Book excerpt: This report collates and contextualizes available evidence on post-harvest losses (PHL) in horticultural crops in Kenya. We begin by outlining the extent of PHL in horticultural crops and its repercussions in the context of food security and poverty reduction. We then describe the growing importance of the horticulture sector in Kenya and its growth potential, especially in terms of exports. Following this discussion, we detail PHL for two important horticultural crops, mangoes and tomatoes, for which Kenya-specific evidence is available. We discuss ways to mitigate PHL from three angles: technological, economic or behavioral, and institutional. Documenting cost-effective technological interventions to mitigate PHL, we catalogue ways to tackle PHL at the individual farmer level. We then highlight behavioral bottlenecks to adoption of such technologies and the need to design interventions in ways that address these. Finally, we discuss structural and institutional changes that would need to accompany individual-level interventions to bring about significant reductions in PHL.

Book excerpt: The intelAgri project is aimed at introducing solutions to serious shortcomings in agribusiness in Ghana. To provide incentives in the development and enhancement of the bounties within our borders; incentives which have so far eluded the agricultural sector by reason of Post-Harvest Loss (PHL). Research has proven that about 50% of the total harvest, especially of perishable farm produce is loss even before getting to the consumer. Our solution entails applying expertise in the use of innovation in telecommunication to provide real time interface between farmers and buyers for the express purpose of reducing PHL. This will accommodate the obvious inadequacies in basic infrastructure like logistics, poor road networks, incoherent government policies among others, prevalent in the Sub Saharan Africa. This project also aims to spotlight solutions for utilization by government in shaping policies in the agricultural sector. It proposes to design and implement platforms that will bring farmers together on one hand and connect them to buyers on the other all in real time. Our proposed solutions are designed to overcome the obstacles posed by a preponderance of farmers with no or low formal education. The proposals adduced by this project will ride on the use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software featuring a website functionality to showcase an on-line marketplace. It will also include the creation of farmers' hub and the participation of the Local Telecommunication Companies (Telcos) employing the unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) solution. The proposals do not only aim at reducing Post Harvest Loss but to: 1. Improve the income of the farmer. 2. Provide incentives for investments in the agricultural sector. 3. Contribute to National Food and Nutritional Security. 4. Stimulate floundering economy. Agriculture contributes to 54 % of Ghana's GDP and accounts for over 40 % of export earnings, while at the same time providing over 90 % of the food needs of the country and,5. Contribute to universal human right which the current food insecurity has left unmet.

The United Nations has acknowledged the problem and approved the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. On 1st January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda officially came into force. These goals cover the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. The Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals comprehensively addresses the SDGs in an integrated way. It encompasses 17 volumes, each devoted to one of the 17 SDGs. This volume addresses SDG 2, namely "End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture" and contains the description of a range of related terms, to allow for a better understanding and foster knowledge. Our planet produces enough food to feed everyone. Malnutrition and hunger are the result of inappropriate food production processes, bad governance and injustice. SDG 2 seeks to guarantee quality and nutritious food to ensure healthy life by adopting a holistic approach that involves various actions targeting different actors, technologies, policies and programs. These initiatives have to face challenges coming from extensive environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity and the interrelated effects of climate change. Book excerpt: Global estimates show over half a billion people go hungry (FAO, 2020) and close to 2 billion people are either obese or overweight with another 2 billion of the world’s population suffering from micronutrient deficiencies (Micha et al., 2020, Fresco et al., 2017). Inarguably, the world faces significant malnutrition problem (including micro- and macro-nutrient deficiencies, obesity, and diet related non-communicable diseases). This is evident in a recent analysis pointing out that effort in achieving the Global Nutrition Targets is likely to be missed. The observed malnutrition threat is accompanied by climate change, which is influencing food production and consumption trends, and thereby leading to undernutrition and affecting overall development. In addition, there are growing incomes, accelerated urbanization, and expanding middle classes which are also causing significant changes in consumer behaviour and nutritional choices, necessitating both public and private expenditures for better food market integration. As a result, there is a pressing need to examine our food systems to guarantee food and nutrition security and to advance sustainable development. It is likely that the COVID-19 impact may further exacerbates the worsening food insecurity and nutritional status of the most vulnerable groups including women, children and adolescents, refugees and displaced people, smallholders in rural areas, and the urban poor.
