Book excerpt: Power factor correction (PFC) is a technique of counteracting the undesirable effects of electric loads that create a power factor that is less than one. Power factor correction may be applied either by an electrical power transmission utility to improve the stability and efficiency of the transmission network or correction may be installed by individual electrical customers to reduce the costs charged to them by their electricity supplier. In order to improve transmission efficiency, power factor correction research has become a hot topic. Many control methods for the power factor correction (PFC) have been proposed. This research work describes the effect of combination of loads on power factor of microcontroller based power system and also described the design and analysis of a power factor correction using PIC microcontroller chip. This involves measuring the power factor value from the load using PIC and proper algorithm to determine the sufficient firing angle to trigger the TRIAC in order to compensate excessive reactive components, thus bringing power factor near to unity. In this research work, four experiments were conducted.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the power quality of the ac system has become great concern due to the rapidly increased numbers of electronic equipment, power electronics and high voltage power system. Most of the commercial and industrial installation in the country has large electrical loads which are severally inductive in nature causing lagging power factor which gives heavy penalties to consumer by electricity board. This situation is taken care by PFC. PFC is the capacity of absorbing the reactive power produced by a load. In case of fixed loads, this can be done manually by switching of capacitors, however in case of rapidly varying and scattered loads it becomes difficult to maintain a high power factor by manually switching on/off the capacitors in proportion to variation of load within an installation. This drawback is overcome by using an Automatic Power Factor Correction panel. This book focuses on the design and implementation of power factor correction using PIC micro-controller chip, determine the power factor of the loaded power system, and generate proper action to calculate and to add sufficient capacitor.

The price of gasoline more getting higher every year, this also make the life cost for each family increase. The price of electricity also increases because of the increase gasoline price. The people should spend their money with efficiently to make sure that the money that they spend is totally useful. There have two methods to save the electricity usage; the first one is using the electricity energy with smart, for example when the air-conditioner is not used it should turn off. The second is using the power factor correction technique, but this method just for inductive load such as air-conditioner, washing machine and refrigerator. The inductive load running causes the leading power factor, means the current that used is more and not totally used. To overcome this problem the reactive component is added, the capacitor is added to improve the power factor and also reduce the current that transfer to the inductive load. The microcontroller (PIC) is use as a control element that switching the capacitor to the power line. The sensor is place at the power line to giving the signal to the microcontroller, microcontroller analyze the signal that feed from the sensor. Microcontroller execute the instruction depend to the signal that giving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now day, power factor is very important in electrical system. Power factor means defined as the ratio of the real power over apparent power. It is a measure of how efficiently electrical power is converted into useful work output. Low power factor is expensive, inefficient and waste power. It is because reduces an electrical system's distribution capacity by increasing current flow and causing voltage drops. Normally in industry, they have system capacitor bank to improve power factor. But in house we don't have the system capacitor bank. The project is power factor corrector. This project focuses to need improve power factor for application in home. The objective the project is reducing usage current. In this project, a Microcontroller PIC 16F877A will be used as a brain of the system that will control the system through a PIC Basis programming. The PIC Basic Programming will be developed to control when capacitor can turn on. Input of the Microcontroller is a current transducer. Function of the current transducer to read the current from line. The current transducer can convert 5A to 5 mA. The maximum value can read of current transducer is 5A. We use current transducer because Microcontroller very sensitive device. It only can read voltage from 0V to 5V. When give value greater than 5V to Microcontroller, it can make Microcontroller burnt. When the Microcontroller senses certain current, it will give signal to output to turn on the capacitor. Function of the capacitor to improve level power factor. The benefit improve power factor is reduce of electricity bills, increased electrical system capacity and voltage drop at the point of use will be reduced. -Author.

Book excerpt: This research work presents a novel technique of Optimized and Cost Effective Power Management System (OCEPMS) for domestic users. The technique incorporates all the three important aspects of an Optimized and Cost Effective Power Management System and gives a complete microcontroller based low cost solution. These aspects include: power factor improvement, voltage optimization and surge / spike suppression. For power factor improvement, an algorithm is devised which automatically switches capacitors based on real time calculated requirements. A soft switching mechanism is used for the purpose of bringing capacitors in or out of the circuit depending upon the overall inductive load. For voltage optimization purpose, a circuitry is included in the design which manages incoming voltage and regulates it to a level more suitable for home appliances. Furthermore, to protect the system from dangerous and harmful surges and spikes transmitted through supply line, a surge suppression circuitry is also incorporated in the design. The proposed design is physically developed and experimentally tested with various domestic loads like compact florescent lamps, chokes, pumps.

A smart grid is an essential part of any smart city as both consumers and power utility companies benefit from the features provided by the power grid. In addition to advanced features presented by smart grids, there may also be a risk when the grids are exposed to malicious acts such as security attacks performed by terrorists. Many vendors develop smart meters and at the same time, many researchers have proposed various supported security systems, however, no security measures were considered in most of those designs. This book presents a security study for smart metering systems with a prototype implementation for future works.

The applications for power LEDs include traffic lights, street lamps, automotive lighting, architectural lights, theatre lighting, household light replacements, signage lighting (replacing neon strip lights and fluorescent tubes), LCD display backlighting, and many more. Powering (driving) these LED's is not always simple. Linear driving is inefficient and generates far too much heat. With a switching supply, the main issues are EMI, efficiency, and of course cost. This book covers the design trade-offs involved in LED driving applications, from low-power, to UB-LEDs and beyond. Provides a practical, hands-on approach to power supply design for LED drivers Contains detailed examples of what works throughout the design process Presents commentary on how the calculated component value compares with the actual value used, including a description of why the choice was made

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear explanation of the technology for producing and delivering electricity Electric Power Systems explains and illustrates how the electric grid works in a clear, straightforward style that makes highly technical material accessible. It begins with a thorough discussion of the underlying physical concepts of electricity, circuits, and complex power that serves as a foundation for more advanced material. Readers are then introduced to the main components of electric power systems, including generators, motors and other appliances, and transmission and distribution equipment such as power lines, transformers, and circuit breakers. The author explains how a whole power system is managed and coordinated, analyzed mathematically, and kept stable and reliable. Recognizing the economic and environmental implications of electric energy production and public concern over disruptions of service, this book exposes the challenges of producing and delivering electricity to help inform public policy decisions. Its discussions of complex concepts such as reactive power balance, load flow, and stability analysis, for example, offer deep insight into the complexity of electric grid operation and demonstrate how and why physics constrains economics and politics. Although this survival guide includes mathematical equations and formulas, it discusses their meaning in plain English and does not assume any prior familiarity with particular notations or technical jargon. Additional features include: * A glossary of symbols, units, abbreviations, and acronyms * Illustrations that help readers visualize processes and better understand complex concepts * Detailed analysis of a case study, including a Web reference to the case, enabling readers to test the consequences of manipulating various parameters With its clear discussion of how electric grids work, Electric Power Systems is appropriate for a broad readership of professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, government agency managers, environmental advocates, and consumers.
