Book excerpt: "Is this right? Is this how it's supposed to look?" Adolescent writers often ask these kinds of questions because traditional grammar instruction focuses too much on what's right or what's wrong. The fear of making a mistake hides the true power of conventions - the creation of meaning, purpose, and effect, the ultimate reading-writing connection. Join Jeff Anderson, with Travis Leech and Melinda Clark, as they explore grammar in a new way in Patterns of Power: Inviting Adolescent Writers into the Conventions of Language, Grades 6-8. Let's lift middle school writers by focusing on possibility and producing effective writing that will transfer to the classroom and beyond. Inside Patterns of Power, Grades 6-8, teachers will find a quick yet comprehensive explanation of the invitational process--the easy-to-follow, brain-based process created to invite adolescent writers to learn about and apply conventions of the English language through the celebration of author's purpose and craft. This process is the foundation on which 55 authentic, flexible, and effective lesson sets were built. Through practical guidance and ready-to-use lessons, you'll be fully equipped to teach grammar in an engaging and authentic way in just 10 minutes a day. Book excerpt: Jeff Anderson and literacy coach Whitney La Rocca take you into primary and intermediate classrooms where students are curious about language, engage with the world around them, and notice and experiment with the conventions all writers use. Instead of chanting grammar rules or completing countless convention worksheets, we invite young writers to explore conventions as special effects devices that activate meaning. Our students study authentic texts and come to recognize these "patterns of power"--the essential grammar conventions that readers and writers require to make meaning. The first part of the book introduces a vibrant approach to grammar instruction and sets up what you need to immerse yourself in the Patterns of Power process, inviting students to experiment and play with language. The second part of the book offers over seventy practical, ready-to-use lessons, including: Extensive support materials Over 100 mentor sentences, curated for grades 1-5 Student work samples Tips and power notes to facilitate your own knowledge and learning Examples for application In Patterns of Power Jeff and Whitney suggest that taking just five minutes from your reading workshop and five minutes from your writing workshop to focus on how the conventions connect reading and writing will miraculously affect your students' understanding of how language works for readers and writers.

It will help executives, regulators, investors, and concerned citizens better navigate their way through the digital transformation of everything. Professor Clemons presents six patterns for staying competitive and achieving profitable business models. Book excerpt: Featuring interiors by today’s top designers, The Power of Pattern shows how wallpaper and fabric designs can be used to elevate and personalize every room. Both a beautiful interiors book and a resource guide, it features a diversity of interiors and styles, showcasing the patterns themselves in full-page splendor. Best-selling interiors author Susanna Salk turns her focus to patterns, celebrating their versatility and creative possibilities, from a dash of colorful pattern in the entryway to the whimsy of a uniquely upholstered chair in the dining room or a luxuriously textured bedroom curtain. A practical primer on the many motifs available—“Nature”, “Animal”, “Floral”, “Ikat”, “Chinoiserie”, “Stripes”, and “Toile” are some of the chapters—this volume presents myriad versions of each, with inspiring examples of how to decorate with them. Salk also provides tips on how to use pattern in a particular space—for example, stripes create the illusion of a bigger room, and floral patterns look modern and bold (not fussy) when used on a big scale in bright colors. Presenting rooms by design stars such as Alessandra Branca, Miles Redd, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, and Mary McDonald, among others, The Power of Pattern teaches how to mix and match to make a house look effortlessly decorated. And Salk’s encouraging design tips give inspirational ideas and practical tips, opening up a world of decorating creativity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reform of teacher education has been a focal point of state action in industrial countries since the early 1980s. Given this convergence of educational and governmental activity, the studies presented here are a significant departure from conventional discourse on reform, because they explore the ways that social regulation and political power operate through the processes of educational reform. This book considers the reform of teacher education to be an integral part of the larger system of social regulation that takes place in the arena of schooling. Reforms in teacher education involve complex sets of interactions among and within social institutions. These interactions help shape power relations and patterns of social regulation that operate through state, university, and school interactions. Nevertheless, the patterns that give direction and value to teacher education are not easily discerned in public discussions of educational change. Instead, many of the most important regulatory aspects of teacher education reform are partly obscured by a public discourse that focuses attention on formal responses to socioeconomic events, and that tends to divert critical attention away from the power that is exercised—and the interests that are served—during reform. This volume presents studies of reform in Australia, Finland, Iceland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Although these countries differ in their political and social histories, rates and levels of industrialization, and patterns of educational practice, there is a striking commonality in both the strategies that are employed to reform teacher education, and in the nature of social regulation that is a concomitant of reform.

After a qualitative comparison of the different characteristics an optimum approximation is formulated in general terms. The possibility of finding an exact 'equal ripple' solution is discussed, and an approximate 'equal ripple' solution is offered as an approach to this as yet unsolved mathematical problem. (Author).

McCalley identifies six distinct patterns of power within organizations, arguing that management can and must use all of them creatively and ethically for the organization's benefit. Top-down position power is familiar, but not the only option. McCalley identifies others along with their sources, patterns of development, and common use—often abused—in recognizable management situations. Managers need to use their authority and power to drive the energy of dynamic organizations, asserts McCalley, but they must learn to do it without creating factionalism and conflict, and without subjugating subordinates. Surprising insights into the mystery of why otherwise competent managers often fail are mixed with practical wisdom for executives, teachers, and students who will one day assume positions of power. Among the book's special characteristics is McCalley's comprehensive discussion of the impacts that every type of power, authority, influence, and leadership can have, what their basic sources are, and how their structural and functional effects impact the ability to manage.

Book excerpt: The concept of Functional Patterns is a train of thought that has been building upon itself over the course of my entire lifetime. I was taught at a very young age to question authority and everything around me by my highly skeptical parents. My parents were extremely hard workers who were very resourceful with the little money they had. They lived by the "practice what you preach" motto in every sense they could. The apple didn't fall very far from the tree and I have embodied (to the best of my ability) what I was fortunate enough to be taught at a very young age. The Functional Patterns method didn't start with the memorization of techniques. It started at a base of reasoning that has seemingly been missing from the industry of health today. When ego checking experiences of life mixed with the values I had already wired in from my childhood, a different approach towards looking at the human organism emerged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How patterns--from diagrams of spacetime to particle trails revealed by supercolliders--offer clues to the fundamental workings of the physical world. Our universe might appear chaotic, but deep down it's simply a myriad of rules working independently to create patterns of action, force, and consequence. In Ten Patterns That Explain the Universe, Brian Clegg explores the phenomena that make up the very fabric of our world by examining ten essential sequenced systems. From diagrams that show the deep relationships between space and time to the quantum behaviors that rule the way that matter and light interact, Clegg shows how these patterns provide a unique view of the physical world and its fundamental workings. Guiding readers on a tour of our world and the universe beyond, Clegg describes the cosmic microwave background, sometimes called the "echo of the big bang," and how it offers clues to the universe's beginnings; the diagrams that illustrate Einstein's revelation of the intertwined nature of space and time; the particle trail patterns revealed by the Large Hadron Collider and other accelerators; and the simple-looking patterns that predict quantum behavior (and decorated Richard Feynman's van). Clegg explains how the periodic table reflects the underlying pattern of the configuration of atoms, discusses the power of the number line, demonstrates the explanatory uses of tree diagrams, and more.
