Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in 1984 that I visited the Kanha forest with a group of friends. It was love at first sight in my case, and what started off as a casual visit soon turned into a lifelong affair. As the years passed by, I explored many other jungles too. Every new place came with a new set of friends. Along with them, my acquaintance with the animals and their habitat began growing. During the initial phase, I did my photography with a video camera, but around 1996, I came across the book Sunlight and Shadows by M. Y. Ghorpade. Literally overnight I switched over to a still camera. Although I met him much later in my life, I made him my guru there and then. His photograph Tusker in the Rain, taken when photography was a difficult pursuit, still captivates me. Even in this age, I find it difficult enough doing wildlife photography using digital equipment. I can only imagine the hard work that he must have put in with his medium-format camera using black-and-white film.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first ever monumental and scientific documentation of the faunal wealth of the Indian Desert state of Rajasthan. This volume, the second of two, provides a comprehensive picture of the conservation efforts undertaken to prevent further degradation of the condition of Rajasthan’s faunal wealth. A scholarly contribution to the field of knowledge, it provides novel and vital information on wildlife preservation initiatives in India’s largest state. Broadly falling under the Indo-Malaya Ecozone, the three major biomes of Rajasthan include deserts and xeric shrublands, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests. The corresponding ecoregions to the above biomes are, respectively, the Thar Desert and northwestern thorn scrub forests, the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forests, and the Upper Gangetic Plains moist deciduous forests. Contrary to popular belief, the well-known Thar or Great Indian Desert occupies only a part of the state. Rajasthan is diagonally divided by the Aravalli mountain ranges into arid and semi-arid regions. The latter have a spectacular variety of highly diversified and unique yet fragile ecosystems comprising lush green fields, marshes, grasslands, rocky patches and hilly terrains, dense forests, the southern plateau, fresh water wetlands, and salt lakes. Apart from the floral richness, there is faunal abundance from fishes to mammals. In this volume, the various flagship and threatened species are described in the 20 chapters penned by top notch wildlife experts and academics. The world famous heronry, tiger reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and some threat-ridden biodiversity-rich areas shall certainly draw the attention of readers from around the world.

Book excerpt: Wild India takes you on a journey to discover the wildlife wonders of the Indian subcontinent in all their splendour and beauty. India's enormous landmass plays host to a huge diversity of wildlife and its geography ranges from the southernmost tip at the beaches of Tamil Nadu, to the northern snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas, and from Thar desert in the west to the rainforests in the northeast on the border to Myanmar. This variety of habitats has led to an extremely diverse flora and fauna, which is documented in this beautiful photographic book. India has one of the highest human populations on earth, though despite such populations density, its enormous landmass plays host to a huge diversity of wildlife. Of the worlds 37 known species of wild cats, 14 are found in India more than in any other country. There are about 350 species of mammals, 540 species of reptiles and 1200 species of birds breeding in India. The geography of the Indian subcontinent ranges from the southern most tip at the beaches of Tamil Nadu, to the northern snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas. AUTHOR: Axel Gomille worked as a biologist and field guide in the central Indian tiger reserves of Kanha and Bandhavgarh before going on to a career as a TV editor. His award-winning photographs have been exhibited worldwide.

Book excerpt: Saving Wild India spells out new and innovative ways to govern our wilderness and safeguard its future. In his new book, naturalist and conservationist Valmik Thapar gives us a bold yet considered plan to preserve and protect our dwindling forests, wildlife and wilderness areas. Saving wild India (whether we realize it or not) is of critical importance to the quality of life we lead today. It should therefore be a priority, both at the level of the state and that of the individual, to sort out the myriad problems that are leading to the destruction of our forests and the extermination of our wildlife - poaching, timber smuggling, illegal mining, flawed administrative policy and much much more. Drawing upon more than forty years of experience in the field, the author gives us a detailed blueprint on how to effect change and revitalize and expand our forest cover. He argues for the repeal of archaic and ineffectual laws, the framing and passing of enlightened legislation, the revamping of our training institutes, the eradication of corruption, putting an end to the meddling of politicians and bureaucrats, the reorganization of the Indian Forest Service, enlightened wildlife tourism, an inclusive approach to conservation, public-private partnerships, as well as a variety of other measures that could check the ongoing damage to wild India.
