Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Possibility of the Development of High Speed Train between Hong Kong and Mainland China" Submitted by Wong Wing Sum Angela for the Degree of Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning at The University of Hong Kong in June 2005 Cross boundary passenger and freight traffic is forecast to increase significantly in the years ahead as Hong Kong's economy becomes even more closely interconnected with that of the Mainland, particularly the adjoining Guangdong Province. According to the Railway Development Strategy 2000 (RDS-2), the Regional Express Line (REL) was recommended and mapped out as one of the preferred railway network expansion plan. The REL is an express rail service which will link the urban area with the Boundary. In this thesis, the possibility of the development of high speed train between Hong Kong and Mainland China is discussed. It only focuses on the development and the possible routing on the Hong Kong side. A detailed discussion of the reasons that prompt the Hong Kong Government to look into the feasibility of development a High Speed Cross-boundary Railway System. I realize that there are lots of factors that favor the undertaking of this project, however, in the thesis, I only focus on a number of selected reasons that I feel are the most significant. To support my stand for the developing the railway, I have done a study of the boundary traffic growth pattern of Hong Kong in the past 10 years and the forecast of future passenger flows between the boundaries. The study of growth pattern indicates that there is a real demand for a railway line. Furthermore, I would give quotations and other supporting evidence that this railway project is very in line with the government policy and the economic development of the region. After we have identified the aspects that support the development of a railway network, our next step will be to decide on the most appropriate route for the railway network. Comparisons of the two routings were made based on the different criteria such as accessibility, development potential, engineering, level of service, planning environment etc. I would like to conclude that as long as we are within budget, the difference in engineering technique required in the project would not be too much a problem. Environmental impact would also be minimized through proper supervision by the authority. After dismissing these two criteria, the "development potential," which I feel is the most influential. This is one aspect that can dictate facets like accessibility, total rail ridership and value for money. However, if other criteria are to be considered as well, the outcome maybe different, for example, Mainland China development plan, Hong Kong government policy like the selection of spatial development pattern for future development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, China has built 25,000 km of dedicated highspeed railway—more than the rest of the world combined. What can we learn from this remarkable experience? China’s High-Speed Rail Development examines the Chinese experience to draw lessons for countries considering investing in high-speed rail. The report scrutinizes the planning and delivery mechanisms that enabled the rapid construction of the high-speed rail system. It highlights the role of long-term planning, consistent plan execution, and a joint venture structure that ensures active participation of provincial and local governments in project planning and financing. Traffic on China’s high-speed trains has grown to 1.7 billion passengers a year. The study examines the characteristics of the markets for which high-speed rail is competitive in China. It discusses the pricing and service design considerations that go into making high-speed rail services competitive with other modes and factors such as good urban connectivity that make the service attractive to customers. One of the most remarkable aspects of the Chinese experience is the rapid pace of high-quality construction. The report looks at the role of strong capacity development within and cooperation among China Railway Corporation, rail manufacturers, universities, research institutions, laboratories, and engineering centers that allowed for rapid technological advancement and localization of technology. It describes the project delivery structures and incentives for delivering quality and timely results. Finally, the report analyzes the financial and economic sustainability of the investment in high-speed rail. It finds that a developing country can price high-speed rail services affordably and still achieve financial viability, but this requires very high passenger density. Economic viability similarly depends on high passenger density.

The book begins by looking at the background of China and the history and growth of railway development in China through five key phases, followed by assessing the cultural changes in the railway carriage and exploring how these are linked to social equality and national provisions. The core of this book aims to analyse the Chinese urban transformation through the development of the high-speed rail (HSR) infrastructure in China. Eleven important new HSR stations in mainland China, plus the new Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, have been selected to contextually explore how HSR infrastructures have affected the development of the Chinese urban context. The selected case studies are the stations of Beijing South, Wuhan, Shanghai Hongqiao, Guangzhou South, Xi’an North, Nanjing South, Chengdu East, Tianjin West, Zhengzhou East, Hangzhou East and Hong Kong West Kowloon. All of these were built between 2008 and 2018. In these case studies, the location and the intentions and success of promoting urban development are analysed and assessed. Following this, the book further investigates the peculiarities of the new HSR stations in China in comparison with stations in Europe. An assessment framework is established to evaluate the Chinese case studies comparatively with significant cases in Europe, attending to the urban structure of the area, the architectural quality, the functional diversity and the quality of the public space generated in the surrounding area.

Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the dramatic architecture and design for the largest rail transportation hub in the world, serving a high-speed rail network that connects Hong Kong to major cities in China, with its pioneering, ecofriendly, and socially sound design. The is the first book to document the highly innovative Terminal in Hong Kong, completed in 2018, with a rare glimpse at all stages of plans, design, and construction. Located centrally in Hong Kong, this is the largest below ground station in the world. The high-speed rail terminus station will connect Hong Kong to Beijing with the largest rail network in history, expected to strengthen the city's strategic position as the southern gateway of China. West Kowloon Station enjoys a spectacular location with a panoramic view of the Hong Kong skyline, but when Bromberg's team entered the competition to design it, they encountered a problem the station is mostly 100 feet belowground. His solution was to ensure the station was civic-minded and to create a large volume capped by a shell-like dome that rises from the earth, capturing daylight and sending it deep underground. Even as they stand on the subterranean concourse, passengers can catch a glimpse of Victoria Peak and the city's tallest buildings. In order to keep the space open and airy, Bromberg minimized the number of columns needed to support the vast atrium. His team devised a system that branches out, giving the organic appearance that complements the sweep of the station roof. This book contains never-before-seen sketches, models, renderings, drawings, and all-new photography of the building as well as an interview with the architect.

Book excerpt: This expanded and revised fifth edition of The Geography of Transport Systems provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field with a broad overview of its concepts, methods and areas of application. Aimed mainly at an undergraduate audience, it provides an overview of the spatial aspects of transportation and focuses on how the mobility of passengers and freight is linked with geography. The book is divided into ten chapters, each covering a specific conceptual dimension, including networks, modes, terminals, freight transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts, and updated with the latest information available. The fifth edition offer new and updated material on information technologies and mobility, e-commerce, transport and the economy, mobility and society, supply chains, security, pandemics, energy and the environment and climate change. With over 140 updated figures and maps, The Geography of Transport Systems presents transportation systems at different scales ranging from global to local. This volume is an essential resource for undergraduates studying transport geography, as well as those interested in economic and urban geography, transport planning and engineering. A companion web site, which contains additional material such as photographs, maps, figures and PowerPoint presentations, has been developed for the book and can be found here: https://transportgeography.org/
