Book excerpt: Having survived the Oregon Trail, Emma Palmer is ready for a fresh start, even if it costs her all the gold in California. Emma Palmer has had many jobs and has gone by even more names, but most recently she is known as Seline, madam of her own establishment. Her place is clean, her booze is cheap and her bedrooms are fancy. But when a would-be patron won’t take no for an answer, she is forced to don a new disguise and flee for her life. While the schemes she cooks up might seem outrageous to an outsider, they haven’t failed her yet. Tom Slater is a taciturn cattleman at the tail end of a long, hard season on the trail. He’s looking forward to a quiet winter at his old family homestead in Mexico. What he doesn’t plan on is escorting a group of women on the run to safety south of the border. Tom doesn’t need to be a trailsman to know that the woman with the sly, green eyes—the one he can’t keep out of his thoughts—will only lead to trouble.

Book Synopsis At-Risk Students by : Robert Donmoyer
Download or read book At-Risk Students written by Robert Donmoyer and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the circumstances of at-risk students and argues that well-intentioned policymakers and educators run the risk of making matters worse rather than better for these students, even if their actions are based on the best social science evidence available. The book demonstrates the diverse, idiosyncratic nature of these students, argues that traditional social science methods cannot capture this idiosyncrasy and diversity, and presents research methods, policies, and programs that can accommodate student diversity.

Download or read book Illywhacker written by Peter Carey and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 1001 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australian slang, an illywhacker is a country fair con man, an unprincipled seller of fake diamonds and dubious tonics. And Herbert Badgery, the 139-year-old narrator of Peter Carey's uproarious novel, may be the king of them all. Vagabond and charlatan, aviator and car salesman, seducer and patriarch, Badgery is a walking embodiment of the Australian national character—espcially of its proclivity for tall stories and barefaced lies. As Carey follows this charming scoundrel across a continent and a century, he creates a crazy quilt of outlandish encounters, with characters that include a genteel dowager who fends off madness with an electric belt and a ravishing young girl with a dangerous fondness for rooftop trysts. Boldly inventive, irresistibly odd, Illywhacker is further proof that Peter Carey is one of the most enchanting writers at work in any hemisphere.

Download or read book Halls of Honor written by Robert F. Pace and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful confluence of youthful energies and entrenched codes of honor enlivens Robert F. Pace's look at the world of male student college life in the antebellum South. Through extensive research into records, letters, and diaries of students and faculty from more than twenty institutions, Pace creates a vivid portrait of adolescent rebelliousness struggling with the ethic to cultivate a public face of industry, respect, and honesty. These future leaders confronted authority figures, made friends, studied, courted, frolicked, drank, gambled, cheated, and dueled -- all within the established traditions of their southern culture. For the sons of southern gentry, college life presented a variety of challenges, including engaging with northern professors and adjusting to living away from home and family. The young men extended the usual view of higher education as a bridge between childhood and adulthood, innovatively creating their own world of honor that prepared them for living in the larger southern society. Failure to obtain a good education was a grievous breach of honor for them, and Pace skillfully weaves together stories of student antics, trials, and triumphs within the broader male ethos of the Old South. When the Civil War erupted, many students left campus to become soldiers, defend their families, and preserve a way of life. By war's end, the code of honor had waned, changing the culture of southern colleges and universities forever. Halls of Honor represents a significant update of E. Merton Coulter's 1928 classic work, College Life in the Old South, which focused on the University of Georgia. Pace's lively study will widen the discussion of antebellum southern college life for decades to come.

Department of Education and published by National Association of College & University Business Office. This book was released on 1981 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium of four mini-projects carried out by a special task force of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) addresses policy and management issues related to providing accessibility to handicapped students in higher education. Topics range from executive policy decisions on compliance with federal accessibility mandates to operational procedures for responding to specific accommodation requests. The compendium is comprised of four sections: Section 1 was developed from a series of site-visit interviews with senior-level decision makers, faculty, staff and handicapped students at six colleges and universities. It contains an overview of accessibility issues and problems that require attention, a discussion of how accessibility considerations can be incorporated into a planning and budgeting process, and a set of guidelines for assessing specific accommodation requests; Section 2 reviews 16 national data bases that describe the handicapped population in the United States and contains summary charts of the characteristics revealed. Section 3 describes the results of a survey that NACUBO mailed to a stratified sample of 944 of its member institutions concerning trends in accessibility expenditures and number and types of handicapped students served; and Section 4 lists adaptive education equipment by impairment (such as hearing or mobility) and then by function (such as writing or speaking). The document contains an index, equipment source list, and lists of information resources and services available to handicapped students. (GLR)
