Book Synopsis Characteristics of Ion Bernstein Wave Heating in JIPPT-II-U Tokamak by :
Download or read book Characteristics of Ion Bernstein Wave Heating in JIPPT-II-U Tokamak written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a transport code combined with an ion Bernstein wave tokamak ray tracing code, a modelling code for the ion Bernstein wave heating has been developed. Using this code, the ion Bernstein wave heating experiment on the JIPPT-II-U tokamak has been analyzed. It is assumed that the resonance layer is formed by the third harmonic of deuterium-like ions, such as fully ionized carbon, and oxygen ions near the plasma center. For wave absorption mechanisms, electron Landau damping, ion cyclotron harmonic damping, and collisional damping are considered. The characteristics of the ion Bernstein wave heating experiment, such as the ion temperature increase, the strong dependence of the quality factor on the magnetic field strength, and the dependence of the ion temperature increment on the input power, are well reproduced.

Book Synopsis Effects of High Power Ion Bernstein Waves on a Tokamak Plasma by :
Download or read book Effects of High Power Ion Bernstein Waves on a Tokamak Plasma written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion Bernstein wave heating (IBWH) has been investigated on PLT with up to 650 kW of rf power coupled to the plasma, exceeding the ohmic power of 550 kW. Plasma antenna loading of 2 .cap omega. has been observed, resulting in 80 to 90% of the rf power being coupled to the plasma. An ion heating efficiency of .delta. T/sub i/(0)n/sub e//P/sub rf/ = 6 x 1013 eV cm−3/kW, without high energy tail ions, has been observed up to the maximum rf power. The deuterium particle confinement during high power IBWH increases significantly (as much as 300%). Associated with it, a longer injected impurity confinement time, reduced drift wave turbulence activity, frequency shifts of drfit wave turbulence, and development of a large negative edge potential were observed. The energy confinement time, however, shows some degradation from the ohmic value, which can be attributed to the enhanced radiation loss observed during IBWH. The ion heating and energy confinement time are relatively independent of plasma current.

Book Synopsis Lower-hybrid-heating Experiments on the Alcator C and the Versator II Tokamaks by :
Download or read book Lower-hybrid-heating Experiments on the Alcator C and the Versator II Tokamaks written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initial results are reported from lower hybrid wave heating experiments carried out on the MIT Alcator C and Versator II tokamaks. In the Alcator C experiments a 4 waveguide array, with internally brazed ceramic windows has been used to inject 160 kW of microwave power at 4.6 GHz into the plasma with n0 less than or equal to 1 x 1015 cm−3, and B0 less than or equal to 12 T. An RF power density of 8 kW/cm2 has been transmitted into the plasma without RF breakdown. RF coupling studies show optimal coupling (R less than or equal to 10%) when the local density at the waveguide mouth is 25 to 50 times overdense. Initial heating experiments show an ion tail formation in hydrogen discharge peaking at a density of anti n approx. = 2.7 x 1014 cm−3 at B = 8.9 T, and bulk ion heating at a density of anti n approx. = 1.5 x 1014 c−3 at B approx. = 11 T. Evidence of RF current enhancement has been observed at a density of n approx. = 3 x 1013 cm−3. In the Versator II tokamak initial ion heating studies have been carried out using an 800 MHz, 140 kW klystron. With 50 kW of net RF power injected through a 4 waveguide grill at B = 1.3 T and anti n = 2.5 x 1013 cm−3, Doppler broadening of the OVII and NVI lines shows a .delta.T/sub i/ = 50 eV rise in the bulk ion temperature. A significant RF produced ion tail is also observed by charge exchange analysis. We have succeeded in combining a toroidal ray-tracing code and a 1-D transport code to study the heating density bands and heating efficiencies.
Book Synopsis Edge Ion Heating and Parametric Decay During Injection of Ion Cyclotron Resonance Frequency Power on the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak by : Jon Christian Rost
Download or read book Edge Ion Heating and Parametric Decay During Injection of Ion Cyclotron Resonance Frequency Power on the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak written by Jon Christian Rost and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A population of suprathermal ions has been observed in the scrape-off layer during injection of power in the ion cyclotron frequency range on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. These ions generated energetic neutrals measured with a charge-exchange neutral particle analyzer. In the hydrogen minority heating regime, fast particles were generated only when the injected power was above 500kW. Fast particles were observed at a low level of injected power when the frequency was a multiple of the ion cyclotron frequency in the scrape-off layer. The power deposited in the edge was always less than a few percent of the injected power and did not increase impurity levels. The theoretical threshold of parametric decay instabilities for decay of the pump wave in the antenna near field into an ion Bernstein wave and an ion cyclotron quasimode matches the observed threshold for fast ion production under a variety of conditions.
