Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycrystalline copper was followed in both cyclic softening and hardening with positron lifetime and x-ray particle size measurements. As initially hard copper is fatigue cycled, the mean positron lifetime decreases while the x-ray particle size increases. Similar correlation exists during fatigue hardening of initially soft copper, i.e., the mean positron lifetime increases while the x-ray particle size decreases. The trends indicate a positron response to decreasing dislocation density during fatigue softening and the converse during fatigue hardening. Hydrogen embrittlement effects in AISI 4340 steel and nickel were followed with mean positron lifetime. It appears that the effects are caused by mutual interaction of dislocations, protons, and positrons. In single crystal copper irradiated at 80/sup 0/K with 4.5-MeV electrons, about 8 percent of the defects produced appear to be divacancies and the balance simple Frenkel defects. Stage III annealing data suggest that both mono and divacancies are removed and that a stable multivacancy unit exists at temperatures above the stage III region. These entities could serve as nucleation centers for voids.

The former are generally older, classical methods where the sample as a whole is studied and various local prop erties are deduced by differentiation. The microscopic methods, on the other hand, have been discovered and developed more recently, and they operate for the most part on an atomistic scale. Glancing through the shelves of books on the various scientific fields, and, in particular, on the field of physical metallurgy, we are surprised at how lit tle consideration has been given to the microscopic methods. How these tools provide new insight and information is a question which so far has not at tracted much attention. Similar observations can be made at scientific confer ences, where the presentation of papers involving microscopic methods is often pushed into a far corner. The aim of this book is to bridge the present gap and encourage more interaction between the various fields of study and selected microscopic meth ods, with special emphasis on their suitability for investigating metals.
