Peninsular bighorns were federally designated as an Endangered species after a severe population decline occurred, likely caused by a combination of factors including fragmentation, urban development and exposure to disease. A better understanding of bighorn sheep habitat needs can lead to more comprehensive and beneficial protection. The neonate stage of any mammal's life is one of its most vulnerable times. Research has shown that many ungulate species exhibit strategies to reduce predation during the pre-partum period. The primary predator of Peninsular bighorn sheep is the mountain lion (Puma concolor), predation is responsible for up to approximately 60% of sheep deaths. Many ewe groups in the Peninsular bighorn population divide their time between two locations throughout the year referred to as the pre-partum and post-partum periods. Ewe groups are formed based on availability of other females rather than relatedness (Boyce et al. 1999, Festa-Bianchet 1991). While ewe groups spend the majority of their time in pre-partum regions, they move to a post-partum location for a few months. The objective of this study was to quantitatively describe and compare habitat characteristics to find which might be of key importance to Peninsular bighorn ewes during the post-partum period. The habitat characteristics examined in this study were aspect, elevation, percent slope, and distance to alluvial fans, distance to predator corridors, and distance to water sources. The habitat characteristics were compared between locations collected using Global Positioning System collar data during 30-day windows during the pre-partum period (October) and presumed (actual lambing locations not typically known) post-partum period (March). Twenty-eight ewes were studied from 2009-2017 from four ewe groups, In-Ko-Pah (IKP), Carrizo Canyon (Carr), Coyote canyon (CoC) and the South San Ysidro Mountains (SSYM). Differences in habitat use between pre-partum (October) and post-partum (March) period for each of the habitat characteristics was modeled using mixed effects logistic regression for each group, with the ID of each ewe used as a random effect to account for repeated measurements. Standardized logistic regression coefficients (SLRC) and differences in mean between periods were used for interpretive purposes (pre-partum period means are x̅2 and post-partum means are x̅1 in all comparisons). Ewes moved further from water (Carr mean = 11,671 m, SLRC = 3.5; CoC mean = 5,476 m, SLRC =-12.4; IKP-A = mean 1,049 m, SLRC= -0.8) and predator corridors (Carr mean = 10,359 m, SLRC = -3.4; CoC mean= 4,607 m, SLRC= -11.0; IKP-A mean = 409 m, SLRC=-0.7), while moving closer to alluvial fans (Carr mean = 391 m, SLRC= 1.0; CoC mean = 370 m, SLRC= 0.8; IKP-A mean = 561 m, SLRC= 1.0) when choosing postnatal sites in three of the four ewe groups. Ewes also moved to post-partum regions with lower elevation in two out of the four groups (Carr mean = 92 m, FE= 0.8; IKP-A mean = 92 m, FE = 0.8). One group in particular, from the In-Ko-Pah area, had additional data, known lambing dates and locations. The location data from this group was additionally analyzed by comparing the 30-day October window to a 30-day period directly after the known lambing date (unique to each ewe). Both methods for the IKP group (30-day locations from presumed pot-partum vs. actual post-partum period) shared the same trends for elevation, distance to water, distance to predator corridors, and distance to alluvial fans, supporting the validity of comparing data from October to March in other areas, and demonstrating the importance of these factors to site use by ewes. This study showed Peninsular bighorn ewes select post-natal sites based on habitat characteristics and further that traits chosen could be to deter predators and increase neonatal survivorship.

Book excerpt: The status of wild sheep in North America typifies the plight of many wildlife species in modern times: wild sheep have declined to 10-40% of their numbers during pristine times and on a global scale approximately 31% of Caprine are considered threatened or critical. As human populations and the number of threatened and endangered wildlife species increase, research into the causes of wildlife population declines and tools to aid recovery are urgently needed. We conducted two studies of endangered desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) in the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California with the primary goal of furthering recovery efforts for this species. First, in order to evaluate a captive breeding program for Peninsular bighorn, we developed the following criteria to provide a standard means of evaluating ongoing captive breeding and reintroduction programs: (1) survival and recruitment rates in the captive population, (2) survival of released animals, (3) recruitment of released animals, (4) growth rate of the reintroduced or augmented population, and (5) establishment of a viable wild population. In assessing the Peninsular bighorn sheep program, we found that while reintroduction did not result in population growth or establishment of a viable population, it helped prevent extirpation of the reinforced deme, preserved metapopulation linkage, and aided habitat preservation. Chronic low recruitment and low adult survivorship precluded achievement of criteria 3-5. Environmental conditions in the release area also appeared to hinder program success. We suggest that periodic evaluations are useful for improving the success of individual captive breeding and reintroduction programs, as well as for meta-analyses needed to refine reintroduction science as a recovery tool for threatened or endangered populations. Wildlife habituated to the presence of humans have been recognized as a new dilemma facing wildlife managers. Our second study involved examining the habitat use, home range size, and nutritional levels of Peninsular desert bighorn sheep along an urbanwildland interface during two time periods (1981-82 and 1995-98). Book excerpt: Translocations of bighorn sheep have had variable success due to the lack of good quality, predictive habitat models and of regular follow-up monitoring of translocated populations. This research helps to fill these voids. Radio telemetry was used to estimate the habitat use of a newly reintroduced population of California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) on the Jim Sage Range in Idaho. The habitat characteristics of locations used by groups of sheep were compared to those of randomly selected locations over two different geographic scales by use of GIS and logistic regression. The characteristics included vegetative composition, terrain ruggedness, distance to water sources, distance to steep slopes, slope, aspect, and elevation. Predictive habitat selection models based on winter, lambing, and summer habitat use were developed. The habitat models correctly classified 78-82% of used locations. Open grassy areas, distance to steep slopes and water, high elevation, and rugged terrain significantly contributed to the presence of sheep. The models suggested that there is an adequate amount of suitable habitat to support a viable population on the Jim Sage Range but that barriers may prevent their access to a portion of the range. Characteristics of the population, including births, deaths, movement patterns, and group composition and size were also monitored so that baseline data with which to compare future data to evaluate the status of the population would be provided. Adequate lambing and recruitment rates were observed. Twenty-two deaths occurred since the first translocation, and mountain lions were a major cause of these. Most of the mountain lion kills occurred during the first four months after the first release. Group size varied seasonally and was positively affected by population density.

