Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tennis is not a game for the faint of heart. It is one of the few sports where a player must not only keep score but also act as both umpire and referee. A tennis match has no time clock, no halftime, no timeouts, no substitutions, and can last anywhere from thirty minutes to four hours. During that time, players may run over five miles and hit well over a thousand shots. In the end, both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat rest solely upon the players’ shoulders. So what can a player do today to win more games than not? John Ruder relies on thirty-five years of coaching and teaching tennis to share a Tactical Point Control System that breaks the tennis point into four distinct phases, teaches competitors how to play in each phase, provides a checkpoint system that allows players to discover why they are winning or losing each point, and shares guidance on how to develop a game plan that enables players to better compete against opponents of all levels. Winning Tennis with the Tactical Point Control System shares a simple and effective game plan that allows tennis players to excel in the game and score points against their toughest opponents.

Book excerpt: Sports performance is primarily associated with elite sport, however, recreational athletes are increasingly attempting to emulate elite athletes. Performance optimization is distinctly multidisciplinary. Optimized training concepts and the use of state-of-the-art technologies are crucial for improving performance. However, sports performance enhancement is in constant conflict with the protection of athletes’ health. Notwithstanding the known positive effects of physical activity on health, the prevention and management of sports injuries remain major challenges to be addressed. Accordingly, this Special Issue on "Sports Performance and Health" consists of 17 original research papers, one review paper, and one commentary, and covers a wide range of topics related to fatigue, movement asymmetries, optimization of sports performance by training, technique, and/or tactics enhancements, prevention and management of sports injuries, optimization of sports equipment to increase performance and/or decrease the risk of injury, and innovations for sports performance, health, and load monitoring. As this Special Issue offers several new insights and multidisciplinary perspectives on sports performance and health, readers from around the world who work in these areas are expected to benefit from this Special Issue collection.

Book excerpt: From a review in the Australian Law Journal:"This book is a delightful surprise, for within its bare title the authors have covered the law concerning powers of attorney on both sides of the Tasman. The text is written in a clear and lucid fashion. It is well laid out, and provides in convenient form the texts of the relevant legislation applying throughout Australia and in New Zealand. It provides an accurate summary of the law as applying at the end of 1992. The index is unusually comprehensive, and the coverage of this area of law is thoroughly professional. It should prove to be a most useful text for practitioners in areas of company law, probate, and family law who will appreciate the specimen forms and clauses offered. It is so wide in its potential utility that (given its sensible price) it should be on every solicitor's bookshelf."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States today is the most powerful nation in the world, perhaps even stronger than Rome was during its heyday. It is likely to remain the world's preeminent power for at least several decades to come. What behavior is appropriate for such a powerful state? To answer this question, Robert J. Art concentrates on "grand strategy"—the deployment of military power in both peace and war to support foreign policy goals. He first defines America's contemporary national interests and the specific threats they face, then identifies seven grand strategies that the United States might contemplate, examining each in relation to America's interests. The seven are:• dominion—forcibly trying to remake the world in America's own image;• global collective security—attempting to keep the peace everywhere;• regional collective security—confining peacekeeping efforts to Europe;• cooperative security—seeking to reduce the occurrence of war by limiting other states' offensive capabilities;• isolationism—withdrawing from all military involvement beyond U.S. borders;• containment—holding the line against aggressor states; and• selective engagement—choosing to prevent or to become involved only in those conflicts that pose a threat to the country's long-term interests.Art makes a strong case for selective engagement as the most desirable strategy for contemporary America. It is the one that seeks to forestall dangers, not simply react to them; that is politically viable, at home and abroad; and that protects all U.S. interests, both essential and desirable. Art concludes that "selective engagement is not a strategy for all times, but it is the best grand strategy for these times."
