Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses domestic political support for internationalist foreign policy by analyzing the motivations of members of Congress on key foreign policy issues. It includes case studies on major foreign policy debates in recent years, including the use of force, foreign aid, trade policy and U.S.-Russia relations. It also develops a new series of archetypes for describing the foreign policy worldviews of members of the 115th Congress to replace the current stale and unsophisticated labels of internationalist, isolationist, hawk and dove. Report findings emphasize areas of bipartisan cooperation on foreign policy issues given member ideologies.
Book Synopsis Configuring the Networked Self by : Julie E. Cohen
Download or read book Configuring the Networked Self written by Julie E. Cohen and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legal and technical rules governing flows of information are out of balance, argues Julie E. Cohen in this original analysis of information law and policy. Flows of cultural and technical information are overly restricted, while flows of personal information often are not restricted at all. The author investigates the institutional forces shaping the emerging information society and the contradictions between those forces and the ways that people use information and information technologies in their everyday lives. She then proposes legal principles to ensure that people have ample room for cultural and material participation as well as greater control over the boundary conditions that govern flows of information to, from, and about them.

Book Synopsis Intelligence Power in Peace and War by : Michael Herman
Download or read book Intelligence Power in Peace and War written by Michael Herman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-10-13 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligence services form an important but controversial part of the modern state. Drawing mainly on British and American examples, this book provides an analytic framework for understanding the 'intelligence community' and assessing its value. The author, a former senior British intelligence officer, describes intelligence activities, the purposes which the system serves, and the causes and effects of its secrecy. He considers 'intelligence failure' and how organisation and management can improve the chances of success. Using parallels with the information society and the current search for efficiency in public administration as a whole, the book explores the issues involved in deciding how much intelligence is needed and discusses the kinds of management necessary. In his conclusions Michael Herman discusses intelligence's national value in the post-Cold War world. He also argues that it has important contributions to make to international security, but that its threat-inducing activities should be kept in check.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we can hardly imagine life in Europe without roads and theautomobiles that move people and goods around. In fact, the vastmajority of movement in Europe takes place on the road. Travelersuse the car to explore parts of the continent on their holidays, and goods travel large distances to reach consumers. Indeed, thetwentieth century has deservedly been characteried as the centuryof the car. The situation looked very different around 1900.People crossing national borders by car encountered multiplehurdles on their way. Technically, they imported their vehicleinto a neighboring country and had to pay astronomic importduties. Often they needed to pass a driving test in each countrythey visited. Early on, automobile and touring clubs sought tomake life easier for traveling motorists.International negotiations tackled the problems arising fromdiffering regulations. The resulting volume describes everythingfrom the standardied traffic signs that saved human lives on theroad to the Europabus taking tourists from Stockholm to Romein the 1950s. Driving Europe offers a highly original portrait of aEurope built on roads in the course of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis George W Bush Presidency by : Meenekshi Bose
Download or read book George W Bush Presidency written by Meenekshi Bose and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While candidate George W. Bush promised a humble foreign policy, after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks President Bush implemented a highly ambitious and controversial foreign policy agenda. Examining the contentious decision to invade Iraq, the expansion of presidential power in foreign affairs, the apparent unilateralism that challenged established international norms, and the ideological underpinnings of Bushs foreign policy, many articles in this collection demonstrate why the administration proved to be so divisive domestically and internationally. However, other pieces in the collection show the Bush administration pursued more conventional approaches to certain international issues, such as the rising power of China and a nuclear North Korea. This collection thus both challenges some conventional views of Bushs foreign policy and provides a deeper understanding of why George W. Bush is viewed as one of the most controversial foreign policy presidents of the modern era.
