Book excerpt: Positive Polynomials in Control originates from an invited session presented at the IEEE CDC 2003 and gives a comprehensive overview of existing results in this quickly emerging area. This carefully edited book collects important contributions from several fields of control, optimization, and mathematics, in order to show different views and approaches of polynomial positivity. The book is organized in three parts, reflecting the current trends in the area: 1. applications of positive polynomials and LMI optimization to solve various control problems, 2. a mathematical overview of different algebraic techniques used to cope with polynomial positivity, 3. numerical aspects of positivity of polynomials, and recently developed software tools which can be employed to solve the problems discussed in the book.

Book excerpt: This book gathers the main recent results on positive trigonometric polynomials within a unitary framework. The book has two parts: theory and applications. The theory of sum-of-squares trigonometric polynomials is presented unitarily based on the concept of Gram matrix (extended to Gram pair or Gram set). The applications part is organized as a collection of related problems that use systematically the theoretical results.

Researchers in non-commutative algebraic geometry, control theory, system engineering, optimization, quantum physics and information science will find the unified notation and mixture of algebraic geometry and mathematical programming useful. Theoretical results are matched with algorithmic considerations; several examples and information on how to use NCSOStools open source package to obtain the results provided. Results are presented on detecting the eigenvalue and trace positivity of polynomials in non-commuting variables using Newton chip method and Newton cyclic chip method, relaxations for constrained and unconstrained optimization problems, semidefinite programming formulations of the relaxations and finite convergence of the hierarchies of these relaxations, and the practical efficiency of algorithms.

Nevertheless, the existing books in the field are compilations of articles without interconnection or logical structure or they express the personal point of view of the author. This book compiles the developments of researchers with demonstrated experience in the field of fuzzy control following a logic structure and a unified the style. The first chapters of the book are dedicated to the introduction of the main fuzzy logic techniques, where the following chapters focus on concrete applications. This book is supported by the EUSFLAT and CEA-IFAC societies, which include a large number of researchers in the field of fuzzy logic and control. The central topic of the book, Fuzzy Control, is one of the main research and development lines covered by these associations.

This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emanating from the theory of C*-algebras and actions of tori theoren, the problems discussed here are outgrowths of random walk problems on lattices. An AGL (d,Z)-invariant (which is a partially ordered commutative algebra) is obtained for lattice polytopes (compact convex polytopes in Euclidean space whose vertices lie in Zd), and certain algebraic properties of the algebra are related to geometric properties of the polytope. There are also strong connections with convex analysis, Choquet theory, and reflection groups. This book serves as both an introduction to and a research monograph on the many interconnections between these topics, that arise out of questions of the following type: Let f be a (Laurent) polynomial in several real variables, and let P be a (Laurent) polynomial with only positive coefficients; decide under what circumstances there exists an integer n such that Pnf itself also has only positive coefficients. It is intended to reach and be of interest to a general mathematical audience as well as specialists in the areas mentioned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the main achievements of the EC funded 6th Framework Program project COFCLUO – Clearance of Flight Control Laws Using Optimization. This project successfully contributed to the achievement of a top-level objective to meet society’s needs for a more efficient, safer and environmentally friendly air transport by providing new techniques and tools for the clearance of flight control laws. This is an important part of the certification and qualification process of an aircraft – a costly and time-consuming process for the aeronautical industry. The overall objective of the COFCLUO project was to develop and apply optimization techniques to the clearance of flight control laws in order to improve efficiency and reliability. In the book, the new techniques are explained and benchmarked against traditional techniques currently used by the industry. The new techniques build on mathematical criteria derived from the certification and qualification requirements together with suitable models of the aircraft. The development of these criteria and models are also presented in the book. Because of wider applicability, the optimization-based clearance of flight control laws will open up the possibility to design innovative aircraft that today are out of the scope using classical clearance tools. Optimization-based clearance will not only increase safety but it will also simplify the whole certification and qualification process, thus significantly reduce cost. The achieved speedup will also support rapid modeling and prototyping and reduce “time to market”.

Book excerpt: This book aims at gathering roboticists, control theorists, neuroscientists, and mathematicians, in order to promote a multidisciplinary research on movement analysis. It follows the workshop “ Geometric and Numerical Foundations of Movements ” held at LAAS-CNRS in Toulouse in November 2015[1]. Its objective is to lay the foundations for a mutual understanding that is essential for synergetic development in motion research. In particular, the book promotes applications to robotics --and control in general-- of new optimization techniques based on recent results from real algebraic geometry.

Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive introduction to the powerful moment approach for solving global optimization problems (and some related problems) described by polynomials (and even semi-algebraic functions). In particular, the author explains how to use relatively recent results from real algebraic geometry to provide a systematic numerical scheme for computing the optimal value and global minimizers. Indeed, among other things, powerful positivity certificates from real algebraic geometry allow one to define an appropriate hierarchy of semidefinite (SOS) relaxations or LP relaxations whose optimal values converge to the global minimum. Several extensions to related optimization problems are also described. Graduate students, engineers and researchers entering the field can use this book to understand, experiment with and master this new approach through the simple worked examples provided.

Book excerpt: This volume is based on lectures delivered at the 2019 AMS Short Course “Sum of Squares: Theory and Applications”, held January 14–15, 2019, in Baltimore, Maryland. This book provides a concise state-of-the-art overview of the theory and applications of polynomials that are sums of squares. This is an exciting and timely topic, with rich connections to many areas of mathematics, including polynomial and semidefinite optimization, real and convex algebraic geometry, and theoretical computer science. The six chapters introduce and survey recent developments in this area; specific topics include the algebraic and geometric aspects of sums of squares and spectrahedra, lifted representations of convex sets, and the algorithmic and computational implications of viewing sums of squares as a meta algorithm. The book also showcases practical applications of the techniques across a variety of areas, including control theory, statistics, finance and machine learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a modern perspective on the modelling, analysis, and synthesis ideas behind convex-optimisation-based control of nonlinear systems: it embeds them in models with convex structures. Analysis and Synthesis of Nonlinear Control Systems begins with an introduction to the topic and a discussion of the problems to be solved. It then explores modelling via convex structures, including quasi-linear parameter-varying, Takagi–Sugeno models, and linear fractional transformation structures. The authors cover stability analysis, addressing Lyapunov functions and the stability of polynomial models, as well as the performance and robustness of the models. With detailed examples, simulations, and programming code, this book will be useful to instructors, researchers, and graduate students interested in nonlinear control systems.
