Book excerpt: Discover the true meaning of being brave in this tender and whimsical picture book from Daniel Bernstrom (One Day in the Eucalytus, Eucalyptus Tree) and Shane Evans (Chocolate Me!) that follows a grandfather and grandson who travel through time in a beloved 1952 Ford. A little boy who lives with his grandpa isn't reprimanded for being afraid to go to school one day. Instead, Big Papa takes him away in his time machine--a 1952 Ford--back to all of the times when he, himself, was scared of something life was handing him. Full of heartfelt moments and thrilling magical realism, Big Papa and the Time Machine speaks to the African American experience in a touching dialogue between two family members from different generations, and emerges as a voice that shares history and asks questions about one family's experience in 20th-century black America. "Wasn't you scared?" "Oh, I was scared," Big Papa said. "Sometimes you gotta walk with giants if you ever gonna know what you made of. That's called being brave."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not since The Diary of Anne Frank has there been such a book as this: The joyful but ultimately heartbreaking journal of a young Jewish woman in occupied Paris, now being published for the first time, 63 years after her death in a Nazi concentration camp. On April 7, 1942, Hélène Berr, a 21-year-old Jewish student of English literature at the Sorbonne, took up her pen and started to keep a journal, writing with verve and style about her everyday life in Paris — about her studies, her friends, her growing affection for the “boy with the grey eyes,” about the sun in the dewdrops, and about the effect of the growing restrictions imposed by France’s Nazi occupiers. Berr brought a keen literary sensibility to her writing, a talent that renders the story it relates all the more rich, all the more heartbreaking. The first day Berr has to wear the yellow star on her coat, she writes, “I held my head high and looked people so straight in the eye they turned away. But it’s hard.” More, many more, humiliations were to follow, which she records, now with a view to posterity. She wants the journal to go to her fiancé, who has enrolled with the Free French Forces, as she knows she may not live much longer. She was right. The final entry is dated February 15, 1944, and ends with the chilling words: “Horror! Horror! Horror!” Berr and her family were arrested three weeks later. She went — as was discovered later — on the death march from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen, where she died of typhus in April 1945, within a month of Anne Frank and just days before the liberation of the camp. The journal did eventually reach her fiancé, and for over fifty years it was kept private. In 2002, it was donated to the Memorial of the Shoah in Paris. Before it was first published in France in January 2008, translation rights had already been sold for twelve languages.

From the opening line of the book, "When you're a kid, they don't always tell you the truth," the stage is set for this riveting coming-of-age story that plays out against the backdrop of the Korean War, the aftermath of the Holocaust, the polio epidemic, the relocation of a baseball team, and the shenanigans of politicians and businessmen. Hirshberg deftly weaves together events, characters, and clues and creates a rich tapestry of betrayal, persecution, death, loyalty, and unconditional love that resonates with today's America.

After that the exciting story of Alfie and the Moonshiners. Next came And the Rest of Alfies Story. I really thought that was the rest of the story. It wasnt. Now we have these tales, beginning with Papas Missing Toe, and ending with Tis a Mark of Distinction. There is not a dull moment in between these two fascinating pictures of Papas role in the lives of his four boys. Willie is the oldest, the ring leader in all their mischief, and the embodiment of primogeniture because Margaret died. There is Cliff. Granma characterized him when she said Give that boy a wheel and he will roll it off the edge of the world. And Junior is Alfies nemesis; he is just enough bigger than Alfie to taunt him, and not bigger enough to control him. Lastly, there is Alfie, the Baby, impulsive, irrepressible and curious beyond belief. But always the Baby until the arrival of Jody, ten years late for this book of Alfie tales.

