Book Synopsis Critical Needs for Research in Veterinary Science by : National Research Council
Download or read book Critical Needs for Research in Veterinary Science written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in veterinary science is critical for the health and well-being of animals, including humans. Food safety, emerging infectious diseases, the development of new therapies, and the possibility of bioterrorism are examples of issues addressed by veterinary science that have an impact on both human and animal health. However, there is a lack of scientists engaged in veterinary research. Too few veterinarians pursue research careers, and there is a shortage of facilities and funding for conducting research. This report identifies questions and issues that veterinary research can help to address, and discusses the scientific expertise and infrastructure needed to meet the most critical research needs. The report finds that there is an urgent need to provide adequate resources for investigators, training programs, and facilities involved in veterinary research.

Book Synopsis Veterinary Medicine by : Pamela Hunter
Download or read book Veterinary Medicine written by Pamela Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veterinary medicine has long been recognized as one of the more neglected areas of medical history. One of the main stumbling blocks to research is the lack of comprehensive information regarding the survival and availability of primary source material. Veterinary Medicine: A Guide to Historical Sources redresses these issues for the first time, offering researchers an unparalleled tool with which to approach the subject. The book opens with a brief history of veterinary medicine and the veterinary profession from the fourteenth to the beginning of the twenty first centuries, identifying the key dates and events that shaped their development. There then follows a chapter on the nature and uses of the records covered by the book, outlining the types of records found, the type of information they contain and their likely uses by different types of researcher. A brief user's guide then explains how to use the book. After these preliminary sections, comes the main body of the book, the lists of records. It is here that the various practices and institutions covered by the book are listed, together with the types of records they hold, the dates they cover and where they are kept. A short biographical history is also included with each entry where appropriate. Taken as a whole this volume will prove to be an invaluable aid for any scholar, researching the history of veterinary medicine in Britain.
Download or read book Marek’s Disease written by L.N. Payne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a disease of complex pathology with inflammatory and neoplastic features, which affects lymphoid and neural tissues, belonging to a disease group which killed one chicken in five, and which defied efforts to understand and control it for !lOre than 50 years, and one can begin to appreciate the interest Marek's disease has received. Canpound these characteristics with the finding of the causal herpesvirus, its recog nition as the neoplasm first discovered to be so caused, and its pre vention by vaccination, and the special place of Marek's disease in veterinary medicine and comparative oncology becomes clear. This book sets out to provide an authoritative and corrprehensive account of knowledge of Marek's disease and its control. I hope that it will be of value to veterinary research workers, teachers and students who need information about the disease, to veterinarians, poultrymen and vaccine manufacturers who have to diagnose and control it, and to oncologists in other fields interested in comparative aspects. other reviews of the disease exist, of course, but this is the first multi authored book devoted to the subject.

This book compares and contrasts alternative housing with conventional and traditional systems for commercial poultry (laying hens, meat chickens, turkeys, waterfowl and gamebirds) with regards to welfare, disease, health, nutrition, sustainability and genotype-environment interaction. It is suitable for researchers and students in poultry science. .
Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition by : W. Haresign
Download or read book Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition written by W. Haresign and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition — 1985 focuses on the different compositions of animal feeds. The book first discusses the prediction of energy value of compound seeds. Existing methods for the prediction of metabolizable energy (ME) or digestible energy (DE) from chemical composition; poultry and pig compound feeds; ruminant compound feeds; and technical and analytical variation in the chemical composition of compound feeds are described. The text also looks at the fiber content of animal feeds, the influence of fiber on digestibility of poultry feeds, and the role of dietary fiber in pig diets. The book highlights the effect of fiber in compound feeds on the performance of ruminants. Feed intake and rumen fermentation; digestibility and energetic feeding value; and milk production and composition are considered. The text also discusses the response of pregnant animals to protein and energy intake. The book also underscores developments on anticoccidial agents for poultry. The effect of coccidiosis on growth rate and feed conversion efficiency; development of resistance to anticoccidiosis products; and continual use of ionophore anticoccidial products are considered. The text also discusses eggshell formation and quality, seasonal variation of appetite in ruminants, and photoperiodic influences on milk production in dairy cows. The book is valuable for readers interested in studying the varying compositions of animal feeds.
