Book excerpt: This fully updated and expanded textbook covers designing working systems at very high frequencies. The updated book includes new chapters on Circuit Board Layout Process and Circuit-Board Attacks and Security and more in-depth material on all the original chapters. As with the first edition, this book combines an intuitive, physics-based approach to electromagnetics with a focus on solving realistic problems. The book emphasizes an intuitive approach to electromagnetics, and then uses this foundation to show the reader how both physical phenomena can cause signals to propagate incorrectly; and how to solve commonly encountered issues. Emphasis is placed on real problems that the author has encountered in his professional career, integrating problem-solving strategies and real signal-integrity case studies throughout the presentation. Students are challenged to think about managing complex design projects and implementing successful engineering and manufacturing processes. For the new edition, the author designed a circuit board that illustrates many of the principles in the book, created instructor materials including PowerPoint slides, a homework bank, and a test bank, and created materials that departments can use for ABET assessment.

Book excerpt: Consistently Design PDNs That Deliver Reliable Performance at the Right Cost Too often, PDN designs work inconsistently, and techniques that work in some scenarios seem to fail inexplicably in others. This book explains why and presents realistic processes for getting PDN designs right in any new product. Drawing on 60+ years of signal and power integrity experience, Larry Smith and Eric Bogatin show how to manage noise and electrical performance, and complement intuition with analysis to balance cost, performance, risk, and schedule. Throughout, they distill the essence of complex real-world problems, quantify core principles via approximation, and apply them to specific examples. For easy usage, dozens of key concepts and observations are highlighted as tips and listed in quick, chapter-ending summaries. Coverage includes • A practical, start-to-finish approach to consistently meeting PDN performance goals • Understanding how signals interact with interconnects • Identifying root causes of common problems, so you can avoid them • Leveraging analysis tools to efficiently explore design space and optimize tradeoffs • Analyzing impedance-related properties of series and parallel RLC circuits • Measuring low impedance for components and entire PDN ecologies • Predicting loop inductance from physical design features • Reducing peak impedances from combinations of capacitors • Understanding power and ground plane properties in the PDN interconnect • Taming signal integrity problems when signals change return planes • Reducing peak impedance created by on-die capacitance and package lead inductance • Controlling transient current waveform interactions with PDN features • Simple spreadsheet-based analysis techniques for quickly creating first-pass designs This guide will be indispensable for all engineers involved in PDN design, including product, board, and chip designers; system, hardware, component, and package engineers; power supply designers, SI and EMI engineers, sales engineers, and their managers.

We don want to waste time reconfiguring our smartphones, fumbling over digital printers, or plodding through online forms while deadlines bear down on us. We want technology that works.€ Yet the harder we try to create simple user experiences, the more we tie ourselves up in knots. We are undermined by demands to cram in more features, or lured into approaches that turn out to be more complex than ever.€ Simplicity is a discipline that can be learned. This book shows you how- ith humor, powerful examples, quotes, and case studies.€ This new edition has been updated to provide fresh advice for teams struggling to satisfy the conflicting demands of their stakeholders; it addresses important trends in technology; and it shows how four simple rules of simplicity can be applied to new and emerging types of interaction.€ More information at: www.simpleandusable.com.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early days of VLSI, the design of the power distribution for an integrated cir cuit was rather simple. Power distribution --the design of the geometric topology for the network of wires that connect the various power supplies, the widths of the indi vidual segments for each of these wires, the number and location of the power I/O pins around the periphery of the chip --was simple because the chips were simpler. Few available wiring layers forced floorplans that allowed simple, planar (non-over lapping) power networks. Lower speeds and circuit density made the choice of the wire widths easier: we made them just fat enough to avoid resistive voltage drops due to switching currents in the supply network. And we just didn't need enormous num bers of power and ground pins on the package for the chips to work. It's not so simple any more. Increased integration has forced us to focus on reliability concerns such as metal elec tromigration, which affects wire sizing decisions in the power network. Extra metal layers have allowed more flexibility in the topological layout of the power networks.
