Thus the great objection to many First Latin Books, that they fill the memory of the pupil with forms of statement that must be laid aside as soon as he passes to his Grammar, is entirely obviated in this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Latin: An Introductory Course In the preparation of these lessons, the author has kept in view the necessity for simplicity of statement and for the avoidance of unnecessary details. The purpose has been to furnish drill on the forms and constructions of most frequent occurrence, leaving the more difficult syntactical relations and the forms less frequently employed for a later point in the course. A few topics included in the lessons near the end of the book have been given place in order to meet the needs of teachers who prefer a more complete presentation of Latin grammar in the first year. These topics may, however, be omitted and the work of the lessons made to consist of the translation exercises and drill on the essential constructions and forms previously given. Instead of the usual arrangement of lessons which must be divided into two or three assignments, the plan has been adopted of providing short lessons which can usually be covered in single recitations. Naturally, no such plan can be, made to correspond absolutely to the needs of every class, and occasionally a teacher may find it necessary to omit or to leave for later review, part of the exercises of a lesson. But the presentation of forms and syntax in small units will, it is hoped, tend to prevent confusion in the mind of the pupil and to aid the teacher in planning the work of the class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Latin Grammar In employing comparative philology in this book, I have always kept in View the practical nature of the work, and therefore have given only so much as I have deemed suitable. In most cases I have stated doubts where doubts exist but in a few I have said nothing of the matter. Thus I have marked the stems of the verbs in a, e, and i of the fourth conjugation long I have made the e of eba part of the word denoting the imperfect; I have assumed the 77 in the present of the third conjugation as a euphonic vowel, - though all these points have been doubted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First and Second Latin Book and Practical Grammar In announcing a fifth edition of the First and Second Latin Book, the Editor very gladly embraces the Oppor. Tunity a 'orded him, of brie y stating what changes and improvements have been made, in order to render the work more worthy of the unprecedented success which it has met with. At the suggestion of several eminent practical teachers, the matter formerly in the Appendix, and intro. Ductory to the Exercises in the Second Latin Book, has been entirely rearranged, considerably augmented, and put into a shape better suited to the purposes of those who wish to use the Second Latin Book instead of an ordinary Gram mar. There has also been added a carefully drawn up Synopsis of Latin Syntax, which may be used to peculiar advantage in drilling boys in the Exercises and Reading Lessons. The Editor indulges the hope that these changes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for Schools This book is in the main an abridgment for school purposes of my larger Latin Grammar, but the abridgment is very unequal, some pans being reproduced with slight omissions, some parts bem g largely reduced, and others again being rewritten. Under the last head fall especially chaps. I and ii of Book I, and chap. Vi of Book II. Of the last-named chapter, part, particularly 132, contains an analysis which is, I think, new and interesting. I have added an English trans lation of the Examples in almost the whole of the Syntax. It Will be found that in some cases I have given the ordinary English equivalent, whilst in others I have aimed rather at explaining the Latin construction. Three Appendices are new, viz. Those on Metre, on Grammatical and Rhetorical terms, and on Latin authors. Some changes in arrangement have been made (e. G. As regards degrees of comparison, and Numerals) to suit ordinary usage. The Index has been made fuller than is usual m a book of this class - so full, that it may not be unimportant to observe that the book is really intended not for reference, but for study: The lists are not exhaustive, the statements of occur rence or non-occurrence of forms or expressions must not be taken too literally, but only as approximations to the truth, with especial regard to the classical authors and' usages of recognized authority in schools and many of the rarer usages are not noticed at all, but left to be picked up in the student's own reading, or obtained, when needed, from a dictionary. The troublesome nomenclature common to many School Grammars is as far as possible avoided; and a Short Catechism of Syntax takes the place of the usual Latin Rules. In the treatment of Latin Accidence the beaten tracks pointed out by immemorial usage have been generally ad hered to. The principal change is the subdivision of the Perfect into two separate Tenses, conformably to its twofold usage, (a) as 3. Present Past, (6) as a Simple Past. This alteration will compel every boy who meets with a Perfect to stop, if only as part of his parsing lesson, and re ect which Tense is meant. It also enables us to group the Tenses in the paradigm under the heads of Primary and Historic, a distinction important for boys to remember. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Grammar of the Latin Language: With a Series of Latin and English Exercises for Translation and a Collection of Latin Reading Lessons, With the Requisite Vocabularies The book is constructed upon the principle of putting every thing into practice as fast as acquired. Every grammatical form or principle of syntax, as soon as learned, is to be ren dered practical and fixed in the mind, by translations first from the Latin into the English, and then from the English into the Latin. To prepare the pupil for these exercises in translation, such forms of the verb as are requisite for con structing the Simplest sentences are given at the outset, and a few simple rules of Syntax as they are required, while all along in connection with the exercises, lists of Latin words with their definitions are given to be committed to memory, most of which, also, are collected and arranged in alphabetical Vocabularies at the end of the book. As many of the examples for trans lation as possible, were selected unaltered from the classics, others were slightly altered to suit the cases for which they were employed, and the remainder composed by the author, yet always so as to embody classical ideas and turns of thought. The examples in English may be translated into Latin, either viva voce or by writing, at the discretion of the teacher. With regard to the mode of using the book the intelligent teacher will be the best judge. In some cases it will proba bly be found best to take the pupil over the first and perhaps the second Course, omitting the English exercises at first, and then return and take them up in connection with a thorough review of the whole. Perhaps, also, a judicious teacher, fol lowing out the general principle of the book, of diminishing difficulties by division and distribution, will think best, with very young pupils in particular, to omit some other things the first time over and take them up at subsequent reviews. But whatever course is pursued in teaching the book, a complete mastery of all that it contains should be aimed at from the beginning, and should be actually attained before it is left. It is the result of a thor ough and complete revision of the author's Latin Gram mar published in 1864.
