Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Economics The rise and rapid spread of business education which has been such a prominent feature of our modern educational system has not only resulted in a call for courses dealing with particular fields of business activity, as accounting, banking and selling, but has considerably augmented the demand for a knowledge of the gen eral theory of business as treated in the science of economics. From long association with business men as well as from the teaching and discussion of economics with students drawn largely from the ranks of practical men of affairs, I have been impressed with the insistent demand for a simpler and more concrete state ment of economic theory than is usually found in the standard works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Economics or Studies in Economic Planning In these days, that Simple faith has been eclipsed. Our fathers were much less certain of it than our grandfathers; and in our own day it is held at all only by way of obstinate reaction against the pre vailing conditions. Some economists continue to preach the theoretical soundness Of the older doctrine; but even they have to admit that the chance Of' seeing it applied in the modern world, as it was largely applied in Victorian England, has become Very small indeed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Thousand Dollars a Day: Studies in Practical Economics It seems to me that the accompanying little sketches are timely. A deal of thinking must be done by all classes of people before any solution is attempted of the problems in economics that are pressing upon us, and any factor that will help turn the general mind to this unwonted exercise may be termed a useful one. There is one sketch for which I wish to make a special plea. "The Discontented Machine" has been criticised as teaching a false principle in economics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scope and Method of Political Economy The nature of the topics discussed in the following pages is sufficiently indicated in the introductory chapter, and a lengthy preface is therefore unnecessary. The abstract discussion of methods may appear to some to have mainly an academic interest, since it does not directly extend our knowledge of economic phenomena. Whilst, however, we ought to be upon our guard against allowing any such discussion to obscure the greater importance of actual economic investigations, the subject is one to which all students of economics must necessarily give some attention in the course of their reading, and its indirect bearing on the solution of practical economic questions is very far indeed from being without importance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Home Economics The object of this book is to offer suggestions for the organiza tion, administration, and teaching of the home economics studies. In the preparation of the book the authors have endeavored to adapt it to the various types of persons whose needs they hope to serve. Before the war these studies were recognized by some as an essential part of the general education of every girl. With the declaration of peace, they assume a new significance and appear as an indispensable part of her education. This is true because every girl needs instruction regarding better and more healthful living, and training in those practices which will enable her to live her daily life more intelligently, to rear her children more thoughtfully, and to serve her community and country more efficiently. These studies are needed by some because they prepare also for certain definite wage-earning vocations. This book draws the distinction between home economics studies as organized for general or liberal education purposes and such lines of specialized vocational training as may have grown out of them. It is the conviction of the authors that only through a closely woven course involving both theory and practice can the subject matter offered have any real value to the students. The book presupposes courses in the various phases of Home Economics, practical, scientific, artistic, economic, and sociological, of greater or less intensity. In other words, it is taken for granted that the student who will use it will be familiar with the scope of the field, and that her course in methods will serve as a means of evaluating and unifying the material she gains through her tech nical courses, and interpreting it in terms of elementary and secondary school teaching. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working Principles of Political Economy in a New and Practical Form: A Book The aim of this book is to give, in small compass, a sufficient view of economic doctrine for the ordinary needs of intelligent citizens. I have had two principal motives in writing it. In the first place, I wished to show that the principles of Political Economy may be developed in such a form as to bring out, more clearly than is done in the standard books, their close and vital connection with every - day industry. In the second place, I wished to suggest some modifications, chiefly in points of detail, of the conclusions commonly accepted hitherto by the leading economists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Economics This book is designed to be an introduction to the science of economics. Technical discussions and difficult terminology have been avoided. The author has endeavored to write a book of practical value to the student, but is convinced that any practical work must be founded upon sound theory. There are many economic questions upon which there may be differences of opinion. Both sides of most disputed questions are given. Students should be encouraged to draw their own conclusions after weighing the evidence. While the experience of most teachers of economics has convinced them that one book should be followed as a guide, students should read references in other works. Fortunately there are many excellent books - perhaps too difficult in parts for the beginner - containing many chapters that can be read with profit by even an immature student. Among many works suitable for reference purposes the following are especially recommended: Bulloch, Introduction to the Study of Economics; Carver, Principles of Political Economy; Ely, Outlines of Economics; Fetter, Principles of Economics; Seager, Introduction to Economics; and Turner, Introduction to Economics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Economics This book is an outgrowth of classroom discussions. It contains in substance the talks on economics which have been made, for the past eleven years, to my Classes in Cornell and New York Universities. NO apology is offered for the fact that this volume is limited to a discussion of principles. Even the concluding chapters on corporations are designed to exemplify princi ples. The time has long since passed when a single volume can treat exhaustively the whole field of economics. I shall be more than content if this work justifies the scope indicated for it in the title - Introduction to Economics. Designed as an introduction, this book will serve as a means to the end of a more intelligent study of economic questions. It does not dispense with the necessity of read ing the many excellent treatises devoted to the different phases of economics; rather it distinctly calls for such read ings. It merely prepares the mind of the student for the thought contained in the more advanced and specialized works on the subject and the practical applications they reveal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Economics, Vol. 1: A Practical Exposition of the Science of Business With Illustrations From Actual Experience The Course and Service was originally issued in the United States some years ago, and has been most favor ably received by the business public. It has been revised from time to time and is kept up to date by the Staff of the Alexander Hamilton Institute. The Course is now rewritten for the use of Canadian readers. Three of the texts in this Canadian revision are entirely new. Every other book and pamphlet has either been thoroughly revised or is original matter written by some authority who is familiar at first hand with Canadian conditions and practice. The result is an unusual com bination of the accumulated business knowledge and business experience of both Canada and the United States. The series of texts is the basis of the Modern Business Course and Service. It Should be clearly understood that the texts are not designed to cover thoroughly and in detail every point that ought to be included in a study of present-day business. They do contain a treatment of all essential principles of the growing science of busi ness. Applications of these principles will be found in the Talks, Lectures, Problems and Service.
