Book excerpt: Neurovascular disorders are a group of pathological conditions resulting from the neurovascular injury. Neurovascular disorders include cerebral ischemia, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, venous sinus thrombosis, glioma, carotid disease, cerebral small vessel disease, and vascular dementia, among others. Although we have accumulated more understanding of both the genetic links and the basic mechanisms behind the pathophysiology of neurovascular diseases over the years, the exact mechanisms are still unclear. Therefore, there is an urgency to identify important therapeutic targets.

Book excerpt: Biomarkers, or biological markers, are quantitative measurements that offer researchers and clinicians valuable insight into diagnosis, treatment and prognosis for many disorders and diseases. A major goal in neuroscience medical research is establishing biomarkers for disorders of the nervous system. Given the promising potential and necessity for neuroscience biomarkers, the Institute of Medicine Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders convened a public workshop and released the workshop summary entitled Neuroscience Biomarkers and Biosignatures: Converging Technologies, Emerging Partnerships. The workshop brought together experts from multiple areas to discuss the most promising and practical arenas in neuroscience in which biomarkers will have the greatest impact. The main objective of the workshop was to identify and discuss biomarker targets that are not currently being aggressively pursued but that could have the greatest near-term impact on the rate at which new treatments are brought forward for psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume provides a state-of-the-art perspective on methodological considerations in the use of biological markers in epidemiologic studies. The text discusses the use of biological markers for evaluation, biological responses, biologically effective dosage, internal dose, and susceptibility; methodological issues such as classification, sensitivity, stability, variability, and confounding variables are thoroughly examined. The characteristics of several specific classes of markers, such as sister-chromatid-exchange, protein and DNA adducts, micronuclei, urine mutagenicity assays, chromosome aberrations and oncogenes are described. Markers of susceptibility such as N-acetyltransferase are also discussed. Effective sample collection procedures, sensitive and specific assays for detection of the marker in the medium of choice are given careful consideration, as are the methodological issues applicable to epidemiologic studies.

This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glutamate is the most pervasive neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS). Despite this fact, no validated biological markers, or biomarkers, currently exist for measuring glutamate pathology in CNS disorders or injuries. Glutamate dysfunction has been associated with an extensive range of nervous system diseases and disorders. Problems with how the neurotransmitter glutamate functions in the brain have been linked to a wide variety of disorders, including schizophrenia, Alzheimer's, substance abuse, and traumatic brain injury. These conditions are widespread, affecting a large portion of the United States population, and remain difficult to treat. Efforts to understand, treat, and prevent glutamate-related disorders can be aided by the identification of valid biomarkers. The Institute of Medicine's Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders held a workshop on June 21-22, 2010, to explore ways to accelerate the development, validation, and implementation of such biomarkers. Glutamate-Related Biomarkers in Drug Development for Disorders of the Nervous System: Workshop Summary investigates promising current and emerging technologies, and outlines strategies to procure resources and tools to advance drug development for associated nervous system disorders. Moreover, this report highlights presentations by expert panelists, and the open panel discussions that occurred during the workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the success of Volume I of this Research Topic, we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume II: “The Alzheimer's Disease Challenge”. The repeated failure of clinical trials on the amyloid-based medications and the pessimistic calculations of Alzheimer's disease cost burden for the next few decades present a severe challenge to humankind with severe social implications. In recent years, several alternative diagnostic and treatment procedures have been presented to treat and manage Alzheimer’s disease as it has been nearly impossible to suggest a holistic solution. Several revelations in human biology have highlighted the multiparametric character of the disease. Besides the amyloid aggregation and neurofibrillary tangles that result in Aβ toxicity and tau phosphorylation, processes such as Gene Mutations, Proteins Misfolding, Brain Biochemical and Histopathological Changes, Behavioral Changes, Nutrition and Metabolism Alterations, and Autonomic Dysfunctions due to Central Nervous System dysregulations are common signs and probably early diagnostic biomarkers in most of the Alzheimer's classification categories.
