of the young and gifted are mys terious dispensations of Providence; when if Physiology were questioned, she might prove that they had fallen victims to their own neglect or violation of laws to which inevitable penalties have been attached, and which have been imposed upon our nature for our benefit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book of Health for the Million: With Practical Remarks on Bathing, Diet, Exercise, Disease, and the Water Cure The human body has been aptly compared to a sack filled with hair. Now, suppose each hair to be a tube of a peculiar size, through which a stream of blood is constantly flowing. These tubes are, everywhere, permeated with extremely small ner vous threads, which communicate to them the power by which their size is increased or_ diminished. Their activiti, or the quantity of blood circulated through these tubes depends on their size - these, when contracted, convey the blood with greater ve locity, and when enlarged, they' convey less. The body'is almost entirely made up of little tubes or capillary vessels, and health depends upon their com parative size, and, consequently, upon the quantity of blood which they convey in a given time. When the due amount of nervouspower is communicated, at the proper times, the heart dilates and contracts regularly; the vpluntary and other muscles obey without obstruction the several necessities which call them into action -the various secretions are made at the proper periods - the vital afiinity predominates in its tendencies to preserve all parts of the system against the destructive power of oxygen, which tends to break them down, and the balance of power is duly maintained between the digestive, absorbing.
