Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Farm Drainage: Why, When, and How to Tile Drain The following pages are presented to those who are interested in the subject of farm drainage. So short has been the time since the introduction of tile drainage in the prairie States, that farmers have scarcely taken time to acquire the requisite knowledge of the subject before they have begun actual operations. The drainage practice of the eastern States must be adapted to western soil and surroundings. This requires time and close observation. The object of these few pages is to give, in a concise and plain manner, that which the farmer should know, if he contemplates draining his farm. It is not the intention of the author to say all there is to be said upon the subject, but to say enough to give the farmer an elementary knowledge of why, when, where and how to drain his farm. The practical methods described in these pages have been well tested, and are now in constant use by practical men. It is hoped that the language is sufficiently clear to be understood by all. Download or read book The Drought-Resilient Farm written by Dale Strickler and published by Storey Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rainfall levels are rarely optimal, but there are hundreds of things you can do to efficiently conserve and use the water you do have and to reduce the impact of drought on your soil, crops, livestock, and farm or ranch ecosystem. Author Dale Strickler introduces you to the same innovative systems he used to transform his own drought-stricken family farm in Kansas into a thriving, water-wise, and profitable enterprise, maximizing healthy cropland, pasture, and water supply. Ranging from simple, short-term projects such as installing rain-collection ollas to long-term land-management planning strategies, Strickler’s methods show how to get more water into the soil, keep it in the soil, and help plants and livestock access it.

Download or read book Farm Irrigation written by Neil Southorn and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1998-02-04 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that irrigation makes a major contribution to agricultural production, making a whole range of crops viable in an otherwise unreliable climate and helping insure against drought. However irrigation does not automatically guarantee a profit and acclaim, it is a high cost exercise, using water from increasingly scarce supplies, and contributes to environmental concerns of the community. Many of the pressures facing some irrigators have been caused by a lack of understanding in the past of best practices necessary in design, installation and management.Alternative methods of irrigation are presented, emphasising the characteristics of each that may make them suitable (or unsuitable) for particular situations. The range of crops under irrigation is very wide, and so too is the range of methods available to get water to them. Horticultural crops are included as well as broadacre crops. This section is followed by technical information of the various components that make up an irrigation system, and their installation.Irrigation is concerned with providing the optimum soil moisture conditions for plant growth. So to is drainage, in that too much water in the soil will retard growth. Many of the concepts surrounding irrigation are applicable to a consideration of drainage, so the book discusses that technology as well.
