Book Synopsis Subalterns and Raj by : Crispin Bates
Download or read book Subalterns and Raj written by Crispin Bates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subalterns and Raj presents a unique introductory history of India with an account that begins before the period of British rule, and pursues the continuities within that history up to the present day. Its coverage ranges from Mughal India to post-independence Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, with a focus on the ‘ordinary’ people of India and South Asia. Subalterns and Raj examines overlooked issues in Indian social history and highlights controversies between historians. Taking an iconoclastic approach to the elites of South Asia since independence, it is critical of the colonial regime that went before them. This book is a stimulating and controversial read and, with a detailed guide to further reading and end-of-chapter bibliographies, it is an excellent guide for all students of the Indian subcontinent.

His insight visions of selfless sacrificed pushes me to go on. lt is distressful to celebrate when he is no more to rejoice along. This book is dedicated to His Memorial. I am deeply grateful to my beloved mother Lalengmawii Colney for her love, encouragement, and prayers all through the work. The study would not to its present form without her constant moral support and suggestions. Last, but not by any means least, I thank to Almighty God for giving me good health and strength, time and financial blessing to finish this manuscript. The views expressed in the book are entirely of the author and the others are duly cited in the text. Needless to say, that the omissions in the study are either of ignorance or of negligence and the mistake, the sole responsibility lies with the scholar.
Book Synopsis Ethnic Mobilisation and Violence in Northeast India by : Pahi Saikia
Download or read book Ethnic Mobilisation and Violence in Northeast India written by Pahi Saikia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a very detailed work on the relationship between movements for autonomy by indigenous peoples (the so-called ‘tribes’) and violence in Assam, in northeast India. The book addresses some of the reasons for the failure of ethnic conflict management and for the frequent emergence of violence in the region. In particular, the historical description of movements by the Dimasas, Misings and Bodos is well compiled and provides a good summary for the readers. At the same time, the work offers a good understanding of ethnic violence in contemporary India. The volume offers some new research data based on comparative analysis of different trajectories followed by three important movements among Assam’s ethnic minorities. While the pieces of the argument are based on the existing literature on ethnic violence and contentious politics, they are effectively connected to materials drawn from northeast India. Furthermore, the book raises significant concerns on the debates on crafting of decentralised institutions and executive opportunities that may facilitate ethnic accommodation thereby reducing the likelihood of such groups to pursue their goals through channels that are radical or extreme.

Book Synopsis Accumulation in Post-Colonial Capitalism by : Iman Kumar Mitra
Download or read book Accumulation in Post-Colonial Capitalism written by Iman Kumar Mitra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume looks at how accumulation in postcolonial capitalism blurs the boundaries of space, institutions, forms, financial regimes, labour processes, and economic segments on one hand, and creates zones and corridors on the other. It draws our attention to the peculiar but structurally necessary coexistence of both primitive and virtual modes of accumulation in the postcolony. From these two major inquiries it develops a new understanding of postcolonial capitalism. The case studies in this volume discuss the production of urban spaces of capital extraction, institutionalization of postcolonial finance capital, gendering of work forms, establishment of new forms of labour, formation of and changes in caste and racial identities and networks, and securitization—and thereby confirm that no study of contemporary capitalism is complete without thoroughly addressing the postcolonial condition. By challenging the established dualities between citizenship-based civil society and welfare-based political society, exploring critically the question of colonial and postcolonial difference, and foregrounding the material processes of accumulation against the culturalism of postcolonial studies, this volume redefines postcolonial studies in South Asia and beyond. It is invaluable reading for students and scholars of South Asian studies, sociology, cultural and critical anthropology, critical and praxis studies, and political science.

Book Synopsis Communalism in Postcolonial India by : Mujibur Rehman
Download or read book Communalism in Postcolonial India written by Mujibur Rehman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconceptualises the idea of communalism in independent India. It locates the changing contours of politics and religion in the country from the colonial times to the present day, and makes an important intervention in understanding the relationship between communalism and communal violence. It evaluates the role of state, media, civil societies, political parties, and other actors in the process as well as ideas such as secularism, nationalism, minority rights and democracy. Using new conceptual tools and an interdisciplinary approach, the work challenges the conventional understanding of communalism as time and context independent. This second edition includes a Foreword by Romila Thapar and an Afterword by Dipesh Chakrabarty, along with a new Introduction which revaluate the trajectory of communal politics in contemporary India, and question how secularism has come to be understood today. This topical volume will be useful to scholars and researchers in South Asian politics, political science, history, sociology and social anthropology, as well as the interested general reader.
