Book excerpt: In September 1756, with only fire buckets, two hand tubs, and citizen volunteers safeguarding the Colonial seaport, Portsmouth decided to organize and regulate its fire protection. By 1852, the Portsmouth Fire Department boasted six suction engines and in 1864 entered the age of steam power when the first steam fire engine was delivered. Disastrous fires and a growing city required the department to modernize as it moved into the 20th century. The departments first motorized engine was purchased in 1912, and by 1921, there was a new central fire station along with a new gasoline-powered ladder truck. Through an exceptional collection of photographs, Portsmouth Firefighting richly illustrates the story and tradition of a fire department forever connected to its brave firefighters, their magnificent fire engines, and the spectacular blazes they fought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1895 until 1969, the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, fielded a professional minor league team. Fans flocked to see the Truckers, Cubs, Merrimacs, and Tides as they battled opponents on the dirt and grass of local diamonds. Many locals are surprised to discover that such renowned ballplayers as Pie Traynor, Hack Wilson, Eddie Stanky, and Harry "The Cat" Breechen got their start in Portsmouth. In 1933, Negro League legend Buck Leonard first played for the Portsmouth Revels and later returned to briefly star with the 1953 Merrimacs, his only opportunity to play integrated ball during his storied career. A number of former big-name players guided the team from the bench including Tony Lazzeri, Jimmie Foxx, and Pepper Martin to name a few. The images in this pictorial volume showcase only a fragment of the vast chronology of baseball as it was played in Portsmouth over the years. Yet their visual appeal and historical representation of the game allow the reader to experience and recall what it was once like to have the National Pastime as an integral part of the city.

Book excerpt: Few people think of a rich Black heritage when they think of New England. In the pioneering book Black Portsmouth, Mark J. Sammons and Valerie Cunningham celebrate it, guiding the reader through more than three centuries of New England and Portsmouth social, political, economic, and cultural history as well as scores of personal and site-specific stories. Here, we meet such Africans as the "likely negro boys and girls from Gambia," who debarked at Portsmouth from a slave ship in 1758, and Prince Whipple, who fought in the American Revolution. We learn about their descendants, including the performer Richard Potter and John Tate of the People’s Baptist Church, who overcame the tragedies and challenges of their ancestors’ enslavement and subsequent marginalization to build communities and families, found institutions, and contribute to their city, region, state, and nation in many capacities. Individual entries speak to broader issues—the anti-slavery movement, American religion, and foodways, for example. We also learn about the extant historical sites important to Black Portsmouth—including the surprise revelation of an African burial ground in October 2003—as well as the extraordinary efforts being made to preserve remnants of the city’s early Black heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore Roosevelt's interest in foreign affairs was no less intense than his zeal for domestic reform, as Eugene P. Trani demonstrates in this new study of the Portsmouth Conference which in 1906 brought an end to the Russo-Japanese war. Conscious of America's growing stature as a world power and concerned lest continued hostilities disrupt further the political and economic composition of East Asia, Roosevelt proclaimed himself peacemaker. With characteristic energy -- and with considerable tact -- he initiated the conference and successfully brought about a treaty. It was no easy task. Trani, who has made extensive use of Russian, Japanese, and American archival material, shows that the Tsarist government, mortified by Russian defeats, wished to renew the conflict. This last of the personally managed peace conferences greatly enhanced the prestige of both the United States and its ebullient chief executive.

Book excerpt: In 1752, the General Assembly of Virginia passed an act approving Col. William Crawford's survey for a town, which he would name Portsmouth after his hometown in England. Crawford envisioned a port that would be known for its commerce and naval capabilities. Today Portsmouth is home to the nation's oldest naval shipyard and naval hospital. The roots of the U.S. Coast Guard were established here when the nation's first lightship was placed offshore at Craney Island in 1820. "Olde Towne" and other residential sections of the city remain mostly intact, with picturesque dwellings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Strolling around the downtown district, one can still admire the many churches, theaters, and commercial structures that have been a part of Portsmouth's history and culture.

Book excerpt: An international design research programme, the Portsmouth Elephant Cage (2016-17) is summarised in this report. The Elephant Cage evaluated, explored and critiqued significant issues with the current proposals for sea defences along Portsmouth's Southsea frontage. An alternative strategy for the sea defences that can further enhance the value, amenity, environment and ecology of Southsea common, whilst delivering a more sustainable future for the city of Portsmouth, is then described and illustrated. The report recommends actions forward to address the apparent shortfalls with the existing proposals in the light of the findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For children in Portsmouth, the 1950s was an exciting time. With the war over and a renewed enthusiasm in the air, life was good. There was a range of entertainment – as well as day trips and holidays to the beach, families could relax in front of the television, enjoy their favourite stars on the big screen and dance along to the radio. For Valerie Reilly, the '50s was a time of celebration of national, local and personal events, which she recalls in absorbing detail here. If you remember the docks, trips to Southsea and exploring bombed-out buildings, then you'll enjoy this charming look back at an exciting era.