Book excerpt: Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw's Papa Brings Me the World is a poignant picture book that celebrates the bond between parent and child, and follows their long-distance trip around the world. Most parents drive a car or ride a bus or train to work—but not Lulu’s papa. He navigates mountains, deserts, and oceans, each time returning home with pockets full of treasures. There’s an ancient calculator from China, a musical mbira from Zimbabwe, and a special game from Sumatra. But the best treasures are special stories Papa tells when he comes home—tales of playing peekaboo with rare birds in the Andes and befriending dragons in the Irish Sea. This long-distance love story between parent and child celebrates inclusivity, imagination, and the richness of global cultures. Christy Ottaviano Books

Book excerpt: Paul Cook- historian, author of Siege at the White House and European resident for many years has written the first bombshell of a World War II series that is destined to become a classic. Partially based on personal experiences, declassified secret documents and historical research that is guaranteed to upset the status quo, Mr. Cook takes us back to Germany of the late 1960s to when he was a member of the United States Air Force and met a young German woman. As Paul becomes more involved with his new love and her family, he discovers a secret from her father that he carries until now. Adolf Hitler survived the war and fooled the Soviets concerning his proposed suicide. Included with his story of why Mr. Cook has sit on this explosive powder keg of information for so many decades are the first four interviews with the onetime German head of state smuggled out of Europe. Some of the startling revelations by the former Fuhrer are: How he faked his suicide and where did he escape to in 1945? His post war revelations of Himmler, Goering, Hess, Churchill, FDR, Eisenhower, Truman and JFK that are very enlightening and prophetic. He tells us what really happened to the Hindenburg and it is not what you thought. His comments on the Holocaust and Jews in general as well as revealing American Communist spies in high places are just a few of the more than eighty explosive topics covered. This is war, as you have never imagined. It is filled with romance, hate, murder, political intrigue and international high drama and that is before you get to the interviews with Hitler. The Last Interviews with Hitler: 1961 Vol. I is a book that the victors of WWII never wanted published. Erase what you have learned about World War II, for this thriller gives you enough thought provoking exciting twists and turns to last a lifetime.

Book excerpt: "Epic in scope, but gentle and charming in delivery, Fred Amram's We're in America Now is a quiet chronicle of a clamorous era. Politics and war compel Amram's family to leave the only home they ever knew and embark on a personal exodus, fleeing a new pharaoh, pursuing a new promised land. They arrive in America to discover that paradise is not all milk and honey, but love, loyalty, and faith conspire to hold the family together, and the story of how they rebuild the life that was robbed them is moving, probing, and insightful." —J.C. Hallman, author of B & Me: A True Story of Literary Arousal These compelling stories form a riveting memoir that begins with the author's birth during the rise of Hitler in 1930s Germany. He and his surviving family soon escape to Holland and sail to America where they encounter many challenges as immigrants in a new world. This country truly becomes a land of opportunity where one can build a new life and become more than a "Holocaust survivor." Fred Amram is a retired University of Minnesota professor of communication and creativity. He spent his early years in Hanover, Germany, where he experienced the Holocaust from its inception in 1933. He witnessed Kristallnacht and the Gestapo invading his home. He watched the British bombers from his balcony when Jews were banned from air raid shelters. The loss of uncles, aunts, a grandmother, and many more relatives has motivated him to share his experiences in hopes of ending genocide everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully crafted novel about the tragic effects of a devastating childhood. “There was a child in our courtyard. I saw a child there, standing by the fountain. She was there, then she was gone.” On the death of the celebrated photographer Max Hollingbourne, his daughter, Ruthie, returns to his villa in Greece after fifteen years in exile. The youngest and estranged member of a once close-knit London family, Ruthie is haunted by a dark secret from her childhood, one that fractured her family and drove her mother to madness. Still, following her father’s death, she and her older sister, Vinny, manage to build a fragile happiness at the villa where they had spent their summers as girls. But the arrival of an English family at a neighboring cottage, and the presence of one young girl in particular, trigger a chain of events that will plunge both women back into their harrowing pasts with shocking and fatal consequences. Haunting, lyrical, and beautifully crafted, Silver and Salt is a profoundly moving novel about the consequences of love and betrayal.