Book excerpt: A herd of California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana), re-introduced to the area of Hell Creek on the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Nevada, was studied from 15 June 1978 to 20 August 1980. Major vegetation and physiographic types were delineated and described. Habitat preferences were determined from field observations of sheep use of both vegetation and physiographic habitat components. Sheep displayed preference in their use of habitat components during all seasons; greatest selection was shown by the ewe/ lamb band for physiographic types associated with escape cover in spring, and for vegetation types associated with quality forage in winter. Rams generally displayed less selective habitat use than did the ewe/lamb band. The population was relatively stable at 30-35 individuals, following the initial post-introduction period of rapid growth. It was hypothesized that high quality lambing terrain was limited in quantity within the present ewe/lamb range, and that expansion of the ewe/lamb range to include the nearby Boulder Spring and Virgin Canyon areas would promote substantial population increase. Water was available during all seasons. Spring use of mineral licks may have been related to seasonal mineral deficiency associated with tissue and/or milk production. Activity patterns suggested that sheep adapted their daily activities to fit local, seasonal situations.

Book excerpt: California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) were studied on Hart Mountain, Oregon, during the summer and fall of 1976, and the spring of 1977. The population consisted of a minimum of 196 sheep in June, 1977. The high number of lambs observed and high lamb:ewe ratios throughout both years of the study indicated that the population was expanding rapidly. Sheep occupied about 85 percent of the length of the mountain; ewe-lamb groups occupied 25 percent. Both ewes and rains occurred on two distinct ranges during all seasons, and interchange of individuals between the two ranges was minimal during the study. Most rutting activity occurred during November. Lambs were born between mid-April and late May. Fifteen habitats within the ewe-lamb range were identified and sampled for plant species composition. A habitat preference value (HPV) was calculated for each habitat on Hart Mountain, based on use by ewe groups. Bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum) and big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) were the two most widely distributed plant species in the ewe-lamb range; Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis) provided the greatest amount of herbaceous cover. Daily activities of ewe groups centered around four contiguous bedding grounds and three principal feeding areas. Topography, as well as vegetational composition, appeared to influence the preference of ewes for certain locations, particularly for major cliff formations and adjacent feeding\ areas. Habitat factors unique to the present ewe-lamb range are discussed as possible determinants of its location.

Book excerpt: I examined biodiversity management issues, implications and opportunities in a working industrial landscape of the San Bernardino Mountains, California, USA, where historic and active mining operations overlap habitat occupied by threatened, endangered or protected plant and animal tax. To elucidate patterns of habitat use by ungulates in a mini-influenced landscape, I evaluated resource selection by the Cushenbury population of desert bighorn sheep (Ovis Canadensis nelsoni). Modeling of a resource selection function (RSF) for that population identified proximity to active mine areas, water sources, and revegetation sites as important determinants of habitat selection. Next, I reviewed two collaborative dialogues between the public, private and civil sectors resulting in workable solutions achieving biodiversity conservation goals simultaneous with economic development: a habitat management strategy for threatened and endangered plants and a research collaborative focused on the long-term viability of an isolated bighorn sheep population. Finally, I integrated results of RSF modeling with principles adopted by those two initiatives into a conceptual framework to aid the development of an adaptive management plan for the Cushenbury bighorn sheep population. A formulation of conservation value is presented using results of RSF analysis and mitigation credits reflecting the degree to which degraded habitat is enhanced to benefit wild sheep. The proposed Bighorn Habitat Assessment Tool (BHAT) seeks to a) establish a habitat reserve providing maximum benefit to the unique requirements of bighorn sheep, b) incentivize voluntary actions by industry to ensure mining activities are compatible with bighorn sheep conservation, and c) allow for the objective evaluation of multiple mine planning and resource management alternatives.
