Book excerpt: Research suggests that college students suffer higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) than older adults, with between 30 and 60 percent experiencing one or more violent events by their intimates (O'Hearn & Margolin, 2000). Unfortunately, IPV can result in severe psychological complications, including depression, anxiety, problems with interpersonal relationships, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and shame (Coker et al., 2002; Coker et al., 2003; Kaura & Lohman, 2007; Taylor, 2003). However, research indicates that certain religious and general coping styles and social support can serve as resilience factors, buffering victims from the negative consequences of IPV (Bosch & Schumm, 2004; Coker et al., 2002; Haden et al., 2006; Ellison & Anderson, 2001). Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that individuals can learn from adversity and grow in the aftermath of trauma (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004). Unfortunately, much of the current research exploring aspects of IPV has focused primarily on the negative consequences of IPV for women (Coker, Watkins, Smith, & Brandt, 2003). There is also little research that explores the role of coping in the development of posttraumatic growth and shame for survivors of IPV. Consequently, this research project quantitatively explored the influence of IPV and the roles of social support and coping styles in the development of posttraumatic stress, shame, and posttraumatic growth for female students at The University of Montana.

Book excerpt: The relationship between the experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) and the development of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been well-established in the literature (Basile, Arias, Desai, & Thompson, 2004; Coker, Smith, Thompson, McKeown, Bethea, & Davis, 2002). However, researchers have called for more complex statistical models capable of identifying and analyzing the pathways potentially linking IPV and PTSD. Research indicates that IPV victims report lower levels of perceived social support than non-IPV victims (Bengtsson-Tops & Tops, 2007) and that, as a result, victims are at greater risk of developing PTSD (Ozer, Best, Lipsey, & Weiss, 2008). Drawing from the stress buffering hypothesis (Cohen & Willis, 1985), which states that social support acts as a buffer, protecting an individual from the negative effects of a stressful event, the current study analyzed the moderating role of perceived social support in the relationship between IPV and PTSD. It was hypothesized that the positive relationship between IPV and PTSD would be stronger among individuals perceiving lower social support. It was also hypothesized that characterological self-blame and self-esteem would mediate the moderator effect of perceived social support. The hypotheses were tested by distributing questionnaires to 132 adult female participants recruited at a substance abuse treatment facility and a private university. The results indicated that IPV was positively associated with PTSD, and perceived social support negatively predicted PTSD. Further, perceived social support moderated the positive relationship between IPV and PTSD. At the extreme levels of perceived social support, the positive relationship between IPV and PTSD was stronger among individuals perceiving low levels of social support than among those perceiving high levels of social support. However, at the moderate levels of perceived social support, the positive relationship between IPV and PTSD was stronger among individuals perceiving high levels of social support than among those perceiving low levels of social support. Lastly, the results showed that self-esteem mediated the observed moderator effect of perceived social support. Possible explanations for the apparent shift in the direction of the moderation as well as the clinical implications of the findings, limitations of the current study, and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: One hundred twenty nine survivors of interpersonal violence completed a paper-and-pencil survey to evaluate depression, PTSD, forgiveness, meaning in life, and spirituality. Five self-report measures were completed including: the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale, the PTSD Checklist – Stressor Specific version, the Transgression-Related Interpersonal Motivations Inventory, and the Spiritual Involvement and Beliefs Scale. The majority of the participants were female and Caucasian. Significant correlations were found between PTSD and presence of meaning, as well as depression and both presence of and search for meaning. However, hierarchical multiple regressions results indicated that depression and the two meaning in life subscales contributed a negligible increment of explained variance in PTSD severity. Additionally, neither the interaction between depression and search for meaning nor between depression and presence of meaning interactions was significant. Results suggest that there is no evidence that depression moderates the effects of meaning in life in the prediction of PTSD levels among this sample of victims of IPV.
