Book Synopsis Sea Basing by : National Research Council
Download or read book Sea Basing written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-08-14 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of land bases from which to launch and maintain military, diplomatic, and humanitarian relief operations is becoming increasingly uncertain because of physical or political constraints. The ability to operate from a sea base, therefore, is likely to become more and more important. The Defense Science Board recently concluded that Sea Basing will be a critical future joint military capability and that DOD should proceed to develop such capability. Following the DSB report, the Navy requested that the National Research Council (NRC) convene a workshop to assess the science and technology base, both inside and outside the Navy, for developing Sea Basing and to identify R&D for supporting future concepts. This report of the workshop includes an examination of Sea Basing operational concepts; ship and aircraft technology available to make Sea Basing work; and issues involved in creating the sea base as a joint system of systems.

Book Synopsis Progress Toward Development of Civil Airworthiness Criteria for Powered-Lift Aircraft by :
Download or read book Progress Toward Development of Civil Airworthiness Criteria for Powered-Lift Aircraft written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of a joint NASA-FAA research program directed toward development of civil airworthiness flight-criteria for power-lift transports. Tentative criteria are proposed for performance and handling characteristics for powered-lift transport aircraft in commercial service. The aircraft considered are primarily wing-supported vehicles which rely upon the propulsion system for a significant portion of lift and control. VTOL aircraft are excluded. The flight criteria treat primarily the approach and landing flight phases, because it is in these flight phases that the greatest use of powered lift is made, and the greatest differences from conventional aircraft tend to appear. Consequently, the flight task tends to become most demanding. The tentative criteria are based on simulation and flight experience with a variety of powered-lift concepts. These concepts have not employed flight director, advanced displays, or advanced augmentation systems. The tentative criteria proposed were formulated by a working group comprised of representatives of the U.S., British, French, and Canadian airworthiness authorities, as well as research personnel of the NASA and other organizations. It is recognized that more work is needed to assure general applicability of the critera. (Author).

Book Synopsis Airport Performance Estimation for Powered Lift Aircraft by :
Download or read book Airport Performance Estimation for Powered Lift Aircraft written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical technique based on known methods was developed to predict the takeoff and landing performance characteristics of powered lift aircraft. Two-degree-of-freedom equations of motion treating the aircraft as a point mass are integrated using numerical techniques based on Euler's method of forward integration. The analysis includes the calculation of all engines operating takeoff distance, critical field length, landing distance and climb capability. Predictions were made for aircraft with externally blown flaps and upper surface blown flaps and compared with the performance quoted by the respective airframe manufacturer. Good correlation was achieved.
Book Synopsis The Future of Aerospace by : National Academy of Engineering
Download or read book The Future of Aerospace written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few technological advances have affected the lives and dreams of individuals and the operations of companies and governments as much as the continuing development of flight. From space exploration to package transport, from military transport to passenger helicopter use, from passenger jumbo jets to tilt-rotor commuter planes, the future of flying is still rapidly developing. The essays in this volume survey the state of progress along several fronts of this constantly evolving frontier. Five eminent authorities assess prospects for the future of rotary-wing aircraft, large passenger aircraft, commercial aviation, manned spaceflight, and defense aerospace in the post-Cold War era.
